- Running with runner's knee. If you're running with knee pain, you probably know that taking a rest from running (or reducing your weekly training load) will help your knee pain to recover. The question is: how do you know whether you need to take days, weeks or even months off from running to cure your patellofemoral pain syndrome.
In this video, I'm going to show you one of the most important aspects of your knee pain to understand. Once you think about your knee pain in terms of severity and irritability, you'll be able to make sensible decisions about whether or not you'd be better served by resting your knee and allowing it to heal.

Don’t run through pain. Correct your mechanics, you can and will run, but if you are in pain, you need to set things straight with your body first.
You really remind me of Marshall from How I met your Mother.
I can't unsee it now lol
It’s as if this video was made just for me! So clear and relevant to people’s actual experiences and thought processes. Thank you.
A brilliant video. I’ve had runners knee since the end of January. I’ve taken a long break since then and the pain is no longer there. Also will focus on strengthening the knee and legs in general and then ease my way back into running. Great video
Ran 60 miles last Sunday and my right knee has been dealing this since. Ran 3 miles yesterday and it came back after half a mile.
how has it healed, since a year passed?
Are you ok now???
60 miles???
I touch your toes please saved my life from this knee problem... My life is hell without running
Same problem 😭
Do you feel better now?
An excellent video James, many thanks.
currently going through epic runners knee pain at the minute well-timed video. cheers
Thanks, Michael. Hope the video helps. There are a bunch of other videos on runner’s knee on this channel. Hope it heals quickly 🙏
Michael Richardson How are you doing now??? Are you able to run?
Guys how did u cure your pain? I struggle with it for 3 weeks already
@@Jaa_morant hi , i use Voltaren forte gel to massage my knee and i feel better
@@costy866 I also use this gel, but it doesn’t cure the pain entirely, does it? I have no idea how to get rid of pain entirely- should I do light exercises or rest. My behind the knee area hurts when walking
A great video again!
Excellent video, thanks
I was pretty curious to know what you were going to say. I totally agree!
It's all about strengthening those key muscles and engaging the right muscles with proper form.
Thanks James for a great video!
Thanks for the video, JAMES DUNNE
I don’t feel pain while running or walking. My knee pain is when I am not doing anything like during the night, normally after a running day. I have been running much less now. Will try the strengthening exercises. Thanks
James, you are awesome! thank you so much for this videos. Would using an elliptical machine instead of running be a good replacement? I dont have acces to a bike or a pool to keep my fitness while I rest my knee from running? thanks!
My knee begins to hurt (while running but not while cycling) when I start approaching the 2 km mark and gets more uncomfortable if I push running a bit more although the pain subsides within an hour of rest/less movement. I've observed this trend for quite a while now, what should i do?
Thanks James! Following your exercises for knee pain saved my passion for running! Question: I am a heel/midsole strike runner. I have increased my cadence to cure my knee pain (and it works!), but now I seem to shuffle or slide on my forefoot. It is noisy and my balance forward and rearward seems poor when I run. Could my problem be from a lack of strength in my quads? Thanks again for sharing your knowledge!
Very interesting
I have it but it’s not to bad I can still practice and go to meets but Ik I should take it easy
I decided to Run on my hurt knee , Terrible idea...my knee hurts even more now and I've decided to completely stop until it feels better 100%.
Great choice!
Do you feel better?
How is your knee now ? 2 yrs later in 2023?
big thanks for the prefect explaining
iv been having an experience which I pretty much find it similar to runners knee after watching this video but still not sure! It started at 7 months ago after running down hill and its being kind of exhausting not getting fully healed since. I stopped running a lot since that time but kept hiking and the pain is irritative only when I wanna sit or after cycling on gym.
I started cycling ang quad strengthening trainings(with weight machines) on gym recently but I tent to feel pain much more after them. should I stop ?
I’ve had runners knee for 1 year+
I have runner knee pain on my right knee especially when I do running on descending ground 😭 its really frustrating 😩 this is the only sport that Im really serious.
