AUS8 and AUS10 seem to be under rated, by and large, as material for stuff like camp knives. I keep seeing them tested with surprisingly good results.
@warthog11966 I think it's a little like D2- at some point someone was putting out poorly heat treated AUS8.
I still have my SCHF52 in micarta scales which was basically the same knife. It had those early terrible nylon sheaths but at least it was 1095. It doesn't seem much use these days but it still is a great budget chopper.
I've had the SCHF52 for years and it's still a great knife. Nylon sheath sucks but the knife is good. Glad they have the plastic sheath now.
It looks like the 52 doesnt it?
It's a new version of the SCHF52 but with overmolded handle, stainless steel and what looks like a thinner blade stock. I like AUS8 in general but more even for tough use. It is more likely to bend than break and that's great for an 'impact' tool. The sheath looks ok and an improvement on the sheath the SCHF52 came in.
Im wondering if its worth buying again in the newer version. The 52 isnt heavy as such but it could stand to diet 😂
@@primafacie5029 I'm wondering the same. I think for me it would be an improvement since I think the 52 is heavy and possibly overbuild. I also prefer stainless over carbon steel. The sheath is thinner and would ride well inside my backpack. But not sure if the improvements are enough to spend the money on it.
I can clear the "more viewers for budget knife videos" mystery up for you, at least for me. I'm more interested in seeing the "budget" range blade reviews because I want to know what works that I can afford and that I'm actually going to use. Simple as that. I replied to someone on the last video who mentioned they had some old Schrades and still use them that I have several and I use them all the time too. And I mean literally every day. I almost always have one in my pocket and I use it. I have more expensive knives, a few of them actually and some of them are custom, and they sit in their boxes and rarely come out because I don't have any daily use for them. You mentioned "not a RUclipsr busting through sections of telephone poles" and with that you nailed it. Most of us cut string, open boxes, cut tape, open overly packaged and plastic wrapped things with our knives. I have two knives I take camping, an SCHF13 I wear on my belt and an SCHF10 I keep in my fire kit. I use them and they're absolutely perfect for what I do with knives. And if one of them breaks.. oh well. It was my fault and I have another one of each back home waiting to pull out and start using because I bought two of each because I could afford two. It's been nearly ten years, I haven't broken one yet, so I still have two of each. I love my expensive knives, I wear then I get the urge to pull one out. Anyway, thanks for the reviews of the new line of Schrades. Of course some are going to be winners and some aren't, that's true for any brand. But it's good to see them in action so we can decide for ourselves.
I'm 65. I have a Schrade LB7 that I bought when I was 14. It has seen a lot of use and miles and is still in great shape. Too bad they do not make them like that any longer.
I continue to be confounded by these newer Schrade knives. I didn't want to like them, and yet, here we are. Great video Chris! Keep em coming1
Nice to see this content return Chris. I have an Schf 37M in 8Cr13mov from 2015. No issues with it over almost a decade.
Cold steel was using ASU 8 many moons ago I have a bush ranger that's a big ass camp knife and it is badass.
Not sure about that 65mn Steel , it does good on the thicker Kershaw Camp 10 , but l put a HUGE Chip in my Camp 14 and there are video's of other people breaking the 14 and also the Camp 18 and the are also 65mn Steel but they are thinner higher Full Flat Grinds . Wish I could show you a picture on here , I can fit my Wrist inside the chip on the 14 it was weird how it just chipped out so big ....👍🖖
Nice to have a budget option. They often get more hard use than the more expensive ones.
It's a shoking day when a high carbon cold steel doesnt hold up but a schrade breezes on through the testing
No Problems Feather Sticking
Thank you for taking us out to the woods to play.
I had a schf52m and it was pretty decent.
Wow im actually kinda impressed with Schrade so far, this is a big time turn around from past knives(redesigned) and new blade steel. Very interesting.
I like the Bedrock and, I bought the AUS-8 Leroy after seeing your review! Liking Schrade more and more... Good series!
i have a couple schrades i got on clearance very impressed with them
Thank you for never stopping Chris. Keep going til' the wheels fall off!
Hey Chris, long time subscriber. I would love to see a video of yo explaining the differences, pro and con of the different knife steels.
Thumbs up! If Schrade's stuff keeps holding up I think they will do well in this current market. Thanks for the vid Chris!
The Schrade SCHF37 along with the 36 & 38 were 1/4” 1095 knives with different handles. I saw several of you Tubers snap the tips off the hollow ground 36 & 37’s. The Schf38 with it’s much less pronounced hollow grind was passing everyone’s tests back in the day...
Finally got one from a friend. It is noticeably thinner in stock and thus weight than both the 52 it was modelled on and its grandfather the 37 (which was thicker than the 52)... it thus is not the chopper it's predecessors were. I'm not sure if that's a feature or a flaw as I liked the weight of both the 37 and 52.
Chris I have watched you from the beginning. I wish nothing but good things in your life. Not talking about your reviews, which have been informative but you personally, we've never met or talked but I feel you are headed in the right direction spiritually in your life. Stay true to your path, love you man!!!!
