Kicking Rust's Butt (Or Rust Kicking My Butt - You Be The Judge) Restoring a Classic Porsche 911 Pt6

  • Guess what, MORE RUST! This classic 1984 Porsche 911 is a minefield of rust and disaster! We went from a shiny red Porsche to one with no sills or rear arches! Rust definitely loves to hide!
We find yet more rusty bits on the structural tub of the car, but this is 1 step closer to getting this beauty back on the road!
We hand fabricate structural parts to this car and cut the sills off, but not before really bracing this car up to make sure nothing moves in the golden rust extraction process!

As always, this 78 yr old Aussie codger in Perth Western Australia, can sit down with a coffee and watch more amazing work. Oh how I admire the work at YCR and the professional "let's do it right first time" attitude and ability, Oh to be at least 60 yrs younger and having the ability or opportunity to do this as my chosen profession! Respect to you all and for the lessons in the respective processes. I wait every week for both your posts and those of Fitzee and Kyle Carter from Canada, as you make my day with cool old school professional work.

Love the new format with explanations. It’s amazing how much rust a supposedly “clean” car actually holds.

I don’t think you “dodged a bullet” by taking the engine/gearbox (the weight) out before even investigating the common rust issues on the sills and kidney bowls, I’d call it professional knowledge. The amount of work you have stopped having to do to recreate door gaps, rooflines etc will result in a repair cost and time saving. Admirable work. 👏🏻👏🏻

Many years ago a mate fell in love with an early 911 and bought it without having it thoroughly inspected. Came around to show it off and we went for a ride. It was winter and he turned the heater on. The air in the car filled with rust flakes belching out of the vents. Cost him an enormous amount to get sorted. He wasn't happy, for some reason.....

If i were the owner of this i would be having kittens by now.
However this is all about integrity, and this gives a perfect example. Not just the fact the guys are not hiding anything, but the structure underneath the lipstick and makeup is kept to factory and above. From the initial assesment i guess it escalated, but you always end up pouring money into things you fall in love with.
The main thing is that finished, it will look the Mutts nuts again, but the owner knows it is sound. Good investment using one of the best companies you could employ.
Love the new format emerging too.

Definitely agree on the new format, for the non restoration people amongst us (me included) makes it easier to follow along. but yes it does show that a shiny surface can reveal all sorts of horrors underneath.

The Porsche did not look bad at all before you started. I like the way you handle it, no shortcuts, no mercy. I remember how I saved a friends VW T4, it started small but then it turned mental...now five years later it is still rustfree.

i would normally describe a car in this condition as a teabag, yep full of holes and don't hold water
amazing work, always the way in any restoration, every piece you cut away reveals more issues
but that laser, wow, amazing witchcraft, i'm sure i have seen this before somewhere cleaning other things, hmmm sure it was a slightly secret military application perhaps on the Master Milo channel, mind the direction you point it, don't catch the paper alight around the dash, that be instant fire ball
makes you wonder who and how they discovered this, by accident, wonder just how long this is effective for, but i guess by applying the rust inhibitor the metal should be good for another 20 years, and i swear by the almighty zinc products too and the weld through primer, excellent stuff

Crazy good work as usual, only pointer I can make is you might as well fabricate Porsche and BMW specific box section jigs that you bolt into the interior to keep the car stiff (and in alignment from the get-go now that I think about it, 2 birds with one stone).

The only thing that amazes me more than the absurd places the rust occurs. Is the quality of the technical fabrication to correct.
But didn’t Porsche start galvanizing all their 911 Carrera in a 8000° zinc bath since 1978? How the hell Can a Porsche have this much rust in such bizarre crevices, seams and panels?

I like your restoration videos very much. Especially the Porsche videos are interesting for me as I am owning an 85' Carrera myself. But your videos make me also a bit nervous...🥴
When you disassembled the seats I missed the switches for the height adjustment until I saw that they are placed at the tunnel side of the seat. This seems to be not original. At least in my left-hand driven Carrera the switches are at the door side of the seats but not at the tunnel side. Has the owner mixed up the driver and passenger seat?
