Funny all these comments about not racialising the history, they certainly racialised things back then. The soldiers of the West Indies Regiment weren't even allowed to fight in combat due to racism.

Forgive me if I’m short on details, it was 40 years ago and I slept through most history lessons.
But I remember watching a documentary in school and there was this old soldier who was in the trenches during the great war. He was saying how his squad were all suffering in the trenches, trench foot and the like. Some gruesome stuff. And how all of his requests for resupply were going unanswered.
Then one day, out of the blue, his squad received a complete resupply including new weapons and completely new uniforms. With the resupply were orders instructing that all equipment and uniforms should be issued at once and that nothing should be held back in stores.
The next day a government photographer came up the trenches to take pictures of him and his men, in their new gear.
The day after that, he got orders that due to an oversight, all that new equipment and uniforms should be collected and returned to base.
We went for the first time 2 years ago to visit his grave. I'm not gobs put with this blm Marxist bullshit that wants to turn our country into the same thing that would've happened if Hitler had won. I would argue his inference is incorect, it is not that they are ignorant, but that instead they are actively attempting to change the way people view a thing. I don't think the presenter is trying to say that literally no one knew that black soldiers fought in ww1 and like all the photos and records of them were burned or something.
The fact is the contribution of non white soldiers to the British war effort isn't part of the popular narrative. Most people don't know about it unless they've got a specific interest in ww1 and research it themselves, or choose history at gcse (assuming they'll end up doing a course on ww1 in gcse).
When you look past the exaggerations and a few misinformed things said by the young people, all this is about is showing that British people of colour were part of British history in ways most people are unaware of, to make them more accepted and intergrated in our culture. I see no problem with that.

This documentary tries to appeal to a wide audience to spread the word as much as possible, but for most people history is boring. To keep things interesting certain things are exaggerated, and instead of having a big brain professor talking at you the whole time in a monotone voice, they bring in young people of colour and ask them what narrative they've been told of the Great War.
They're not trying to con anyone. Everyone here is getting hung up on how this documentary is being presented, but if you look past that the stuff they're saying is not wrong. The only political agenda here is making people of colour more accepted in our culture and explaining that people back in the day were racist.
When I was in history class, nobody seemed intrested, my class was always loud and obnoxious. These people don't know their history because they were the ones passing notes and neglecting homework.

I don't find the statement offensive in and of itself, it is the intent that I find objectionable.
For example, since the opening of the Soviet archives views on WWII have had to be re-evaluated in the light of new evidence.
Essentially you could say that the history of WWII has been more accurately rewritten.
I just don't think they mean "history should be re-evaluated as new evidence is found", they mean "history should be rewritten to fit out political agenda".

They claim the British empire was hell on earth, so explain how these troops VOLUNTEERED to join up and fight in Europe for the same people who were oppressing them ?
Well while the troops didn't particularly like the Empire, joining the army was the best way to earn money at that time because nobody had a lot of money. In the case of Indian troops in WW1, they were promised an independent India, which was quite alluring especially considering there had been a lot of revolts in the 19th century.
Well exactly. There are records of Maori letters and speeches demanding the right to fight alongside the rest of the Imperial troops to show they were loyal subjects of Queen Victoria, and fierce warriors. Sikhs, Caribbeans and others also felt pride and loyalty to the Crown and volunteered. Surely they wouldn't have felt that way if everything had been so awful?

I think I see the problem here.
In fairness when I was at school they covered very little of the overall war. The stuff we went over was almost exclusively European with a dash of American. Most of what I know about the second world war is me actually reading about it in my own time. So there is a probably a huge variation in what people learn about the war and why this has even turned into a topic of discussion.

I basically said my school covered very little of the war, pretty much limited to the Battle of Britain, Evacuees and the Holocaust, with a little bit of Hitler's rise to power. I was replying to the above comment and suggesting that poor education in this area might lead to some major ignorance of the war overall. Sure it might be in a textbook but if the class isn't covering it then what reason would most have to find it? I don't really get the point you're trying to make.

It was about the thinking of only Europe, America and maybe Russia when you hear World War 2. I was merely saying I can see how there would be massive gaps in knowledge based on my own experience of historical education, which was focused almost entirely on Europe and America. That being said my school was under Ofsted special measures for most of the time I was there so that should give you an indicator of the quality of education people were receiving.
The original mission statement of the BBC has been lost to time. Educate, entertain and inform use to be the mantra. Now, lindoctrinate, bore and misinform has replaced it.