Thanks. That's a change. Usually it's "You're decieved, Bro" (No I won't read your proof either...) 🙄
Can't wait to see your next knife design. Or your old designs produced more
I have a old Schrade 52 M . I think its a 2015 and its 1095 steel .. Love mine . I do like that sheath
How deep of a hollow grind is on the tip of your knife? The tip on my knife has a deep hollow grind that looks like it might snap off if I breathe on it too hard.
its kinda deep . not had any problems in the 8 years I've had it . Has a great heat treatment on it @@grepora
Still rocking a schf9 (recurve/kukri styled 1095 chopper) and its just a beast. Bulletproof.
I still use my Schrade Froe you designed for breaking down wood for my fire pit. Sure wish they would revisit Jess X
Appreciate the reviews on their AUS-8. Am debating getting a Steel Driver.
Did anyone else see that big ol spider on the right side of that log starting at 19:16 !
Revisit the SCHF42 RECURVE...We're big boys now and own sharpening systems , no need for fear.
That blade was awesome .
I think Chris came around to recurves when he started using the ceramic rods.
Yes but most knife people hated them at the time. If you could get one with an even grind they were pretty awesome blades .
SCHF 42D maybe? 2:40 I don’t remember too many smaller blades like that.
Sorry I got distracted by the large spiders fighting off to the right of the screen just above the log when you’re first batoning lol.
Can you use the little sharpener on the sheath for the rod?
I really love your videos. Just keep going
I need some more Lumen talk
Agreed .. Perhaps the channel could be divided into sections? I've seen that on others....
I didnt know they changed it from 1095 to AUS 8 but yeah its a totally different knife than the original i have.
Wouldn't mind seeing their Aus10 and Aus8 compared sidexside with their 1095 and see if there is any gain in toughness and edge retention so on so forth....
Hi Chris, I saw the Wolverine and did a little research if you haven't remembered by now, my opinion is the Wolverine is a revamp of the old 56L and there is a Mini Wolverine which is probably a revamp of the 56 strangely enough although the Wolverine is AUS8 the Mini is 65MN !!!! seems a strange use of a 'chopping' quality steel for a sub 3 inch EDC blade atb Bill 😇
IIRC, the 56L had a nearly quarter-inch thick blade. It was the quintessential sharpened pry bar. I picked up a LM (micarta scales) version from SMKW on closeout for $10 or something like that. It’s a nice chunk of 1095, but that geometry is atrocious. It would be a different story if the blade was twice as tall and was a full flat grind. But it’s not. And it’s little more than a pig sticker because of that.
@JohnSmith-gs4lw according to Schrade the Wolverine is 3 mm spine like I said probably a revamp
@@misolgit69 You’re probably right, they probably changed a few things and fortunately stock thickness was one of them! 3mm would be acceptable. It’s also a much taller blade on the Wolverine so that will help with the geometry a lot.
Schrade make damn nice survival knives.
Strong Tip 🤙🏻
I think I read a review of this one saying the sheath held the knife in much too well, which might be just what I need :-)
Was curious about the Wolverine, how does it feel in hand?
I Like The Look Of This Knife
Very nice knife❤❤❤
So a good replacement for the old SCHF52M 1095 steel or no?
The 52m with 1095 is stronger and better steel
I prefer 1095 myself. Never had a rusting problem. Just dry it and hit it with a little WD-40.
The End Wasn’t Designed To Hammer On
i like to see you have more test with other but using the same knife 7 or more
How’s That Handle Feel ?
If only someone was able to convince them to stop using that dreaded hollow grind! 🤷♂️🤦♂️
Ehh the previous version schf37 (1/4 inch 1095) was way better! This one is just OK in my opinion
You can still grab some of the 5 inch ones(schf36) still 1/4 inch 1095 high carbon
And I still grab a few when I can. Nice to stock up with especially for the money, one of the best ones I've ever used!!
I actually tend to like the lil Ricky
I unsubscribed a while ago because there was too much high end stuff and focus on your own blades. It’s refreshing to see that you’ve gone back (have you?) to how the channel started.
RUclips knife and bushcraft has really went too crap. Most the stuff they send my way is girls half naked doing "bushcraft" stuff .....Its absolutely annoying and has really ruined the algorithms.
So Chris ....youre gonna have to take off your clothes bro 😂
😂
Buttoning 🤙🏻 No Problemo
Hmmm. Schrade getting their sh*t together. Who’da thunk?🤔
Cheeseburgers are good! 😊
i never liked Schrade sense they went to china in the mid 2000s but there older American knifes are great the blade steel they use is lack luster and weak
🧐
I know it’s against your M.O. but you could benefit by getting up to speed with JoeX and like videos on knife and/or steel toughness...you often counter act with what I would assume many of your viewers are seeing...
Too much blood, I would get some leeches on Chris right away, get rid of that pooling blood and increase circulation. This man’s circulation is terrible
Getting these positive reviews may be exactly why they sent you these knives and not the USA made ones first.
The USA made folders are excellent. Especially the Radok. It was so good We knives stole the entire design put a button lock on it and won kike of the year. Is literally the same blade and handle as the Schrade.
