I'm The Only One In The Room In A Wheelchair

I often look around, and see no one else in a wheelchair. No one. It is isolating and lonely.

Excellent and valid points you’ve raised, as always! 👍🏼 And thanks for sharing not just the issues, but also how those issues can make you and other wheelchair users feel. I have to use a wheelchair situationally, and whilst it increases mobility and accessibility to people and places, I have become aware of the same feelings you’ve expressed.

It's a tough one. The thing that helps me be a part of the world is also the thing that sets me apart. The thing that allows me to be included is also the thing that makes me feel like I'm on the outside. It is a complicated relationship.

I'd walk by you and I like to help others in stores if I can.
And, sometimes I'm goofing around walking like a zombie arms raised.
Or sometimes if I'm shopping in a store I pretend I'm speeding around like a race car.
Then, people go across my path I make the car brake sound.

Totally understand that I've been in a shop and my eye level has literally been at peoples groins ... if we lived closer i swear i would race you ... I've been the only one too and it sucks sending you big hugs

I'm so thankful that my wheelchair has an elevation feature, so if I'm in a conversation I can at least get up to other people's level. Otherwise they have to do that squat-down thing that makes me feel like I'm four years old and it's humiliating 🙃

@@warninghonestyahead yeah the crouch squat thing is horrible i am looking at getting a new wheelchair and hopefully it will be higher
