The bit had a pyramid shaped tip & it walked all over the place. Made it very difficult to start holes. Of course the easiest way I found - was to make 3 cuts (6 pieces of pie), about 1/2" off center with a chainsaw. It leaves a small triangle in the center that burns off quickly.

I don't quite follow this. What is the purpose of the spiral past the first inch? My grandfather was a carpenter and an upholsterer and had some old tools laying around. If you get an actual old school hand drill for wood working they have a pointy nose and a flat sharp knife for the first inch or less. They are not rounded and they are very sharp. Once you dug out the material the rest of the drill bit seems like a waste. I see that it may be helpful in clearing the material but as far as cutting goes it seems useless.