What if I show all the signs and symptoms of runners knee, except it doesn't hurt when I run, but I've had it for around 5 months now?
I had no knee pain then I took a month break from running and playing basketball when I come back it’s almost impossible for me to quick stop due to the pain in my knees
When I start running I feel pain but very low about 200 to 300 meter but it's become normal after 300 meter.can I continue my running on daily bases plz reply me.plz plz
I ran for almost 2 hours and had this horrible pain in my knee and I came to the conclusion it was runners knee next day I was going to train my brother in law and I decided to run with pain with him lol I'm so dumb now I can't walk
21 miles into a great run and my knee locked up so painful
What you can do om knee locked up?
I play football daily, sometimes on alternate day. but since 5 days after playing for 15 mins my both knees start paining while sprinting in the game! But it stops paining as soon as I stop running. It has never happened me before . I am 21. is this a RUNNER'S KNEE ??
Hey, I’ve been doing *gymnastics* for 4 years, and I just got runners knee, ive been resting at home and *I don’t know if it is runners knee*. I might of hyper extended it, or runners knee. Plz respond. Thanks!
For a week I''ve been experiencing pain in my right knee while running. It appeared at the end of the workout, while I was running down a hill. the next day I tried to run but in 2 min I was in pain so I stopped. the next day I was feeling better. but what I'm experiencing since is a short pain while running between km 2-3. I run 2km with ease, then the pain appears, and after km 3 it goes away. I run around 4-5km as I have started running for a month only. so I;m a beginner. is that something bad or normal?
I have low severity but high irritability what do i need to do?
I have 1/10 pain the following days.. so I’m
Guessing still ok to run ?
Ah yes the good old friend of runners. The knee pain. :,)
I took a few months off, got back into it and the pain began half an hour into my run…
Sir please reply
I have runners knee pain. I have minor pain.
I have cracking sound continue without pain.
Can I sprint ....
My physio always said dont worry about weird sounds if no pain
I have pain like down the outside of my knee, is that normal runners knee or something different? It flares up after a few miles and hurts when I walk down steps after a run.
Sounds like an IT band issue mate, and when I say IT band it isn't the band itself that's the problem, but normally the glute medius being weak and/or vastus lateralis being tight. Strengthen your glute medius especially as this muscle being weak can cause hip drop when running, which leads to other muscles over compensating and getting tight such as the vastus lateralis, then once that is tight, it'll pull on the IT band as sorta which attaches through the side of the knee.
@@Peter-zw8yn Great, thanks! 👍
It's been 4 days sense I ran and it still hurts by simply getting out of bed rip lol
I don't run. I just walk. Nevertheless I have runners knee. It feels like a compliment.
I started running a couple of week ago and am really enjoying it, that being said everything was going fine so I signed up for a virtual charity run then a couple of runs ago after the run my knees started to irritate me on the inside of the kneecaps. After my rest day the pain went away so I ran again today more or less pain free, about 2 hours after the run today my knees are irritating again is this just normal and my legs getting used to running or does it sound like runners knee?
Im having the same issue as you did, any improvements as of today? :)
@@TheG00ner94 yep, legs are fine, I took 4 days off and waited for the pain to go away and started off again by running a shorter distance and slower pace, since then I have been running regular 5kms and just finished a 6km a couple days ago. Hope you get it sorted soon pal.
@@MrNobody_UK Thats great, thanks for the answer! :)
@@MrNobody_UK i have also running knee problem.. Give me some tips plz😭😭
@@rahuldutta2034 only advice i could give is to take it slow and don't rush into running, don't try to run 5km or 10 km right away, take it slow and maybe walk for some of your runs and take rest days for your body to recover.
I have runners knee for 2 years know and im getting desperate (did not run for 1.5 years)
I just attached pillows to the bottom of my shoes. In other words I purchased a new pair of NBs.
Bruh.
You bought the NB 1080v12? Is it knee-friendly? Does it helps to reduce running impact on the knee?
I've had this for 8 years. Nothing is helping 😕 I've tried everything 🙃
Looks like I'm out for 4-6 weeks 😭
Me too..
Same i watched some david goggins before a run and got a tad bit cocky haha

@@polymorphistYT ive beem out for 2 years almost

I have lived with runners knee for 3 years now. Doctors say it’s permanent now..
