The movie is SAGARA SANGAMAM, released in 1983. Kamalhaasan was doinga a Baratanatyam piece. FYI, he is a trained Baratanatyam dancer and early in his career he was a choreographer. My neighbour who was also a Baratanatyam instructor once told me that one would have to be at a different level to do what Kamalhaasan did in this song. So congrats for watching the BEST doing the BEST.

This is gem of a movie called 'Sagar Sangamam' and I would highly recommend everyone to watch it. He is a trained classical dance and this movie highlights his talent in dancing and also displays his and Jayaprada's amazing acting skills. I had watched this movie more than a decade ago, without subs. Believe me, you don't need any subs to go through this movie. The performances take you through it smoothly. It's a must watch! ❤️

Rarely I have seen leads looking as fine as Kamal and Jaya in this movie 'Sagara Sangama' . A tad melodramatic for my taste, but this movie is a near masterpiece. A celebration of South Indian art & culture, star crossed lovers and countless Indian classical dancers who never get due recognition.
Also, this was maestro Illayaraja at his absolute peak !!!

This is one of the many talents Kamal Haasan possesses. In India cinema I know only 2 actors who can dance ‘ Barathnatyam’ so fluently n well and that’s Kamal Haasan and Prabhu Deva. Yes the are barefoot because this art form should be performed that way as it’s the dance of lord Shiva. A man dancing Barathnatyam requires a lot of elegance like a female and that what Kamal Haasan does perfectly in this with his manly physique. This song so famous even after so many years due to brilliant music composing by legend Illayaraja and singing by SPB and dance by Kamal Haasan and Jayapradha. It’s a movie which shows the struggles of a traditional dancer to prove the world his talent which gets derailed due to family struggles and is a definitely a must watch movie. I am happy you said you need to watch Kamal Haasan movie cause he is extremely talented and is an all rounder in Indian cinema.

While K.Viswanath's movies were classics, and IMO some of the best Indian films ever made, I don't think these people (Rick or Korbin) can appreciate them. Even North Indians (Bollywood fans) would have a tough time relating to them. Unlike Bollywood films, these movies are simply too Indic. While mainstream Bollywood films (especially in 80s and 90s) thrived on ridiculing native Indian (or rather pre-Mughal Indian) music & dance, K.Viswanath's films reveled in them. "Sankarabharanam", "Swarnakamalam" and "Swathikiranam" were such amazing movies.

Guys, he is on point. Close to perfection. The way I can tell that is, my sister has been a practitioner of classical dancer of Kuchipudi, Bharatanatyam with exposure to Kathan and Odissi, along with Carnatic Vocal music, singing and Choreography.

Kamal Haasan (not hussan 😂) is dancing Bharatanatyam here. It's been years since I saw this so watching it now gave me a new appreciation for his immense talent.
For context, I'm trained in this dance form. He's doing a blend of classical bharatanatyam and what was typical in film dances at that time. Some of the choreography does not go well with the music but Kamal Haasan manages to pull it off well. He's an amazing dancer and artist. Jayaprada (the female actor here) is also a good dancer. And yes her outfits were so beautiful ❤️
SPB is a legend. I got a chance to see him live when I was a child and I'll never forget that day. I heard that he wasn't trained in classical indian music. Correct me if I'm wrong.

You should watch this gem of a movie from the 80s! It is mainly Kuchupidi style of dancing - it is a classical dance form coming out of Telugu region of India, Andhra Pradesh
Kuchupidi is of Mangalore right.
Paper Id no from Andhra pradesh. Mangalore region has a folk form of dance called Yaksha gaana.
Yakshagana is of Karnataka not particularly of Mangalore, but kuchupidi is one of the art in Karnataka especially Mangalore.

At last.......an SPB number....and that too from Sagara Sangamam.....a classic. Thank you again guys. You have made my day today....morning on Thrissur Pooram and now this. Let me get to the points:
1) This movie SAGARA SANGAMAM is the movie of Kamala Hasan that I recommend you watch, especially the dancing on top of the well to the song 'Thakita Thadhimi Thakita Thajonu Thandhaana'.
2) Kamala Hasan is a trained dancer....his first wife Vani Ganapathi is a great danseuse of the Bharatanatyam style of dancing that is largely prevalent as the traditional dance form in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamilnadu. It was Vani Ganapathi who introduced Kamal Hasan to the art form. Yes he is a good Bharatanatyam dancer....not great....but good.
3) coming to SPB....what can I say of the legend but that I bow to his lotus feet. A really unassuming person with a great repertoire in his voice. There is plenty that you should listen to of SPB...let me name a few:
(a) the song 'Omkara naathaanu'...from the movie SHANKARABHARANAM (Telugu)
(b) the song 'Shankaraaa'....from the same move SHANKARABHARANAM (Telugu)
(c) the song 'Mere Jeevan Saathi'....from the movie Ek Duje Ke Liye (Hindi)
(d) the song 'Mannil Indha Kaadhalindri'....from the movie Keladi Kanmani (Tamil)....don't miss the breathless portion of the long....yes, he was the first person to sing breathless even before SHankar Mahadevan did.
(e) the song 'Kadavul Amaithu Vaitha Medai'....from the movie AVAL ORU THODARKATHAI (Tamil)
(f) the song 'Nammoora Mandara Hoove'....... from the movie AALEMANE (Kannada)....In Kannada SPB has sung 1000s of great songs, this one's my favorite....I can list endless ones.....

You should watch this film. Being a classical dancer, I usually don't like how they portray classical dance in most movies, but this is true art. This is my all time favourite movie.

How can Kamal sir steal the show from SPB sir? Their talents are in separate areas, Kamal Sir in dancing and SPB Sir in singing n they are GREATS in their respective feilds. Rick n Korbin did clearly state that they would love to hear more of SPB and asked for recommendations, also for Kamal Sir's dancing prowess. One of them was right to suggest to them to watch the whole of Salangai Oli in Tamil or Sagara Sangamam in Telugu. It surely was an eye treat to watch Kamal Sir's dancing throughout the movie. It sure is my most favourite of Kamal Sir's movies. Unfortunately he doesn't dance anymore. How sad and unfortunate!!
The actress is Jaya Pradha, Satyajit Ray had called her the most beautiful actress of Indian cinema. She & Sridevi were contemporaries, both were v talented dancers

Indian classical dances ARE SUPPOSED TO BE done BAREFOOT. It is the spiritual and sacred thing about these dances which is also the most important element about them as Indian classical dance and music is all about praises of Krishna or some other deity. They are like prayers or hymns. Classical dances are always done barefoot. Be it on stage or anywhere else. That's why we touch the stage with hand and then our forehead before performance to take blessings of the deity.
