French 🇫🇷 and Norwegian 🇳🇴 soldiers swap meals-ready-to-eat rations 🍽

- Every army in NATO has its own field ration, commonly known as MREs (meals-ready-to-eat). While perhaps not the height of culinary expression, these rations give soldiers the calories they need to power through a hard day in the field. From Ally to Ally, their contents differ in small, interesting ways.
Join a Norwegian soldier and her French counterpart as they exchange rations during Exercise Brilliant Jump 22, held in Rena, Norway in March 2022. Brilliant Jump tested the NATO Response Force’s (NRF’s) ability to quickly deploy a combat-ready spearhead battalion on short notice. France leads the NRF in 2022, and their infantry brought plenty of hearty mountain rations to see them through the long, cold days.
Being part of the NRF means being ready 24/7, 365 days a year - and you can’t do that on an empty stomach.

Norwegians - how to survive the cold. French people - how to survive with style.
😄
Whoa Hey Now! The French can survive in the Alps.
Fun fact, a chief prepare the ration foods
@@chrismair8161omg!!! wow thats insane its not like norway is colder all year around than the alps
If Russian soldiers saw this, they’d be very jealous.
Oh, they might see those - on phones taken or stolen from Ukrainians. Except most of them don't speak English.
Not jealous, at all. They have no Vodka!!! 👻💯🗽
Think the Mixture of French and Norwegian
@@williamtsmith9668 hahaha of course russian soldiers are so drunk and useless
They got tacos tho
NATO should do more episodes of Ration Swap! I’d like to see more of what other allies think of other rations!
you read my mind, they are more entertaining than the short ones
there are youtube channels specializing in that! also a weird dude trying MRE's from the 60's or 40's : o
You know, he also tried a ration from the late 1800s, right?
@@luketimewalker Yeah, like Steve1989MREInfo!
Nato should make more videos. Russian trolls IRA are drowning us😅
As a mexican if anyone would've ever told me I would see a French soldier say their favorite dish was a beef taco from a Norwegian soldier's rations I would've said that sounded crazy XD
Norwegians actually love taco's, i mean what they put in them would probably be considered blasphemy in mexico but still they love em
Yes that is funny! 😊 It makes me think what a small world and how people everywhere are more alike than they are different.
@@nickvdb9196 There's literally aisles dedicated to tacos in Norway 😂
Mexican food made its way to Europe awhile ago generally well received. Cant speak for all Europeans but your food is much nicer than the USA ❤
Dyin' laughing...🤣🤣
I know that 20 years ago, when French army was, among other armies, in Afghanistan, soldiers exchanged 3 Américain rations for a French one.
l'époque où la France était influente auprès des autres... c'est trop dommage
Mdr à ce point là ?😂
That might be because the French rations are meant for a day. US rations are one meal.
Yeah i heard our MRE was very good! A soldier need good meal that's just essential to our eyes. The Norvegian was really great apparently i wish i could try them lol
Exactly
I saw a video of Ukrainian soldiers trying the French rations and you could see on their faces that they liked it very much.
French rations are amongst the best in the world, because they offer a very wide range of choice and different meals, all produced by one company, In France, and using mainly french products.
No wonder. Even the Americans used to trade their ration for the French ones.
If I recall, one French ration was worth 4-5 American ones
I bet rations from all the bigger Western nations taste quite good. They invest more money into developing good rations. Afaik the U.S have several types, and it probably will be less dull to eat that stuff for weeks.
Yes the rations are great. What I had was very very good.
@@la7dfa ehh wym by bigger? norway is pretty small. only 5 million people. it seems like they have better tasting rations than the American ones.
Norway and France; two beautiful countries with amazing cultures. Cheers from USA.
Merci ! 🖐️🇨🇵

Merci !
Cheer from France! 🤗
God bless America 🇺🇲💪
American Democracy and its Institutions...
A Norwegian and a Frenchman coming together to speak English. Makes you proud
Why?
You can't operate in NATO without English. When you win the big wars, dominate the world economically, and culturally for the past 300 years. Everybody else tends to learn your language.
@@filipuucorsu6636 cause they're speaking english
Ahaha in France we speak english very bad

