  • The Gigabyte Aero 15 X9 is a thin and powerful laptop, but how hot does it get, and is there any throttling? In this video we’ll take a detailed look at performance, see if there are any thermal or power limits, and find out what can be done to improve gaming performance and temperatures.
    I’ll investigate Gigabyte’s new AI feature, undervolting, overclocking, and show you how hot the laptop gets while gaming and under stress test with different settings, let you hear total system fan noise, and see hot spots with a thermal camera.

    For undervolting my HP Omen dc-0006nm I was using Cinebench R15, to be exact, 30 runs of it in a loop. ThrottleStop was my undervolting tool, and HwInfo64 was my diagnostic tool.
    Started the process with -125 mV of undervolt (both core and the cache), and then worked my way "up" by moving the slider in throttlestop by one increment (again, on both core and the cache). Runs after the undervolt changes were done after at least 20 minutes of cooldown, but mostly, they were run the other day. Also, I was doing all the tests while ambient temperature was between 21 and 22 degrees celsius.
    "Cold boot, no diagnostics, no unnecessary background programs" runs were also run, to see what's the absolute maximum number that could be achieved (only 1 run). That run is not included in the 30-run average. Let's call it a "Record run".
    Long story short: bests results were achieved with -150.4 mV undervolt. With that undervolt, I was able to achieve 1163.5 point as 30 run average, which is close to stock record run (1177 points). For comparison, stock 30-run average was 1014.93 points. The -150.4 mV record run was 1268 points.
    The fans are also much much quieter now and they stay at the same level for as much as you stress the cpu.
    Furthermore, I undervolted the GPU, by exactly following Bob O All Trades' video on that topic (since the gpu is the same). Regarding that, I didn't get any performance, but I shaved, around 5 degrees of the gpu, which resulted in further reduction in fan rpm's, and therfore, the noise.
    I benefited a lot from that noise reduction, especially in PUBG solo games, where before, I could hear the fans even through my closed headphones, but not anymore. Now the fan noise under full cpu+gpu load is exactly the same as my Coolermaster U2 cooling pad produces, which is almost unbelievable (the cooling pad wasn't used during testing, not even as a stand).
    To conclude, I cannot emphasize how much I recommend and encourage others to do what I did, the difference is day and night.

      From what I've found, the RTX2060 vs. RTX 2070 Max-Q is about 10-15% difference in real-world performance (while nvidia is claiming 20%). If you overclock both GPU's you might be able to bump out another %3-5 difference there. Neither card will typically throttle, especially at max fan speeds. For comparison's sake, the RTX2060 ~ GTX1070 Max-Q, RTX2070 Max-Q ~ GTX1080 Max-Q (performance wise); generally speaking that is, each laptop will differ slightly based on design and thermals. From current pricing of available options, the 2070 max-q will run you about $200 more than the 2060; worth it in my opinion if you are already spending $$$ to get top-tier performance. The 2080/2080 max-q is way past the price per performance ratio and not even close to worth spending the extra $500 or so over the 2070/2070 max-q and $700 over the 2060.

    Great review. The more reviews that come out, the more glad I am that I opted for the Asus Scar 2 GL704 with the RTX 2070. With the right tweaks, I keep a constant 3.7ghz on the CPU and my GPU stays anywhere from 1700-1900mhz. Whether gaming or stress testing, it never breaches 80°C. The best part is that I recently bought it for only $1799, which is a damned good deal compared to the thin & light models that have been reviewed so far.

      1. The Intel graphics control panel is being hidden by Windows, in which case, just look for it in your start menu where the rest of the Intel one click options are.
      2. Your m15 has a G-Sync panel, in which case the Intel graphics will always be disabled, therefore being why you cannot find it.

      Try using Intel XTU (download the program). Its a simple program and user-friendly. Google a quick guide on how to use it and you're set. Quick reference, reduce core voltage in increments of -0.010V and run the built-in stress test for 5-15 mins and if it doesn't crash, keep reducing until it does. Then go back to the last stable voltage offset. Also look up some scripting to auto-run XTU undervolt at log-on, very helpful.

    Hey Jarrod! Could you tell please, have you noticed any cpu throttling while video editing/exporting from PrPro? I see that in Stress/Gaming tests it always throttles, but what about video editing and exporting? Does it always cut CPU clock speeds in this case too?
    Choosing between Eluktronics MAG-15 and Aero 15 Classic/X9, both exactly the same price and specs. Based on you reviews I know that MAG-15 has much better thermals, but Aero's numpad and faster cardreader makes my choise a bit harder, because I don't know how they thermally differs for video editing/rendering tasks.
    p.s.I don't compare with cooler Aero OLED, because it's much more expensive than MAG-15 with the same specs.
    p.p.s. And just for the record, if you let me... It would be awesome to include some sort of unified "content creation" benchmark in your reviews, for example, each time export exact same 4K project from PrPro and Davinci Resolve. So it will be possible to compare render speeds between different reviews and laptops Because right now it's a bit hard to tell how different will they perform in content creation tasks even if they are pretty different in gaming/stess tests.
    Thank you for your videos! :)

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 лет назад +1

      I didn't explicitly measure thermals while that happens, but given this is the same chassis design as my 15x and that thermal throttles all the time, I'd suspect yes. The newer Aero OLED design has significantly improvements to cooling compared to this model. I'd prefer the MAG-15 in terms of performance over these older Aero models personally, plus you get similar features like big battery/thunderbolt/SD and also mech keyboard. In newer reviews I have Adobe Premiere export times, unfortunately I don't have data for this Aero or the OLED, but I recently added my 15X results in.

    Interesting video, thanks for another thorough upload. So it seems that it is really struggling with heat, I guess that's always going to be an issue with the form factor. I'm not seeing much gain from this RTX generation (over GTX) either which is I guess expected with the same chassis having more powerful hardware.
    I know you've tested single vs dual channel ram before, but I'm assuming you'd get better temperature/more performance for a given temperature if you ran dual? I ended up getting a good sale deal with a Zephyrus M but it's single channel and the CPU temps are high, hopefully swapping out to dual channel will help a bit. I've seen many comparisons that drop CPU temps by a decent margin and also improve performance. Anyway, keep them coming Jarrod :)

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  6 лет назад +1

      Yeah you'd get more performance with dual channel presumably at running with the same temperatures, I didn't test temperatures with single and dual channel though. I did not see too much gain with the 2070 Max-Q either, I retested the 1070 Max-Q at the same time for an upcoming comparison.

      When I had the 15" 9900K laptop I was thinking, it's not actually that big! I still really prefer thinner and lighter for travelling though, 8750H and 1070 Max-Q are plenty for what I do while travelling (video editing) so I don't really need a larger one myself. • @bradhaines3142
      @bradhaines3142 6 лет назад

      @@JarrodsTech there are a couple of ways they could add and keep the same frame. add small pipes to the existing design (easy room for 2 that i could see) or get thicker ones than it currently has. there are sizes to those, like if thats an 8mm diameter, they could up it to 10 and very likely not change the frame at all. but with that design being 3 maybe 4 years old, i could easily see it getting a refresh end of this year or early next. i do really hope they add thickness so they could really go nuts with it, it doesnt need to be like a titan, just another 5mm or 1/4th inch (2 very different sizes i know) would be plenty. also i hope they round the edges to make it easier to hold. thing is uncomfortable to pass around and doesnt look great.
