  • I decided to do this video based on all the followup questions I got from folks trying to setup serial CAT control to their radio. Although aimed at Amateur Radio Operators, the tools used in this video can easily be used to figure out COM port settings for any system or need. If you like it let me know in the comments, and don't forget to subscribe!

Great job! I use my win10 PC for all sorts of serial stuff. Arduino, Raspberry Pi, CHIRP, etc. After watching this video I marked my case with the COM port numbers. 😂I'm an old school guy anyway, so I have to write down everything. 73's WD8OHE.

Thanks for your video's Stue, great help with N1MM. Would you have (or make) a video about what I think I port sharing. I have N1MM setup with my TS-590sg performing CAT control and the works, but I also want to use an SDR to control the rig. It seems like I need a "virtual" com port that is addressing the same cable that goes to the rig which is already in use by N1MM. Any thoughts would be great. Radio is the easy and fun stuff, but working with MS Windows is a daily challenge.

      Hi Mark,
Wow... I can't believe I missed your message! It's interesting that you ask that question because it was a huge problem for me when I setup all this stuff. Let me share some ideas...
First off, N1MM+ does not 'share' well with anything. It want's to control the radio and everything about it. There are other issues as well with other Ham software packages that give you trouble as well. I ended up buying a package called Win4Yaesu that could control my rig and had 6 virtual ports that you could setup to have other software 'think' it was talking directly to the radio. This was my final solution. But, although this software is available for other radio brands, it is limited as to what it supports. If you have an FT991, FTdx???? I would strongly recommend it, but that's not your current setup.
I have found something interesting in HDSDR that I have just begun testing. It is dependent on Onmirig software, but seems to solve the problem for many. It basically uses a virtual null modem cable configured through com0com and presents a TS-50s to other software connecting to it. Once I complete the test with N1MM+ I will post the video.

@@AG6AG Great, thank you for that info. No problem on the delay, I'm still trying all sorts of options. The SDR control I have dropped by the wayside, but I have added a second cable to the TS590 and now it has two com ports so I can run two pieces of software without virtualization. Some say that is also looking for issues, but it is a neat feature of the 590 to have two serial ports. I'll keep an eye out for new vids, I love all the information. Thanks!

The com port section in device manager is missing, what do i do from there
    ?

This usually implies that the device is not being identified by Windows. With the Device Manager open, plug the device into the USB port. Look for something showing up with a yellow or red mark on the left side of the device description somewhere on the tree. If you see something appear, it usually means that you need to download a driver for that particular device. This is common with Icom and Yaesu radios. Just go up to the product's web page and download the drivers for the device. If nothing shows up anywhere in the tree, you may have bad hardware.
      Hope this helps,

Go to view and then click on show hidden devices. If it doesn't show up then go to Action and add legacy device. Scroll down to select Ports (com).

Avoid Prolific adapter at all costs... it may crash your computer!

      Hi Andre,
The actual issue was with the counterfeit chips. For the what we use com ports for in Amateur Radio the 'real' Prolific chips are fine. If you are concerned, you certainly can order out the FDDI chip set devices...

Been using Prolific for many many years and it runs flawlessly. Prolific Driver version 3.2.0.0 is what you need

@@8du Yes if you have the right one but you don't know if you have a clone! Prolific did a very bad move to clone user that why I don't recommand it.
