Man this video saved me money today!! My engine was turning on as normal but when I would shift, the boat wouldn’t move.i found that the nut came off and the rod had just disconnected from the little shift mechanism. I searched everywhere for a resolution then I found this jewel of a video. Much appreciated from Saint Augustine, FL, USA.
Super helpful video. The info you provided helped me to rig my own kicker motor - saved myself $1000, and really no one is going to take the care with your boat like you would. Thank you!!
I'm about to replace the cables on a boat I bought today. The seller included them in the sale so I'm hoping this process is virtually the same in mine. This video is a good step by step in the process.
Hi. It should be roughly the same. Only thing that can differ is the way it’s fixed to the controls and motor but it should still be a similar install. Just remember to have the controller leaver in the internal position before connecting to the motor.
When setting up the cable length for the shift cable, wouldn't you want the selector in the N position? (like how it shows in your thumbnail) I noticed you had it all the way back when installing the cable -- Did you have the control box set to reverse? I'm going to be replacing cables this weekend and I assumed I would keep the cables in the neutral position for cable installation. Excellent video explaining how the connections work, exactly what I was looking for.
a great tutorial thanks, BUT WAIT, I HAVE A PROBLEM TO SOLVE and am looking for feedback. when I am in the water and I trow it into forward will bog down and in many cases stall. when I'm real gentle and slow I can get it to go forward and it runs great once it is moving. when it is out of the water all controls work great. Can it be a bad adjustment in the cables. they don't seem to be constricted.
How do you know the correct position of the motor before you attach the cables? I noticed you said the motor was in neutral both on th remote and motor. How to tell which position is neutral on the motor??
Thanks for this I just brought me a boat and it doesn't have the throttle lever and cables either just one question where did you buy the cables and do you know where I can find a lever for it
I got the cables from Hawke’s bay marine. They had to order them from America though for my motor. The other place you can try would be firmance marine or boating outdoors depending on the make of motor you have.
Hi, I put a Johnson throttle cable 97.5cm but the cable became separated AT CRIMP UPON FIRST USE AFTER INSTALLATION, why did this happen and can it be fixed? your help is so appreciated, thanks Liz.
Great video. You help solve a question I had with how the connector pieces go back together. I took the motor off for a couple months an had forgot how the gear selector when back on corectly.
Nice one bro. Actually so cool to know a video I made helped someone lol. Amazing how no matter what question you need the answer to you’ll find it somewhere on RUclips. Cheers for watching and taking the time to comment.
Very educational. Looks like it’s a Mercury EFI 200 hp. I have a 200 hp 1994 Pro Max EFI and my throttle is not holding constant rev. It slowly reduces it unless I keep my hand on the shifter. Any idea what could be the issue? Many thanks Jonas from the US.
Hi. mine was doing the same thing. on top of the controls mine has a round dial that is used to tighten or lossen the throttle leaver. you will have to play around with that to het the sensitivity adjusted to your needs.
Hi ShermGerm. Here is a link to the part numbers. It’s just called a washer but on this link you will find the part number. It is part 38 on this diagram and part number 12-35462 here is the link. Hope it helped. www.perfprotech.com/mercury-marine-parts-catalog/throttle-lever-and-shift-shaft/assembly/1678/80?model=128
Thanks for the video. I have done all that today after watching this tutorial. My new throttle box and cables, but it's very stiff and I can't shift throttle forward. Can anyone help? I've double and triple checked it all and everything is looking okay.??
Quick question! I have a 40hp Mercury engine and this video was very informative! I have my fuel line, throttle & gear lines already. But I don't have my battery hook up yet and quite new to this so I'm a little lost. Just need to know what I need for this. Can send pictures of my controls and engine if needed! Cheers for any advice!
fraser mcguffin The battery normally has 2 separate cables or 1 cable with 2 cores normally black and Red running directly from Engen starter motor to the battery. the battery does not run through the controls
MPC007_EXP nope many different varieties they mostly work in the same basic way but might look a bit different or have a different way of attaching. You’ll have to take your motors make and model to a dealer in order to get the correct one for your setup.
Hi men great work i'm from Argentina and i want to do the same work to my mercury elo 40 hp two stroke , is similar or is totally difrent?? Sorry for my english mate i do my best
All good mate I appreciate your comment. The concept should be the same there might just be a few minor differences with your Motor but it should still have 1 a throttle leaver and 2 a gear selector leaver on the motor. If your motor has the steering arm and throttle on the motor and not a proper steering wheel and controll box it will be a little more comlecated than just replacing cables.
@@tjsutton5757 Probably not because where will the access cable go? You could leave it coiled up somewhere as long as it doesn't have sharp bends in it but it would wear a lot faster and be a lot harder to push the control leaver into gear because of the extra friction.
This means your motor refs is too high when in Nutral position extend throttle cable little bits at a time in order to lower your engen refs then grinding should stop.
You have to make sure Gear selector arm on motor is in the neutral position and your control is in neutral position. then install cable and adjust length to fit. Also ensure that you haven’t mixed the position of the throttle and shifter cables up on the controls
With so many people passing through. It Would be pretty cool to know where y’all from let me know down here.

Reach down and turn the prop by hand. It will spin in N and lock in F and R
I installed new one but the throttle cable is still stiff. Any ideas?
Is there a spec for the shifter cable forward neural or Reverse Measurement thank you

How do I install the shift cable on a silent six
Crystal Dye you don’t. Take it to the shop.
Are these cables universal, do they work with all major outboard brands?
MPC007_EXP nope many different varieties they mostly work in the same basic way but might look a bit different or have a different way of attaching. You’ll have to take your motors make and model to a dealer in order to get the correct one for your setup.
