- The Chrysler Building, designed by William Van Alen and completed in 1930, is an iconic Art Deco skyscraper in New York City, originally commissioned by Walter P. Chrysler as the headquarters for his automobile company. Standing at 1,046 feet, it was briefly the world's tallest building, known for its distinctive stainless steel spire inspired by Chrysler radiator caps. The building housed the Cloud Club, an exclusive dining club for the city's elite, on its 66th to 68th floors, which operated from 1930 until its closure in 1979. The Chrysler Building remains a symbol of 20th-century modernity and architectural innovation.

The Chrysler buildings secret Cloud Club explained in about three minutes starting @7:56.
😂
One of the most remarkable buildings in the world. I despise what is being built today; all they are is boxes with all the charm of a refrigerator.
The Blahuas School as l call it
@@mpetersen6 Very good. A friend of mine will look at some of this new junk and will blurt out, "It makes one appreciate Frank Gehry!".
@@The-Friendly-Grizzly Amen, the buildings built today are horrific, bland glass boxes with random metal panels or even more gimmicky buildings that have weird designs for the sake of trying super hard to be "innovative" (different). The architecture profession is an embarrassment.
@@jonw999999 Don't bring up architects. I am retired from lighting energy conservation survey work. Architects are very good for putting lighting in places where you rent $1200 in scaffolding and erection thereof, then pay an IBEW man well over n hour of labor to change $30 worth of lamps ("bulbs"), or make it so that lamp ("bulb") replacement is in fact next to impossible because there is NO access.
If you like Art Deco, you might want to try watching a play through of “nobody wants to dye.” it almost seems like an exposé on architecture with a narrative, like Victor Hugo’s Hunchback of Notre Dame was for Gothic architecture.
The Empire State Building may be grander, but the Chrysler Building has more class.
Went to high school on 43rd Street and Lexington, that building and the playground across from the United Nations were my best memories.
I remember you
I was fortunate to work in the Chrysler when they were finishing the new Cloud Club. A contractor brought us up to see it. I could stand next to the Eagles too. We weren't allowed to take pictures as the marketing group wanted to be the first to publish any pictures. I can tell you it is stunning. The lobby and elevators are exquisite and should be seen in person to be appreciated. Thanks.
No pics or footage of the 66-68 floors? What did it look like back in the day and today????
@@frankdecota2317 , I was wondering the same thing. There are some pictures of the Cloud Club online but it's often unclear if the pictures are historical or fictional.
From what I've heard, pictures were not allowed there. The only pictures I've seen were from either a construction worker or appraiser that was looking at the building when it was for sale I believe in the 80's. They managed to sneak a few pics of both the club and Walter Chrysler's personal penthouse at the very top. They're online somewhere. From what I remember, both areas were very ornate with copious amounts of dark wood, either natural walnut or stained oak. Both areas had been mothballed for a while so they didn't look lived in.
If you look close you can see Will Smith standing on top of one of the eagle heads getting ready to time jump.
Interesting video as usual! One small comment: would love for you to translate any historical prices into modern day dollars - it makes the figures a lot more relatable!
@@alej469 Yes that would be interesting
Fascinating! Interesting there were no photographs of the early 'womanless Cloud Club'... I dearly hope they do continue to preserve the Chrysler Building!
Nothing really about the actual “cloud club” in this 12+ minute video? Come on man
Did you watch the video? Its right before the 8m mark
💛💛💛
Thank you Ryan and It's History Team. Great video!
Well hello Professor, again another piece of History great review of this building, stay safe and be at Peace...
If I go to NYC it's the building I want to see the most
Every time I visit NYC while I wander the streets and catch a glimpse of the grand building I take a pic
I would love to see a documentary on the Williamsburg bank building at one Hanson place Brooklyn NY.
@@5argetech56 the Williamsburg clock
You failed to mention it is still the tallest BRICK building in the world still one if not the best looking bldg over 1000 ft great video
Not much about the Cloud Club.