As a Brit, I have to say it looks very smart but also comfortable
That jacket is nice
French chic, uh?
we're about to change for a sort of multicam
he's old school, he'll be replaced soon
No matter how many of these I see, I still can't get over how YOUNG they all are! I'm a retired USAF O-8 (Major General) and I'm 60 now. I served 32 years and I've swapped COUNTLESS MRE's with fellow officers from other countries. The more I tried, the more I realized that US MRE's are just a hair short of a war crime.
I was almost embarrassed to see the American MRE be given to the Italian in the video that they shared. Like that “pizza” was the worst possible exchange they could have ever done.
You are so spot on Sir I remember ham and chicken loaf desert was fruit cake😬😬😬😬😪😪
Are they THAT bad?
I'm 46. Beats me up thinking about them ever having to see action like the Ukrainians. When you see young people who haven't yet developed proper facial hair, in body bags. Then you tend to lose faith in humanity. And i have seen the same story since the Gulf war. It's depressing that we need them.
Is it true that the Vomelet MRE is made from E-3’s who spoke ill of their field rations to a CO and got the Big Chicken Dinner by an inpromptu court martial in the kitchen?
French rations are reputed to be among the best in the world.
Je peux vous rassurez que les rations Canadiennes sont également réputées et excellentes. Parmi les meilleurs au monde.
Are you french?
@@fabrizio.guidi64 a Canadian speaking in french, he's saying that Canadian's ration are also well rated

Like many other things, French always almost everything better
More of these! Really nice to highlight the thing that probably happens with all international training: the soldiers try out the different gear, weapon, food etc. of the other nations
Agreed!! Love the unity amongst the strong & different 30 allied nations 💪
NATOOO❤
Can remember that we always tried to trade a lot things between the troops not only rations. The german sport shirts were really fast turning articles. 🤣
Go Nato
In the military you actually find out many countries are using similar or comparable products : dehydrated rations tend to be about similar, AR15 variants are used by half the world, other rifles are just a little different like the FN SCAR, G-36... night vision and comm's are sometimes litterally the same, camo patterns getting more similar every year with always more multi-cam for general infantry, same with backpacks, ballistic protection...
I didn't even know NATO had a youtube channel lmao
So did i
Funny.. Until I read your comment nieder did I! 😂
Me neither
Right💀
Same
This French soldier is from the Franco German brigade. He's wearing both flags on his beret. That's also the only unit in the french army wearing the beret pulled to the right.
In the French Army yes but not in the French military as commandos Marine also wear it to the right
se ne sont pas les seules il y les commandos marins (SAS français ) qui le porte à droite comme les anglais
Yes he is from the BFA, few people know about this battallion. They are well equipped and trained as they benefit from both French and German materials. It's crazy to me that grandfather of these camarades were probably fighting eachother 80 years ago
@@josephgoulut3645 attention, les SAS français sont du 1er RPIMA. Les commandos marins sont issus des commandos de Lord Lovat, ils ont gardé les traditions Britanniques (et écossaise)
Such great times when French and Germans are working combined like this. Much better than in the past 😍
Love from the US🇺🇸 not many people here think of our Allies and friends, but we appreciate you and support you guys 🇳🇴🇫🇷🇺🇸
I'm with you completely, brother. I was just thinking the same thing.
Je suis content de lire ça. Votre nation a notre confiance et notre soutient. Bien à vous.
I love how the French soldier likes every item the Norwegian soldier gives him even more than the previous item. Like, first the curry fish, then the beef tortilla, then the cranberry bar.
The fish and curry, is maby the worst of the Norwegian meals.
@@trumpetscall8910 I think thats just a preference. Its one of my favorite meals. Goes well with a can of apple cider when camping in -20c.
just a well educated french guy.....
They both seem so nice! Thank you both for your service!
French ration is one of the best of the world if not the best because cuisine is the heart of french morale . Everything is about a meal even during the war 😅
So i guess they made progress since I serve in 1990, because it was....🙂

Both very kind and sympathic …
Both those rations look very good. Clearly the French love and respect their food.
Great posture from the soldier.

These ration swaps are fun to watch.
Seeing different countries come together to try different meals.
So polite, both of them.
It must be fun to discover the rations of another country and it's nice to share this to strengthen ties.
Where's the tactical baguette? 🥖
I remember a video where a soldier was talking about how the French rations were traded 1 for 2 US rations in Afghanistan...
what they didn't openly trade were the biers the French were allowed and the US soldiers were not... let's just say that the US soldiers embeded in French units were doubly happy. For the French MRE and for how they were considered adult and allowed to drink bier "within reason"...
bro, until 1956 french soldiers has red wine in military rations, like absolut chads.
In the French Navy, it's a tradition that they represent France around the world, so they have to treat guests with honor and attention
A friend of mine who worked on the Charles de Gaulle carrier told me that once, americans officers came on board and were offered a full diner on the ship, with wine and great food
They had to leave the next day because they ended drunk
@@LeComptoirDesLegendes Someone close to me may or may not have worked abroad the Charles de Gaulle. He/She said the chef had biquered about not being able to serve his "VIP" guests (diplomats, heads of state, etc.) fresh homemade candy and chocolates. So naturally they spent close to a million euros to get a water-cooled solid marble table (and all the stuff for cooling it) down all the decks to the cuisine. Because of course it was a matter of national pride. So your anedcote sounds 100% plausible.
Nutritious food supports the Fighter's performance in demanding tasks! 👍
British army ration packs are reasonable, but I do envy the French ration packs. They have style - ! 😅

