R3 shooter here - thanks for the note about the C2/C3 modes - that was driving me insane not having access, and I didn’t have time to read the massive manual. Also appreciate the mention about eye control affecting exposure metering
Canon EOS R3 review video coming next. Shot but need to edit the video first. Thanks! More info at the written review www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r3.htm
Very nice and concise video. Your years of experience are apparent. What I like about you Ken is you are direct and to the point, no fluff for any brand.
No. Why? I use an iPhone or dedicated video camera for motion picture work. This seems like a silly waste of a very advanced still camera To use for just video. Thanks!
Thank you Ken for the great little walk through especially about the Sound memo this is really going to help me with memory issues i have from my accident. do you feel that it takes up more battery at all to use that feature?
No. Easy to try yourself; not like we’re taking throw-away batteries. Let me know if you see anything. The R3 has such a big beautiful battery I should hope it’s fine.
Because unless you're shooting in B&W, one of the three colors will overexposes first, and you can't see this using only the monochrome (or luminance) histogram. I explain this with pictures at www.kenrockwell.com/tech/yrgb.htm Thanks! (the RGB histogram IS an exposure histogram)
I don’t. Never liked HSS, the system (on all cameras) wastes too much power. Barring that, you set it the same way you set every other flash mode, either in the camera’s own “external flash control” menu and/or at the flash itself. Thanks!
Is the R3 worth the cost? Or would you recommend something else for Friday Night Lights. I need a big prime of at least 300mm f2.8 and cant find a good one. Everyone seems to have discontinued all lens for Canon in the 300mm range.
Mine works great. Check settings; try eco mode, shoot (don’t piddle with playback or settings), and I never waste my time with video on this. The r Japanese still cameras often suck huge amounts of battery power trying to shoot video; use an iPhone or a dedicated video camera.
Ken is required reading. 2022 Porsche? Well played! Preparing to sell my Viper Green 1972 Porsche 911 T Targa - Runs great, original mechanical fuel injection.
@@KenRockwellTV The 72 911 has the fuel door just front of driver’s door and…they put a similar looking door just rear of the passenger door for oil fill. The inevitable happened, people poured in gas where the oil was supposed to go.
Thanks! Actually I tried charging in a 2022 macan, but since I had no photo of that Macan I swapped in a different Porsche and muted the audio for “Macan.” Thanks!
Always enjoyable. The only question that occurred to me: can you un-link eye focus and eye exposure? That could get frustrating - oops, where I want to focus isn't where I want to expose. Not that I plan to get the R3, at age 80 I sold the Canon full-frame DSLR gear and got a 13 Pro Max, a cute little photo-video-audio beast with very minor telephonic functions. :) Like you, I've been shooting a long time. First camera a 1939-ish Zeiss Ikon borrowed from my Dad. Second camera a really lousy Miranda Sensorex (shudder).

@@KenRockwellTV It may, in 2020, be inferior, yet in 1975 it was not. And as a Minolta user the R3 had the same shutter as my XE5. So whenever I see R3 I think of leica. Period.
Hi Tony, There's an easy fix. Find the gear icon or settings in your particular RUclips player, select Playback Speed, and try 0.75x or 0.5x. Problem solved. Cool, huh? I like to move along pretty fast; I'm not a RUclipsr and have real shooting to get back to. Thanks!!!

Thanks! In the USA we always can call Canon at (800) OK-CANON which is where I learned how to do this on my 1DX III.
It's always a pleasure to hear your tutorials and thoughts on new cameras!
Thank you!!!
Thanks a bunch!!! Had mine a year and had no idea I could charge from USB-C.
Quite welcome!!!
Great to see a new video from you. Keep them coming here and there!

Thank you!! I go out of my way to keep things short and to the point.
Guess what took me three videos to understand this one. Love it, very comedic and informative.
Thank you!!!
Always teasing us with that 50mm f/1.0 😃 Very nice to hear you! Thanks! 😊

Can you do a review of the video functionality of R3?
No. Why? I use an iPhone or dedicated video camera for motion picture work. This seems like a silly waste of a very advanced still camera To use for just video. Thanks!

I doubt it
Mostly a Nikon shooter here - but always good to hear from you Ken. Love to see you uploading videos more often.
Canon EOS R3 review video needs to be edited and look for it soon. Thanks!
Even with the power off you can see the exposure mode. Is there a way to shut that off when the camera is off?
Beats me; search Canon’s 1,037 page manual here cam.start.canon/en/C010/manual/c010.pdf
R3 ! The goat !😉🇨🇵
Vive la belle France!
Nice to see another video Ken
Looking forward to your review on the Nikon Z 9
All the very best
I’m looking forward to getting mine! Thanks!
Good tips thank you. Any idea how much battery the GPS uses?
No. Easy to try yourself; not like we’re taking throw-away batteries. Let me know if you see anything. The R3 has such a big beautiful battery I should hope it’s fine.
Thanks for this. My R3 is on the way and I love looking for tips before I even pick it up, just so I'm ahead of the curve ;)
Yes! I love it! Hope you do, too.
Great, very helpful
Thanks!
Why do you use a color Histogram and not an Exposure Histogram?
Because unless you're shooting in B&W, one of the three colors will overexposes first, and you can't see this using only the monochrome (or luminance) histogram. I explain this with pictures at www.kenrockwell.com/tech/yrgb.htm Thanks! (the RGB histogram IS an exposure histogram)
How do you work the high speed sync on the R3
I don’t. Never liked HSS, the system (on all cameras) wastes too much power. Barring that, you set it the same way you set every other flash mode, either in the camera’s own “external flash control” menu and/or at the flash itself. Thanks!
Bravo!

Worth it if you’re loaded or if you appreciate the features and use it often. See www.kenrockwell.com/tech/is-it-worth-it.htm for more. Thanks!
I haven't heard the name Ken Rockwell since I first started photography.
Good, that means you’ve been off shooting rather than researching cameras. Thanks!
Hi Ken, is there an adaptor for RF mount to Z mount (RF to Z)?
No. No room.
Any comments on the sensitivity of the shutter release. it seems to be difficult to pre focus with out tripping the shutter. Have you noticed this?
Nope. Mine works just like every other camera. Sorry for your trouble and thanks for the question!
If I’m understanding your question correctly…If you set it up for back button focus you won’t have this issue.
Any issues with the battery? Mine keeps dying really fast. I am not sure what to do other than buying a second one.

Hi Ken and anyone else reading this,
Please help us and make a request to Canon to let us turn off IBIS without turning off lens stabilization.
Why? This keeps it simple. Thanks!
So now I have to buy a Porsch to charge my camera
You don't have to, but it' a great option.
👍🏾🙏🏾
Thanks!!!
When you have a toddler you understand why leaving your £5800 camera on the desk charging is a bad idea.

Sad but true. Most people who buy this are not full time career pros like you see in the movies. Thanks!
