Did you have a bad day? Yet, if you're healthy. That's most important. Enjoy a glass of wine or maybe single malt scotch. And enjoy this beautiful music. A good book might also help. Tomorrow will be better.

A winner once again BC. Had never heard any of these before and the soloists were wonderful. I really delight in Saint-Saens' music. Bart Schneemann's transcription idea was inspired. I'd guess they could be tenor voice songs, but they would be very demanding. I think Sol G. could also play these on the 'cello, with Cho SJ accompanying. Thank you very much for this recording. The cheeky little sonata was gorgeous.

I remember finding this on CD shortly after it was released, in 1998, and it was a pleasant surprise. 11:54 (Aimons-nous) seemed a highlight, but I actually like the opener best now. Apart from many songs, Saint Saens wrote a lot of choral music. I'm not such a fan of either chanson/leider or choral works, but if each was transcribed to non-vocal instruments, there would be a lot more instrumental music of Saint Saens to enjoy. Somewhere I have a list of dates when each of these songs was first published. The first (rising of the moon) was 1853 and Aimons-nous was 1890. I can't remember others right now but I'm pretty sure the selection on this record are virtually all between those two dates (many are from the 1850s/60s; a few from the early 1870s; not sure if any were from the 1880s in this selection). Saint Saens was still writing songs in 1920/1.
