For those saying 'I just don't get why', I can offer my experience.
I used to steal like that. Have a pocketful of money. For me, I also had internal issues I'd never dealt with. Stealing was like cutting. A release of pain and anxiety for stuff I didn't know how to deal with.
I spiraled into alcoholism and got treatment and have been sober 22 years now. Once I exposed and worked on those issues I swore I'd never tell, the impulse to drink, steal, cut, etc to relieve the anxiety and pain left me.
My living amends to the stores I've stolen from is to not steal anymore. I did most of my stealing during the 70's and 80's (from a child into my 20's) so no way to pay them back as they don't exist anymore.
I'm not using it as an excuse, just saying what happened to me. Hope it helps

Yah you can’t steal and get away with it. That would be like someone stealing from your house but the cops didn’t catch them while they were still at your house. They would be then say sorry they are gone we can’t charge them anymore they got away with it.
