On the Zuko thing with him being too likeable I predicted they'd do that for this adaptation but honestly I was okay with it.
I think in the cartoon you only hate Zuko for the first few episodes. I think most people start being sympathetic or even liking him with the Storm, Blue Spirit, and the finale when he says, "My father says she was born lucky. He says I was lucky to be born. I don't need luck, though - I don't want it. I've always had to struggle and fight, and that's made me strong. It's made me who I am." My brother just watched season 1 for the first time and his favorite character is Zuko. He is probably the most interesting character from the start.

Another thing is the fact that Azula and Ozai were in this season, the reason why Zuko has such a great character arc is the fact that he is a villain in the first season but here we kind of feeling sorry for him, and if he was the main villain, they shouldn’t have made Azula and Ozai in this season

Lets do some math. Original book 1 of avatar had 20 episode with about 20 minutes of run time each. That is 400 minutes of content. Netflix show is 8 episodes long at 60 minutes run time each. That is 480 minutes. The argument that they had to make cuts for time is mute since we get an additional hour and 20 minutes. That being said I did like the show. But they did not NEED to cut things.
I almost completely agree with your avatar review 6/10 for me. Vfx, cast and additions were great. Changes were awful. There's a distinct difference in additions and changes and the changes sucked. No katang was awful, bumi, aang and his guilt, random season 2 timeline changes for season 1.
My biggest issue with the 2 episodes in omashu are the same (tunnel and bumi changes) and it really sucks because I genuinely love every other sub plot there. I like how they handled the freedom fighters I love the change of Zuko being in the city with Iroh. But the who bad just outweighs the good for mw
WAY too much complaining about CGI from Alex, to say One Piece CGI was better when it had the worst CGI scene in Netflix history when Sanji was on the Island with Zeff was easily far worst then anything shown in ATLA-LA
Narratively, the "biggest relationship" is Zuko and Aang's friendship. Those two were destined to become friends so they could repair the friendship broken by Sozin and Roku a hundred years ago. The whole series is littered with parallels between Zuko and Aang, and the two even share dreams because of their spiritual connection. Katara might be Aang's lover but Zuko is Aang's soulmate (soulmates are not necessarily romantic). Iroh, as an enlightened spirit, and Korra, who is Aang's own reincarnation and knew Katara her whole life, state that Zuko knew Aang better than anyone, including Katara. Zuko and Aang's relationship is just way more important story-wise than Katara and Aang's relationship.
Andrew- TOTALLY RIGHT about the Zutara stuff! And I say this not just with shipping brain, but with core philosophy brain. Let me explain.
I can see the idea of "well Aang's crushing on her and it's kind of one-sided for a lot of the time and etc etc", BUT, the issue with changing the source material here is it will FUNDAMENTALLY CHANGE the show. An example from Game of Thrones, since the showrunners referenced it, would be if they changed the relationship between Robert Baratheon and Cersei. Like, even if you think that they're not right for each other, the point still remains that that is a core plot point for the show, and you cannot change it without fundamentally changing the show and massive beats down the line.
Like, if Aang isn't head over heels for Katara, how different will the episode where Azula shoots him be, plus the episode where he can't unlock his chakras? Because I feel like part of the original show is the idea that even if you can't untether yourself from the world, all that that means is that you have something worth fighting for.
Not even to mention if this is successful, what about the world by the time you get to Korra? And will Zuko/Mai just be a love triangle?
Idk I think it's just a stupid decision, I'd be more okay with them leaning heavily into Sokka/Toph because at least that seems on the table from both ATLA and Korra, and wouldn't fundamentally change anything.
people have theories that suyin is sokkas actually which i could kinda see tbh, i always loved tophs subtle crush on sokka in the cartoon
i dont think it would be wise to build the romance in the first season i think theyre building the friendship first. The actors just look way too young. Aang looks like a babay its not like the animated showw where they could sort of get away with it. In season 2 i think theyll start pushing it more