I liked this video. It is fun watching people from different countries sharing their mre's.
Such a great video. Absoloutely love their shared and oveerall assessment of the meals.
Norwegians have the benefit of knowing the cuisine for cold climates, while the French have the benefit of being French cuisine overall.
There is no such cuisine for cold climates. You eat fish in both extremely cold and extremely hot countries. You boil, cook and fry food all around the globe. And since France's own Bocuse d'Or was first held in 1987, Norway has won five gold, four silver, and four bronze medals in the international competition. Norway, together with France, is the country with the most international Bocuse d'Or awards. Norway historically didn't have access to exciting herbs and spices found in warmer climates, hence the traditional Norwegian cuisine is rather bland. But something Norwegians are amazing at is perfecting other countries' cuisines. Which is exactly why you find world class restaurants in Oslo serving incredible food.
While russian having expired food 20 years old .
🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂nice one bro but they don't even have expired food they are stealing food from the houses of illegally occupied territories
Did you hear that they found a zoo in Ukraine, and were killing and eating the animals? Well, if you're starving...

My neighbor is retired US Army officer who served in Afg. with the French. She said the French brought crates of cheese and wine and ate the best out if the coalition. US military bans alcohol so they were envious of the French.

Great video!
In Iraq first war, everybody wanted French rations.
They're so nice to each other.

AS a french national I put a 20 out of then for the english pronunciation of the french soldier, never heard a french with such good english.
Il est dans la brigade franco allemande donc il doit travailler uniquement en anglais je pense, ce qui explique son très bon niveau d'anglais
Gloire à vous braves soldats!

@NATO I'm registered Blind and so cannot serve. I used ration packs during COVID and it was really interesting. Thanks to all you NATO lads and lasses for your work 💖🙂
I am very impressed with their command of the English language.
English is almost an "official language" in Norway to the point that Norwegian will eventually be like Irish in Ireland, i.e. a second language that used to be the mother tongue of the past.
As for the French soldier, he certainly had intensive English lessons at the army since he's part of a NATO unit.
I always thought (hoped) the french MREs had wine in them 😁
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Actually, it was the case in the past.... but they removed it for obvious reason x)
In the past they had wine or strong alcohol like eau de vie. And cigarette (gauloise caporal)
They had, but they removed it. On Easter i remember we had a christmas one with a mignonette of Champagne. Those who don't drink were trading it with other things. Some guy end up completely drunk. x)
I've sampled many different combat rations from many countries. I'm not in the military, I just think it's interesting to see what they have going on. By far, the French ration (RCIR) is the best. Things like pate, cheese, duck sausage. Most things in the French ration are actually enjoyable.
American MREs often get a bad reputation, but most I've tried aren't "bad"...they're just usually bland but they've gotten better over the years.
Please do more of these videos!
I'm glad so many improvements have been made with the MREs from back in the 70s. I would always get "the squirts" (diarrhea) from American MREs, so I would stock my pack with Jerke, crackers, sunflower seeds, trail mix & energy bars before going on exercises.
Oh, we still have those in tins as emergency rations. Nicknamed "leftovers of exploded personnel" and older than most of the soldiers eating them with tortured looks on their faces. It comes in either as a dried brown lump or a disgusting brown water slop, and it comes out the same way it came in. Thank God 99% of the time you’re eating proper MRE’s.
What pleasant young people!
Great video, great series that's a little thing but i think that's great to see allies "in action" ;)
The French army ration is easily the holy grail of rations. Its basically just shelf stable civilian food.
I'm always interested in the difference in decisionmaking regarding single-meal rations versus 24-hour rations.
No snails?
And no frogs either... Sorry to be some sort of a mythbuster...
Unfortunately not, but sometimes you can have wine. Ok, I'm joking...