9:39 I think some of Spider-Man’s enemies used the Chrysler building as their base. I also think the Percy Jackson universe also uses the Chrysler Building as the entrance to Mount Olympus, but it might be the Empire State
In the 90s Spiderman animated series, The Kingpin used the upper floors as the base of his operations with one of the walls below the spire being a hatch that can open for helicopters and flying villains to enter and leave his base.
@@Cyber_kumo There was also the 1982 film "Q -- The Winged Serpent," where the Aztec monster used the spire of the Chrysler Building as its lair.
Great video. Have always admired the Chrysler Building. Thanks Ryan!
My favorite iconic NYC building!
I believe you can visit the building for Open House New York, at least a bit more of the building that you normally can. This is a fantastic underrated building that has aged well aesthetically and in popular opinion.
It would be a sad day for NYC if they allowed the Chrysler building to be lost..
Main reason behind the market collapse was that as a result of the Fed increasing interest rates (the Fed should never have kept interest rates low to being with) and the stock margin loans were called by the banks. The specs had two choices: post more margin or liquidate. Margin clerks began liquidating accounts that did not post more margin. That is a margin call. Today computers do that work and there are no longer any margin clerks. And computers move a lot faster than humans.
you hardly said anything about the club itself. a google image search taught me more
The Chrysler building could be converted into a mixed use structure, with office space on the lower tiers, and hotel & residence spaces in the main tower. Each floor in the main tower could be split into up to 4 good sized residences, or several smaller hotel suites. I am a preservationist, but I do feel that it is time to move these grand old buildings into the modern era & give them new life for decades to come.
Love your documentaries.
It's such a bummer there's no observation tower there , people can't go up to see the architecture . I live in nyc since 84 from la and it's my favorite bldg
Secret club? There was an article in the newspaper about it.
If the current owners were smart they'd lean into the buildings elite design and historical prominence by reopening the lucrative skydeck but with limited occupancy and higher prices since newer and taller decks would always win over this older and shorter one for all but a few history buffs... They should also convert the smaller upper floors to hotel and condo units because the market for those types of small but expensive micro apartments would probably strike a chord with owner/investors... I know I'd love to sip a cocktail from the top of that building one day...
I can imagine what a symbol of hope for the future the building's construction gave during one of the darkest times in American history.
The movie "Q: The Winged Serpent" (1982) features some interesting shots inside the cone at the very top of the Chrysler Bldg.
Recent newspaper articles discuss the Chrysler's fall onto hard times, parts of it badly decayed and abandoned.
And there's no public "Cloud Club" dining and event venue ever mentioned in the press.
Its second iteration must have closed long ago. (Otherwise I'd make it a point to visit.)
Probably the most beautiful building in NYC
I have lived in New York all my life, and I never really attached the Chrysler Building to the car company. I don't know why it never clicked with me. I suppose I just never thought of it.
My dentist used to be at the top. The chair was in one of the triangular windows facing central park. Dr. Apfel (?) I'm sure his son took over the practice.
It is a very cool building.
Makes me think of interesting co-tenets of some buildings. Might be something worth investigating
The Chrysler building top floor is the Home-base of Doc Savage
A few blocks. Over is another interesting bldg 570 lex it would be great if you did video on the original RCA/GE bldg it is also lost among the behomths of the supertalls the also NYC gem
The Chrysler building was used in the opening scenes of the 1947 crime drama,The Kiss of Death.
The Chrysler building was also the first skyscraper to have air conditioning, quite a feat for 1930.
Very good report, but you've got me accustomed to it. I especially appreciate your doing your own narration and not reverting to AI. Please promise that will never change.
Hi just got done watching this video. Just to let you know it was also featured in the. Video game parasite Eve on the PlayStation.
Ive wanted to go to the top of this building for years.. rumors have it that there is a toilet right under th needed and its so narrow the sink to wash your hands is a few steps down for the bowl
I've been up there 3 or 4 times.
I always love the Christ of building, and the eagles and a result aluminum. But I would love to go up into the top where you can look out of those beautiful windows that almost serve no purpose 🥰👑💪
What happen to the story of the club???????????????????????????
