    I am working and living in Belgium past many years! Before that I did my studies in The Netherlands. Very true, the Dutch people are direct and on the face with their opinion about you, positive or negative. Whereas here in Belgium most of the time we are bit more diplomatic in saying things. Housing is a big problem all over Europe wherever there are international students. Especially Amsterdam, Rotterdam etc is so expensive and scarce to rent a small house. Many house owners hesitate to rent it to Indian or other south Asian people, because of our cooking habits, thus smelling curry and spices everywhere from our houses to our clothes! I light candles while cooking, keep my clothes away from cooking is done...keep windows open few times daily. Here also, getting to see a specialist doctor sometimes takes weeks or two months. General practitioners, sometimes a day after. But most of Belgians do not go to a doctor so easy. If they are sick; they just take rest and eat and drink accordingly and heal themselves. We Indians have a habit to run to a doctor for all small health issues. Cheers

    The delay to get a doctor appointment surprises me, having lived in the Netherlands for 4 years. When I got a cold, I was able to get an appointment for the next day and when I had a toothache, I was lucky and had an appointment within a couple of hours (otherwise it may also have been 1-3 days, maybe). In Germany (definitely there and I think in the Netherlands too), GP's have "Sprechstunden" (consultation hours) in the morning when people can come in without appointments - you just have to wait your turn.
    While I'm not saying you're lying, I do think you would get MUCH faster appointments if you just personally go to the doctor as soon as they open instead of calling (especially with the language barrier, even though most Dutch people speak English as well), as you may be lucky and get accepted immediately, you may be more informed about consultation hours if you missed them that day, and you express your urgency better. Given the cultural difference of being direct, I think the call to make an appointment did not convey the urgency, resulting in a later appointment.
    Also, try asking about open consultation hours next time. Maybe they also have that.

    From an expert by experience who studied in Delft, let's put it this way: If the local people could not find a home for themselves in the Netherlands, how do you think you will find a place to live as a student here? Futhermore the language is Dutch, not English as you might know.

  • @planet2020
    @planet2020 6 месяцев назад +15

    Exactly the same applies the other way around. When a Dutch person goes to live/work in India, he/she also has to learn the language, look for housing and a job and he/she is also seen as a foreigner and everything will be advertised as more expensive. Everything has its pros and cons and the grass is not greener elsewhere. As you know the housing has become unaffordable for ordinary Dutch people due to the arrival of many expats, not only from India. The waiting period for affordable housing is 20 years or more. As a result, Dutch young adults continue to live with their parents for much longer and are unable to start a family. If you are unlucky in your relationship, you can even end up on the street if you have no parents or no one to fall back on. There are even Dutch people who sleep/live in their car and still work and pay taxes. Asylum seekers who have a residence permit have priority for social housing and ordinary Dutch people can join the back of the queue. There is a lot of poverty, there are food banks and there is also a lot of misery in the Netherlands. and yes, the waiting lists in healthcare apply to all Dutch people. When I hear you talk so positively about India, I wonder why you are still here, you are better off in India. Things are getting better in India. Just think about it carefully. 🙏🏼

      People living on the streets are everywhere in all big cities in Europe, including Luxembourg one of the richest countries in the EU. Many of these are illegal immigrants on the way to the UK or just end up here or there in Europe. Yes, there are natives in the Netherlands who have severe financial difficulties, counting every cents to spend till the end of the month. But there is a good social security system here for all citizens ( I live in Belgium), which helps. Certain people choose to live on streets even when they are offered help from volunteers.

    Best of luck with your channel? I'm assuming you're not coming from one of the 4 big cities in India? It has been normal for decades to make appointment with anyone you want to visit family or friends in the big cities. It's rude to just drop in. That's not different than in The Netherlands it seems.

    Very nice and interesting video. I always enjoy hearing Indian language, it sounds like music to me. (But I'm glad there are subtitles) I didn't know that healthcare is so advanced and good in India, no waiting times and appointments with specialists within hours or days. Wow, development is fast there. But if there is urgency, you can see a doctor with an emergency procedure. My wife had the same thing with her eye and she was able to visit a few hours later. (We live in Switzerland, maybe it's easier for tourists who don't have a GP in the Netherlands). It's always a challenge when you live in a (totally) different culture to find your way around, luckily you both speak English. That's also the beauty of it. You cannot judge the Netherlands only as an Indian, but if you spend a few years there, you will also look at India differently. Perspectives will widen and it will enrich your life. Go and enjoy the local culture, enjoy the local festivities (there are many in the south) like carnival. I hope you will find your day. If you get to know Dutch people in person, they are very open, very interested in other cultures. In Amsterdam or Rotterdam, it should be easy to find Indian restaurants and also markets where you can find more Indian (and spicy ;) ) food. It is also interesting to discover European cuisine, especially in Belgium or France, you have a really sophisticated, high-quality food culture. Enjoy the differences. I enjoy Indian restaurants, but I always tell the cook, not too spicy :). Weather is always an important issue, but personally I prefer to enjoy the fresh air on the Dutch coast rather than the pollution of many Indian enourmes cities. In rural areas, of course, things can be much better, but I suppose you don't have the good infrastructure there in terms of healthcare and jobs? Have a nice day!

      Health care in India is not at all a problem, except in remote areas, medical assistance always available from small towns to larger cities that too with budget friendly expenditure. Now a days, India emerged as a destination for sophisticated and specialised medical care for so many countries, hope you admire 🙏

      That's a great comment! I've been learning about the Netherlands, especially after seeing your awesome Olympics campaigns in hockey and track. Visiting the Netherlands is at the top of my travel list, and I really like the Dutch language. I'm trying to find good online resources to learn it but haven't had much luck so far. In India, while we can get doctor appointments easily, government hospitals have long queues, so many people go to private ones for faster service. It's always nice to hear about different cultures, it's really heartwarming! Good day mate.
      P.S: We Indians often have a relaxed attitude towards time, haha

    • @jasperkok8745
      @jasperkok8745 4 месяца назад +1

      As a Dutchman I cannot compare our healthcare system to that of India, because I’ve never been there. But I find a one-week waiting time at a GP for an eye infection quite excessive; I’m not accusing you of lying, but I do find it hard to believe you really had to wait that long. Perhaps you were just being too kind and didn’t push enough to get the message across that it was (at least somewhat) urgent. It’s true that you probably won’t get an appointment for the same day, but in emergency situations you can, and I think this would qualify as an urgent situation (not an emergency) and I would expect to be seen in a few days. Referrals to hospital, either for seeing a specialist or for more advanced diagnostic procedures that a GP cannot provide may indeed take longer, but here, too, the more urgent the situation appears to be, the sooner you will get an appointment.
