I had an uncle who was arrested for stealing a candy bar in a drug store. He had $600.00 cash on him. It was the thrill of doing it that drove him. It's actually an issue with some people.
I retired from Costco last year after working there for 34 years. It still amazes me that people steal when they have the money to pay for their items. He did not look like he was starving. (Not going to mention the bottles of wine previously stolen. LOL)

For those saying 'I just don't get why', I can offer my experience. I used to steal like that. Have a pocketful of money. For me, I also had internal issues I'd never dealt with. Stealing was like cutting. A release of pain and anxiety for stuff I didn't know how to deal with. I spiraled into alcoholism and got treatment and have been sober 22 years now. Once I exposed and worked on those issues I swore I'd never tell, the impulse to drink, steal, cut, etc to relieve the anxiety and pain left me. My living amends to the stores I've stolen from is to not steal anymore. I did most of my stealing during the 70's and 80's (from a child into my 20's) so no way to pay them back as they don't exist anymore. I'm not using it as an excuse, just saying what happened to me. Hope it helps
I hate thieves but as this story went on I came to feel bad for the old man. I do believe he has a compulsion, as I have seen it before. When he was questioned and said "there's no explaining it" I felt he was sincere. And he was very polite and cooperative throughout. I feel more sad for him than anything.

There is a reason Costco has memberships…. It significantly reduces theft (shrinkage) and they can deny memberships to individuals who are convicted or suspected of shoplifting, as well as trespass members who have been caught shoplifting.

The policy for 18 months is from the Police dept. of Palm Gardens, FL. The Lifetime ban is Costco's policy, and will also cover the Costco he stole from. ;)

The LP guy had looked back at the last few visits and found he’d stolen wine, so that’s what he was paying for now. The LP guy was saying at the beginning that he’ll go back on the guy’s prior visits to see if he stole anything else and got away with it, come to his court date, and add those stolen items to the case, along with the accompanying video evidence.
The guy stole a sandwich... At least he was co-operative and admitted it. He won't do it again. I think he is cured. He could have just walked around inside eating free samples for an hour and eaten as much food as he stole.
