Makes me feel like I’ve never actually heard Debussy before. Genius.
I think that every time I hear a her play Debussy. Her understanding of the music and how to share it is inspiring. Her playing of Debussy has brought me to tears more than once. Our world is truly blessed to have a musician of her talent as part of it.
Yes❤
Such a way of laying her hands to the keys, firmly or softly, never throwing them, gracefully presenting them and allowing them to pass the music from her through the instrument...
I totally agree. Her playing makes my spirit soar, simply because of her relationship with the piano and it with her.
Well said well said
Perfect harmony
Yes, I can't stand superfluous hand movements. Glenn Gould would be an exception, he's really expressing himself when he uses his hands in a conductor fashion.
This is the best pianist I've heard so far. Amazing touch on the keys, wonderful interpretation, perfect tempo, perfect pedaling, just gorgeous. She made this piece sound flowing and there was not a single point where music has stopped until the end...this is the top level of music.
These performances posted in this youtube playlist are the first I’m hearing of Ms. Pires. She’s wonderful. Her touch, phrasing, dynamics, sensibility - everything - so beautifully played. I love the way she plays Debussey. I am on a mission now to find her other work. Thanks for posting.
One of the best renditions of Arabesque No 1 I've heard of
HOLY-SMOKE, WHAT AN AMAZING PERFORMANCE. ❤
A waterfall of notes played with unrivaled tenderness and passion...
It’s so strange to think that this was written in 1888 and we have had to wait all that time until someone was finally capable of fully realising the composer’s intention. The forward direction of all those longer-note lines is exquisite.
Classical music describes Life. Imagine leaves sailing in the wind or birds. Water is a major subject in a lot of classical music. Not in words, but through sound.
Some people say that people play it too fast, but this one is not that fast and is not slow, and, it has lots of emotion😊❤.
Gracias Maga
Among all the videos on RUclips of this piece, this is the best rendition I can find
Perfection
This is what is possible when the artist knows their place, when the point is allowed to come alive because of but not for the artist. Brava, Maria. Exquisite
I can guarantee there is not a single soul here in icy Scandinavia that plays Debussy with such elegance and warmth !
Exquisite sound, performance and lady.
😂
No piece better suits not just the technical style but the core expressivity of Mme Pires than this one. It's totally HER, and she plays the sox off it.
Incredible, moving rendition, every single note felt classical at its best
The interpretation by the enormous Maria João Pires is absolutely extraordinary! Each note is thought out and each phrase has its own meaning, in a captivating fluency. Brilliant, moving and incredible the stratospheric level that our pianist has reached. Sublime, unpretentious, extreme musicality. Thanks for the publication.
i have some earlier recordings of hers...i feel as if she has gotten even better with age. sublime..
So beautiful ❤
She is adorable !
Beautiful ebb and flow like water lapping softly against the banks of the Seine River.
This is by far the best version of this tune that I've ever heard. Absolutely fantastic, stunning, an incredible performance
Beautiful in every way. Thank you.
Beautiful. She has such a delicate, yet expressive touch, that I still like it at this speed. Sigh. Someday...
Loved every bit of it.
¡Qué elegancia, qué refinamiento, qué artista, qué mujer!
Sensitive, subtle, such understanding of the phrasing, absolutely delightful!
marvellous ... uplifting ...
Exquisite!
Full of charm
I never heard a bad interpretation from her. Absolutely queen of her art
This is the best performance of this piece I’ve ever heard❤❤❤❤
Pires is ascendant in the stars but so grounded and earthy. Her Mozart and here her Debussy so light, ethereal.
❤
Magnífica interpretación!.
The tempo starts out and generally stays faster than the version I've most frequently listened to, but, it still works wonderfully. It's really interesting, too, how the same notes come out feeling differently with the harmonies standing out in new and exciting ways.
Lovely and gracefully played. So effordless and pure. Also liked the tempo. She got a new fan of me.
Makes me feel I`ve never heard it before, I loe it in the morning
Wow! Just, wow!
I love this lady.
One of the most beautiful and sublime performances I have ever heard. The music flows like the Sien river, powerful and yet so peaceful.
How ABSOLUTELY beautiful ! So peaceful and quieting ! The perfect mixture of peace and soul ! Thank you to this lady !!❤
merveilleuse interprétation , dommage pour le bruit derrère
Still coming back every month to inspire my phrasing. Forever wow
seems it has been written with her in mind
Phenomenal interpretation but what the hell is all that noise in the background?!
I think it's some kind of door, repeatedly closing. But I tell you one thing, she truly is a world-class performer by th way she totally ignores those incessant rackets. Also, too, she has obviously captured th hearts of everyone with this performance as yours was th only comment about th noise I could find! I was looking for it from someone as I was going to comment on noise, myself.
Maravillosa interpretación!!!!!❤😊
BRAVO🩵💜Thank you so much for your beautiful, heartwarming and holy music😭 I am really happy to take your lesson of this piece🙏
Que expressividade maravilhosa.
So very lovely! ❤
Tears of Joy! Perfection!
Great interpretation, really enjoyed the pacing and tone.
Absolutely gorgeous

SO beautiful !! Cheers !!❤
Só agradecer. Poder ouvir. E poder ouvir essa maravilhosa apresentação. Grato.
Very great performance! Bravo!! Sounds amazing!
Muita técnica sobre a qual flutua a sensibilidade e o talento.
holy cow. I've never noticed those subtle pauses and how they clarify the notes. I know practically nothing about music but this stuff from Ms. P. is great.
Mellow waves from bonnie scotland tomlta does the planets its lovely 😊😊😊
Stunning !❤
Beautiful expressive and fluid. I love it 😊
Sublime, despretensiosa, musicalidade extrema. Obrigado pela publicação.

Art offers a way out, or perhaps a way in.
Yes, yes, yes!
Magnifique le piano on est vraiment ailleurs...
I’ve tried to compare Lucy’s rendition of this piece to that of many other artists, but I have yet to find someone who plays this better then Lucy.
Who is Lucy ?
Amongst the beautiful and well versed comments here, I, in my funny way of doing things, would have to allow my OCD get out through my fingertips and ruin the moment by bringing up the sad idea someone had of placing that "interesting" table right next to her.
There is merit to my words as her hands are the ones creating magic at that moment and you find your eardrums mocking your retinas.
❤
❤❤❤❤
👌👏👏❤️❤️❤️💐🙏

She's always had "fat" notes, in a good way. Anyone see this?
3:24 (For me)
bros floating
The waterfall pieces are what really makes me amazed !! Thank you again !

Too fast version
It's an arabesque
The tempo for this should come from the speed of the longer-note lines and she judges it to perfection to give them such direction and life as I have never heard before.
Walter Gieseking unsurpassable disappointing here