I feel like the actress for suki should’ve played Katara,she more animated,the way she moves and emotes, I would’ve given her the damn hair loopies and I mean no disrespect but The actress playing Katara was giving nothing
I would agree with you both. I'm somewhere between 6 or 7 out of 10. I believe this show is what we should have gotten back in 2010 so you would think in 2024 it would be a lot better. It's good but I wasn't floored or blown away. Some of the actors shined but a few were flat.
In my opinion I actually really like the Avatar the last airbender live action just because I haven’t watched the OG so I can’t really compare it but I enjoy the show. Love you guys ❤

Very valid solid review, only thing is I think they strayed away from Katara And Aang because he had to be like 10-12 while filming and she would’ve been 14-15. Kinda weird if they kissed unlike the original we can separate that he’s 112. But now that he’s getting older they can move into Katara And Aang
See I actually don’t have many issues with volume screens! I think certain settings mixed with certain color grading can look bad, but for an example, the percy jackson show used a volume screen to make it seem like they were in the MET and I had no idea they weren’t actually in the MET until I watched the documentary! I think it definitely has its moments, both good and bad, but I hardly notice it in things like Mando
I haven’t watched ATLA though so I have no idea how it looked in that show

There are certain reasons ppl still in love with the OG animation. U just can't delete most of them and try to compensate with flashy CGI, then say "take it as something different". It doesn't work. Fans stay fan for so long for certain reasons. U can't take away those reasons. U can't say accept whatever we are presenting since it has same name/IP.
This has become a disease in current entertainment industry. They lost ability to create their own classics so what they do is vandalize already existing ones in greed of cashing the nostalgia and loyalty of fans, then ignore the same fans while making it. The biggest culprits are the ones who keeps saying "it wasn't that bad", "they are not same" or "don't judge them too early" and defend such mediocre and awful stuff. Fans doesn't show up to see how u can twist their loved franchise, they show up to see the thing they love once more, maybe in a new setup. U can't change characters, story, theme and say "just accept it. U are a fan, no? How can u dislike ur own favorite show since it has same name?". The backlash is pretty strong now as u see in Disney and Marvel. We seen what happened to Snow white. There is still time to understand why such adaptations don't work at all, unless u love backlashes and losses.
I agree with the NAtla review. I really liked what they did with zuko and koh. I just wish they didn’t change why aang ran away. Him leaving to clear his head was kinda dumb imo. Overall I’d give it like a 7.5. I give it the extra .5 because my dad who hasn’t seen the original quite liked the show.

I believe that the remake lacks the thing that make the animation one great, but this doesn't make the new serie bad. It is just not as good, but I don't believe it would has been posible to make it at the same level as the original one.

None of the “changes” they liked were even changes. Other than them adding multiple storylines into omashu. They were just additions of the already told story into the main story. Which is just fan service at that point because it’s things they already know fans want to see more of (ie Iroh & his son)

Don’t you think that the kind of “Balance” between the elements in the animation did not exist in the live action version- in the live action the fire element is by far the best and I get that it’s fire so it’s distracting but in the animation it’s a balance, as a kid I couldn’t really choose between the elements, every single one had a special theme to them which in the live action there is not… Just an overall feeling

