In the US a lot of sidewalks are privately owned, like in front of some stores or hotels, but they cannot deny public access. They can't come out and tell you to get off their land. Private does not always mean you can't be there.
I own the sidewalk in front of my house, but there is a public right of way that allows everybody to use it.
