Video is filmed in Lapland, northern Finland. Tuomas wrote this as a request for the sun eclipse in Europe in 1999 from the German record label, he didn't like the idea, but he wrote one of the most memorable Nightwish song ever.

  • @Evil_Peter

This is a song that I think really hits the essence of who Tarja is and what she brought to the band. It focuses a lot on the warm and deep quality of her voice, moving slowly and roundly through the lyrics to create something majestic. It's not something that's extremely hard to sing technically but it's all in how it marries with Tarja's voice that creates the unique feel.
It's pretty clearly contrasted with the second era of the band with Anette, whom I think more represents a lighter and more agile vocal style, which brings songs like Amaranth that I don't think were likely to have been written before. Then with Floor I find it harder to really nail down one essence as it's rather her versatility that makes the biggest change for the band. It's even more marvelous how much great music Tuoumas has made with one band but with three different singers, and in the end it all still feels like that one band.

I personally think that this is one of the best guitar solos within Nightwish's catalog, alongside Ghost Love Score. Whilst simple, they capture the raw emotion of the songs. Chase has said many times over that Emppu plays in service to the songs rather than to show off. Emppu is a very capable musician, but beyond that, it shows maturity that he puts the feelings of a song over flaunting talent.
In addition, I will say that I personally prefer the 2005 re-recording of this song. I feel like it has a more refined tone and tighter instrumentation. I also like it's accompanied music video. Whilst this video showcases Finland's beautiful landscapes, I love the newer video's more cinematic vibe that is subtle but still tugs at the heart.

The first Nightwish song i've herd, without even knowing the band's name. It was even used on tv commercials back in the day in Greece!
Tarja was very young and still in the process of transformation to the 2005 diva we mostly have in our minds.
    Can't wait for this reaction!

oooh i'm so glad you get to this song, as it's one of my (many) favorite songs by them. i'm also happy you chose the version sang by Tarja, as i personaly like this version a little more over Floor's version. it's one of only a few songs that i think her voice suits the song better than Floor. this is just my personal opinion, i don't want to start a war here, we all know that both Tarja, Annette and Floor are amazing :D

❤❤❤ A personal top ten Nightwish for me. I hope you also check out the 2005 music video version, and the live versions from End of an Era (Tarja) and at Tampere (Floor). For a couple years, before I started getting their albums, Sleeping Sun was entirely what Nightwish was for me, along with Nemo, Ever Dream, and Walking in the Air. Those four were all I had, but it was enough to make them one of my all time favorites already. ❤❤❤

Tarjas voice really fits for this song, and she lets her voice carry the song.
Floor gives it much more emotions, passion and variation - at least that's how I feel it
Most played NW song in Finland btw (radio)

That's the mezzo-soprano register that I loved the first time I heard this song, using her classical training with the amazing music, you'll get this marvelous song.
Sometimes I wonder if she hadn't join to nightwish, she could have become in a great opera singer.

It’s honestly SO weird to hear this version from over 20 years ago. Her voice sounds so different now, so much more versatility and a much lighter tone. You can tell that she’s learned a lot over the years about how to stay grounded in classical techniques but adapt them to what the song needs. Hell, she even killed it on a *bluegrass cover* with Steve N Seagulls! Now that’s an arrangement that would be fun to see your reaction to 😂

Just some ramblings of a relatively new Nightwish fan.
First, I am surprised by discovering that there are 2 recorded versions and videos of this song. I knew the 2005 version with the battle scene which Nightwish posted on their RUclips channel just recently. I am surprised that Nightwish went all the way to shoot a new music video for this.
Second, I consider this song as part of my 4 favorite Tarja songs, e.g. songs that are perfectly suited for her voice and style. These 4 songs are Sleeping sun, Nemo, Walking in the air and Phantom of the Opera. maybe there are others that I have not discovered yet. For the other songs I have heard Tarja sing, she is of course great as well, but I see them less as songs that only Tarja can sing perfectly.

This song always make me smile and cry. Happy and sad at the same time. Beautiful. Tarja sings it well on record on both videos this one and the 2005 version. She pronounces the lyrics better than live. That's why I love Floors live version better. But this song is definitely on my top 10 songs ever. Beautiful. So happy that you finally heard it ❤️ Another ballads that I like are Forever Yours (Tarja), Eva (Anette) & Meadows of Heaven (Anette) 😊👍🏻
