I worked for a HomeGoods store that had an early morning meeting one time, and bought fancy red velvet cupcakes for everyone. So later in the day they sent everyone on my shift home early enough to cover the exact amount of the fancy red velvet cupcakes.

Nope. Sorry. They actually REQUIRED to pay you or give you comp time. If not, report them to the Labor Board. I know lots of companies that try and pull this crap. I had a employer who tired this - had me attending meetings for her and not paying me. Later on, she got reported to the labor board in my state and had pay every employee she did this too their back pay AND got fined.

Honestly as manger I would just gove OT and if they were salary document the verbal.
That or just send an email with the info if that would work.

I honestly haven't seen even one of these that makes any sense. She had no right to leave early (taking comp time) without asking her manager first unless there was an understanding that OT was not allowed. EVERY work experience I have had when asked to come in early or stay late, it was either OT or comp time, no exceptions. NEVER! So the proper thing to do would be to hash it out if with her manager if she didn't get OT for the extra half hour.

I feel like all of the videos from Veronica depict strictly American problems. I have never even heard of any of that shit.

You are sadly right. A lot of these problems are uniquely American problems.Wage theft is a really big problem in America.

@flarigrar7114 having said that, a senior dev in US makes like 160k/year. In Europe you have fewer expenses (free education, no post-university debt, cheaper housing, no health insurance etc, although food in eurozone costs around the same) but a senior dev does not make more than 80k/year

Nope, these are corpo problems, not unique to america, had a company who expected us to be in 15 early to be ready for shift, but demanded we didn't down tools until shift end, it ended up with half the staff hiding for the last 30 minutes of service

No, the person who called a meeting at that time and thought that everyone else at the meeting wouldn’t resent being there is not a team player. It’s easy to follow a path regularly trodden but if it’s the wrong path it can be challenged and changed. Just as those sycophants following Trump blindly and believing everything he says despite the evidence of fraud, evidence of corruption. If he says it’s not, they go with it. It’s ridiculous.
If your contract says 8 hour day then they pay for an 8 hour day. You can be a team player if you want in that 8 hour day. Outside of it, your time. It’s too one sided and scaring people into working for free just to keep their job is unacceptable, demoralising, assuming stupidity and incompetent financial planning.

Of course, but no employer I have ever worked for (and I'm 60) has ever asked me to. Its either OT or comp time usually stated in advance. Like if for budgetary reasons they know they can afford OT, they will tell you staying late to help a customer is at your own discretion but you will have to take comp time.
