Shaping my first twin fin surfboard....

- In this video I catch up with The Board Lab to chat about surfboards, surfing, shaping, glassing and a whole bunch more. I'm thrown into the deep end when resident shaper, Alex Crews of ACSOD throws me in the deep end of the shaping bay after tweaking his Two Fangs design (from our twin fin series).
Learning from the guys at The Board Lab has been an awesome experience and I can't wait to give a fully hand shaped board a crack one day! Dude 9:31 made me uncomfortable 😅 Waxing the fresh new blade flat on rough pavement like that 😖
I've hand shaped my own boards for 30+ years. If I had access to a CNC I'd use it and never look back. Great video🙌
I shaped my own boards. Have done so for the last 30+ years. Do everything shaping glassing sanding, even foil my own fins. Love the entire process. It’s difficult to master and very easy to stuff up. Give hand shaping a go Kale it’s way more difficult then you think. Much respect to the time and effort the guys put into every step. Great video. Oh and btw I ride mostly twin fins and quads. Can’t tell you how important fin placement is on Twins. Great to see Wayne O from the Glass Lab in this video. Absolute champion. Cheers
I really want to shape my own as well. Even if they underperform I can say I shaped it myself.
Kale smashing it surfing that really well. What a great opportunity 😀
Love ya work guys...Great Quality at ACSOD, Cheers
Rad Kale, and mint you have a place like the board lab to work with. I’ve been on roughly same obsession timeline as you but learning w/a pure analog shaper. Pros/cons aside, your experience is helping me see things I can’t in pure analog. One thing I do get is same guy does it all so I see it all and communication is different. Anyway, IMO, regardless of how you get it done, highly recommended for anyone who can, at least participate in shaping 1 board, whatever mode, that you will ride. This will change your surf life friends, and you might get obsessed like 🥬😆💰🤘🏽 nice one kale…thanks for doing these🤙🏼
I do recall suggesting you give this a go. I not sure if that made any difference but Good onya. 👍👍
With the videos you make kale, you make my day. Have a good one.
Board looks sick 🤙🏻
Good for you, get 'er done! On the handshape that is
Great expose of shaping… it really is an art form or a science… or both! Sometimes serendipity works it’s magic. Next time one grumbles over the cost, I remember the six summers it took to shape six boards until a magic one.
Very cool video Kale, thanks for making content like this, love seeing how the pros do it. Making boards from start to finish as a backyard shaper is an enjoyable and additive hobby but I would kill to have that CNC machine to get the rough shape done. Each board I shape I try something new to see if it suits me. Learn, Shape, Surf, Repeat :)
Go ahead Kale! Been wanting to do this myself but too many back surgeries in the last 5 years. Keep up the good work mate! Yew🤙 G⭐
Yoooo🔥🔥dw ur not the only surf nerd mate
Sweet video.
Did you increase tail rocker too?
Where were you surfing?
Hi Kale! Have you rode the Happy Everyday yet? Love to hear your opinion!
Do you know Adam Wessel? He is the owner of the board lab and I’m Besties with his daughter, Vada.
A lot a surfers are aggressive and rude to kooks but you are the polar opposite and love teaching them how to surf. Thanks
Sometimes frustration with breaches of etiquette can be interpreted as aggression or rudeness - I don’t think there are many surfers who want to be angry in the water but if they’ve waited twenty minutes for a wave that gets ruined by someone in the way or dropping in etc then it can be naturally frustrating. That’s the idea with this content - to minimise negative interactions by helping everybody to become informed
Mate!! Anothing entertaining video. If you had a line of surfboards designed for intermediate surfers, that are user friendly you would kill it man. It's hard to relate to surfboards that are designed for a pro surfer but i can see myself relating to a surfboard that you designed more easily.
Pros get a batch of 10 and keep two maybe. Even 10 with same dims ride different for each surfer
Dare I ask where you surfed in SA? I head over from Vicco a couple of times a year but don’t have enough time to go hunting for the best spots 😬. Thanks Kale.
When is the Hossegor, France video coming Kale?!?!?
Jump onto my page and have a look at all the hand shaping vids I’ve got for some inspiration mate. It’s a process that’s for sure. The guys at the boardlab know their stuff. Sick vid!
7:35 Hahahaha, a popular question on reddit in the r/surfing sub is what should my "daily driver" be. Then I see on the small days everyone just bobbing around in the water.
i just bought a twin but i'm unsure what twin fins to go with it. i bought a pair from an online surf/ski store and they are huge. they were way bigger than my thruster fins.
They normally are from my knowledge
Thanks Kale. How did you set the "cant" on the fins.
I believe that FCS fin boxes come with pre-set fin cants so the boxes go in flat but the slots for fins are canted already. With futures you have to set it yourself. Could be wrong, definitely check out Greenlight surf for info.
@@alexmoskowitz4025 FCS, the cant is built into the finbox. For futures, the cant is built into the fins. For either, box installation is conventionally done using a router template setup.
popping the fins and then waxing your brand new board with the fins down on bare concrete. Unreal...I actually cringed.
Yep...me to...WTF Kale was that drrrrrr 😖. Never ever do that. Well don't leave it in the edit.
I'd like to hear a response from Kale...pretty dumb basic no no
Kale didn’t say broccoli for a free grip…
love the vids Kale. learning a lot as a land locked surfer. so, if I go to south Aus I will find waves like you ride here with only 6 people out???
FCS is the beta max of fin systems
hi
wheres the break
You reckon his gonna diclose the break on here ? Big man
At least you have legit reason to wear mask )))
You worked with a shaper to create a custom board and touched it a few times in the process.
Not exactly shaping a board...
jealous are we big man
@@blazedfx5165 haha not at all, I enjoyed the video.
The title is simply not true..
Welcome to RUclips? Hand shaped next time
(Also, more than touched a few times - you make or break a board during that stage)
I don’t think you can be in the business of making surfboards and shape them all by hand. It isn’t possible to produce the volume necessary to make a living. But I could be wrong.
As helpful as a work experience kid 😅
😂
These boards are designed not hand shaped, lets call it what it is.
Dont forget the pollution. ☠️
If you may say so yourself. I used to watch your videos. I haven’t watched this one but just noting you are getting more and more obnoxious (maybe you are just Australian) and I am less and less likely to actually watch one of your videos.
Hey there! I notice you’ve commented this sentiment several times over the past year but still keep returning to watch videos. I relinquish my power over you and I hope you get to feel validated one day without having to upchuck your whining online behind a keyboard 🙏🏽🙏🏽
@@KalesBroccoli ha ha, no worries! RUclips keeps putting them on my feed. I guess I can block them. I guess I used to really enjoy your videos before you got into selling boards and whatever you were sponsored by. Anyway, thanks for the feedback. I guess I thought you might be genuinely interested in what people thought about your videos.