What if anakin didn’t win the pod race would be interesting
It was about average for me 6 or 7 out of 10 (I think One Piece Live Action was a stronger Live Action) - I obviously was never gonna beat the animation and they made some ass decisions (I hated that they didn’t make Aang run away and why there was so much season 2 stuff). It switched between peak action and moments and then poor writing and directing that I think let it down a lot (god the exposition was too much). I felt like the writing and directing let down certain characters like Katara which was a massive letdown for me, she’s not passionate, they made sokka more of the parent and she just didn’t really do anything (overall I think female characters could have been stronger considering strong female characters is what it’s known for). I did end up enjoying the last 4 episodes than the first bunch but I kinda got over nitpicking. The fourth episode was a mess for me and by far my least favourite, I hated the Bumi stuff and I don’t get why they ended up friends or HOW AANG WOULD NAME HIS SON AFTER BUMI. I do think it didn’t have a big concept of time and geography when Aang flew to the fire nation. BUT I LOVE KYOSHI SO THAT WAS EPIC and I loved the fire nation stuff. I do kinda hate how split the fandom has become making it either like it’s the best thing ever or the worst lol
On a huge big positives was that it introduces new people (my parents for instance) and it gives Asian talent a big show front and centre which is something to celebrate.
It does make me nervous for season 2 with how they characterise Toph and what they’ll have time to do (Appa gonna be gone for 10 minutes with the pacing) BUT I’m also nervous for how people are gonna respond to avatar studios content and how critical people are going to be for that.
I love the remake but nothing beats the origanal.

Katara Didn't need training. Katara is already a master teaching worthless guys how to do it. Paku's relationship with Gran Gran was too oppressive to have. Paku needed to be given full on lecture to show bad mysogyny is. Aang didn't even need to train since master Katara is there 😂😂😂.
Yup! Perfect show. Nothing wrong there. Very transparent characterizations. Just glad they still killed the princess which probably was gonna be changed as it felt 😂. It might be another sign of women oppression for them

How bad is the Avatar Netflix show? Is it 'the show is bearable to watch' kind of bad or is it 'Come back M Night Shyamalan, all is forgiven' kind of bad?

Have not listened yet as I write this, but dang to me this series was terrible. The changes made are so unjustified and serve nothing. The characters have no charm or charisma. Trying to look at this separate from the OG, it is still a bad show. Pacing is terrible, acting is sub par, writing is sloppy, directing is amateur, some wigs and make up are so cheaply done. The only episode that was enjoyable was ep. 6 and then the moments with Suki in ep. 2. Also, the bending did look pretty great and the scenery was all gorgeous. Otherwise highly disappointed
The changes don’t matter though. Most of the changes have no effect on the main story just interweaving it. Most actually make more sense in a live adaptation. I do think the characters relationships weren’t allowed to breathe that’s the main thing which they could fix by having more episodes. Like Aang for instance never waterbended and put it off which pissed me off. Katara fell flat because didn’t give her enough personal moments with Aang nor did she feel fierce in her bada** moments. Sokka was okay nothing crazy but nothing horrible. Zuko and iroh were the saving grace in terms of relationship building and acting. I also hard disagree on the pacing. The pacing is way better than the og book 1. The air temple for example if you didn’t watch the show it’d come off as good because it’s rounds out the first part of the episode. The writing is also decent and makes more sense for live action like Bumi for instance was a great change because realistically it make sense to have some resentment but not full on hatred or just ignoring all that harshness Aangs actions has brought. The main problem with the writing is the exposition dumping which brings it down but doesn’t destroy it. I think this series rounds to a 6.5/10 with easy room for improvement if they continue it taking in the criticisms and praises.

I understand changes were to happen, but the changes they chose and the execution of them are what matter, just one example is the way their mom died in this version. That’s a pretty big difference and changes Katara’s character in a big way. I highly disagree on the writing being decent. The writing throughout is very clunky and sloppy. And what they did for Bumi is awful. The whole point is that, despite of what happened in those 100 years, he still supports his friend and knows he has what it takes. It’s a powerful moment to show that the one person alive that has a connection to Aang, still matters to him and believes in him. Agree to disagree, if you enjoyed it I’m glad! Just was not my cup of tea

The pacing was bad the acting was bad they put Tao in the very beginning but not haru and it was only 8 episodes and they made sang all so serious there was no romance between aang and katara and they removed sokka sexism which makes his a better character
I kinda wish Azula was a bit darker. Don't get me wrong, I like who they casted fit Azula in NATLA but I was kinda expecting a bit darker, like how the animated series was...you giving Bellatrix Lestrange vibes(like a bit psycho)