The Sikhs become loyal to Britain due to many reasons and one of them is the fact that there is no united South Asian identity no matter how much some Hindu nationalists try to claim. Britain recruited Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs in South Asia usually from tribes/peoples who were accustomed to fighting and were generally land owning class. The only people who I can think of only being recruited for their fighting capabilities are definitely the Gurkhas.

In my school (Im in America) learned what the US did to contribute an our perspective, then we see the war as a whole and saw what little we did but what it served as a whole.

Someone that will take the time to mentor an individual and teach them the basics of a civilised society such as respect and decency. It seems that weve lost that over the years. In a nuclear family that would be the role of the father however in the UK 48% of kids are being raised in broken families perhaps that is where we've gone wrong. The role of fathers has been overlooked and underestimated due to the encroachment of the welfare state. Let's face it alot of kids nowadays are raised by the state and not their parents.
At my previous job we had a part-time intern who was in university at the time. She asked me how to address and stamp an envelope she'd been asked to send a client. I was gobsmacked and just stood a moment, before showing her how, and then directing her to the magical knowledge box on her desk.

I took IGCSE History 1876-1945 and I despise seeing people making history into a contemporary form of racism.
I’m maori so know a little bit about maori culture. Keeping defeated enemies heads and preserving them is rather important in pre Colonial maori culture. I would bet there would be at least one maori soldier in the maori pioneer battalion that kept this tradition during ww1. I’m not sure about other non white cultures but yeah that pamphlet just sounded like a factual account of a Maori at war to me.

I'm getting a little tired of the "I wasn't taught this in school" comment. Many people seem to believe that high schools should teach them everything they will ever need in the space of 4 or 5 years. They never think that maybe they should pick up a book after they have left school, that is unless it's 50 Shades or Grey or some other trash.

And British history is one of those things I just don't think can be taught properly in school. There's too much of it. You're too young to retain the early stuff properly or appreciate its meaning and significance, so you end up forgetting half of it or misremembering. There are some subjects it's better to study as an adult.
Agreed. I wasn’t taught about much of anything about Bronze Age history, classical history, the Dark Age, or even much about the high Middle Ages. But I loved history and one day decided to ask my mom to buy me a book on Roman warfare, and I started taking it to school with me just because I thought it was cool. I didn’t get mad at my history teacher for focusing on American presidents, as if he was robbing me of other studying opportunities. If someone really wants to learn about their history, then they need to put in some effort.
It would be a shame if people started "peacefully protesting" legacy media.

Just found your channel while surfing RUclips. I live in the US but You earned a subscriber. I am very interested in the First and Second World War. My Great Grandfather and his three brothers all served in the Second World War and amazingly they all came home. One of them was a Pilot and was shot down, one was in Europe fighting the Germans, and one was a Tank driver and had his tank blown up but he made it out. My Great Grandfather was the only one not on the frontlines, he was a Prison Guard for a POW camp. I never met my Grand Uncles, but I can be damn sure they didn’t boast about this stuff. They spoke about their experiences and passed on the stories to my Grandfather, their closest living relative. Please keep making videos exposing this hypocrisy by the Mainstream Media.

As a person from a member country of the commonwealth, we were totally taught about the colonial armies that helped Britain. As if this was not mentioned in schools. That seems ridiculous.

When I was in the army they make a big deal of remembrance day, obviously. Not once during any of the 5 years I spent attending these did the officers or padres speaking on behalf of the fallen, specify race, gender or sexuality.
When I was in training we had many guys from our previous colonies, Ghana, Kenya etc. we had more racism between them than we did from White > Black. There is a strong sense of belonging in Africa, if you are from Ghana you hang around with Ghanaians, Kenyan, with Kenyans, it's just how they saw things. We didn't crap on them for that, and they didn't crap on each other either, as long as they kept to themselves for the most part.
The reason the Caribbean regiments were not on the PEACE parade was because 2 weeks before they rioted, charged with mutiny and excluded, fact.

Like, I’m sorry that the Brandenburg concertos were composed by white Bach instead of kunta kinte but we’re not going to study African tribal chants that had no impact on world music when we can study the Brandenburg concertos which did.
