From what are they deriving the width to set the scribe? It doesn't say. In the other videos the scribe is generally set of the widest gap between two courses, but there is no lower course in either section of the video. Either the guy on the wall, or the cut man down on the ground. So what reference point are they using?

love the videos, little question as im about to make my first notches in a lifelong dream little cabin, could someone use these square notches for the whole building? i dont like the look of the scarfed saddle notches , what i always wanted was just plain round notches, but i understand that especially since i have irregular size logs, i might have gaps after a few years, compared to the saddle that fit better or just as tight as it settles. but with these square nothces here, wouldnt i get best of both worlds? tight fit, no leaks, but with the look of round notch? plus the benefit of locking corners all over? exept for the bit more work, is there a reason why i couldnt use those?
