I personally think that, the artists who were truly ‘self taught’ before the internet and youtube era, had reference material and discovered ‘tutorials’ from the world around them. Their ‘youtube tutorials’ were found by taking inspiration from life. And so you are self taught, if you are searching for the learning material yourself, as opposed to receiving a critique and actually being guided through your learning process, like people who attend art schools do.
I am currently attending an art ‘school’ but everything I have ever learned about art was learned through my own time, effort and hunger for knowledge.
I attended a figure drawing course. It's less of a guided learning style and more of a draw every class for 3 hours, and do your best to mimic reality. If you mess up a porpotion, you'll get a critique, but style doesn't matter; all that matters is replicating what you see.
Yes that is true it was lots of problem solving didn't have the luxury of hopping on the internet and studying other artists is basically a 90% failure rate because digital artbis not traditional there's unlimited processes, techniques, tools you won't figure out
Man I was really liking these podcast until DD Mark started talking about anime. I agree with Naruto, it's what got me into too, but Gintama, Haikyuu, and Grand Blue are easily in my top 10. Oh well everyone's taste are different lol. Can't wait to watch the rest and hope you guys come back to them someday, they are the best to listen too while drawing.
He did also work in a workshop during his youth with other artists. His teacher, Andrea del Verrocchio was a renowned painter at the time. He studied in another workshop as well from time to time. That's where he got his experience doing sculpture, painting etc. The dead body dissection thingy occurred later in his life. His passion to understand things in an anatomical level however came from hanging out with his uncle.
Yes, more Dr. Stone appreciation! Like Third, i got into the manga after some episodes, because of that i've read the America arc, which is one of the best in the series!
Ok lets start by defining what self taught is, for me- looking at things, observing, qnd learning form other things and others, for example lets take da vinci, he looked at naked bodies, examined corpses for theor muscle anotomy and perfected thier form shapes, that is hardcore self taught. he didnt have anyone to critique him nor guide him. but he still learnt. but nowdays we xan say we had to critique ourselvs ourself hence we didnt have a mentor, but we still learnt the techniques from pre-existing books/people/and other artists hence we still taught ourselves, but someone told us the techniques.for example lets take fishing, we read somewhere about the fishing rod, bait, general location of fishes and techniques to catch them, but noone was their to ur guide and correct ur mistakes hence you technically knew what were the techniques but taught urself to implement them yourselves.
Glad I found this podcast. This upcoming year I’ll be 30. I’ve spent my 20s going to college for education in a field I didn’t use (psych) and working. I am only realizing now that I want to change my approach from the structured to do the art I’ve wanted to. Finding that balance between what you want and what you need is a struggle.
i would argue that being self taught in art would allow youtube but with a fine line. for example you are self taught if you take the techniques and use them in your own way and expand upon them and create new things however if you watch a tutorial and do it exactly as the tutorial then you have not taught yourself art and have been taught art by someone else. this also opens up into the argument of are you really creative or just methodical and unoriginal. but other people will have different opinions. the end of the day i think youtube is a viable way to say you are self taught depending on the circumstances :))
30 Minutes in but I gotta drop my Top 5 for the boys Anime 5. Odd Taxi or Vivy: Flourite Eyes Song 4. Kaguya Sama: Love Is War 3. Steins;Gate 2. Mob Psycho 100 1.Haikyuu Manga: 5. NANA 4. Kamisama No Iutoori 3. Bokurano 2. School Rumble 1. Attack On Titan
Ok Bro Ima said this now 1 - if you can get a job with skill you learn on you own for art - yourself taught 2 - Art school is something you don't really need just start learning the skills needed 3 - i think it making a sructure for yourself so your hard work shows. To be honest I have drawn Promotional art for a wbetoon idea I have had but I have been so lazy but ima make a few goal for myself publicly to force my self to make this webtoon/manga a reality 1- ima write out 5 chapters ( I have wrote one chapter like three months ago) 2 - more challenging artwork ( Thing such as , Building, Backgound , jojo posing , perspective, colorung, shading, toning, cross-hatching.) 3 - get the 1 chapter of the webtoon/manga out ( I really want to do 45-55 Pages or more) Also Mark , One Piece > Naruto (NOT IN YOUR TOP 5!!! IM HIGHLY DISAPOINTED)
really enjoying this podcast so far! there's a fun dynamic between you both, it's quite wholesome at times haha. i can feel both your passion towards art and it's very inspiring and contagious, keep it up! would like to hear if you have any thoughts on FMA?
THANK YOU SO MUCH! This is third speaking, I think FMAB is really good adaptation of the manga, FMAB is in my top 10 :D I havent fully watch the FMA tho
This is a great podcast again, you guys are awesome ! All the themes you're talking about are so interesting and knowing your top 5 manga/anime was the cherry on the cake ! TYSM FOR THE SUPPORT! to answer ur 1st question : the way i manage my consistency is givng myself a tiny schedule everyday, and I do it EVERY single day, without missing a day, a week or a month. that helped me improve my self discipline. for the 2nd question : Best way to build up and improve ur creativity is to always experiment, try new things, and never stay on ur comfort zone :D
@@theartcastpodcast7280 I really want to thank you to had took the time to answer this. It's mean a lot. I write this down to keep it close, I really want to become has disciplined as you two are one day even if I'm really far from it in the actual present. I totally respect what you two had accomplished during your art journey It's really impressive and inspiring ! Thanks a lot to show us so much of your art journey. We are really lucky to have you two guys ! Just fantastic work, keep it up !!!
Listened to the whole podcast out of nowhere. I thought I was going to just watch like 5-10 minutes of it, but then I blinked and ended up watching the whole thing😂 I was listening to this while drawing and it was fantastic
I’m self taught who eventually went to art school. It helps if you’re already good, because art school vastly improved my skills and pushed me artistically beyond what I thought were my limits. I learned a lot of things that I would not have learned had I remained self taught. But school isn’t for everyone, though I can say that It helped me become more well rounded, gained a lot of experience and artistic growth by going back to college and art school.
That's so true that it's about skill nowadays with any job. Like one of the fitness RUclipsrs that I follow he went School to be like an exercise nutritionist type thing and he basically got the job and he went to school for like 4 years or something and like the guy didn't even look at his degree he said it's nice but like he didn't even care like he would have given him the job anyway just because he was skilled.
if i was the other guy i would have just left dd mark be interupting so much like i love him and hontley im happy he does this cus i get to here him a lot more the poor guy man give him some time
Difference being self taught and art school is pretty much just mentorship. I've been mostly self-taught for most of my life (I started drawing as a kid). Recently, I got into a program that teaches me some fundamental stuff that I've been practicing even before I got in the program, somehow I improved faster when it was taught to me at school instead of learning it from the internet. I've always been a better learner in a school setting so I guess it still comes down to the kind of person you are.
Great podcast guys, really enjoying hearing about your journeys and how you guys got there 👌🏻 I also feel like I have a natural talent for art and I also believe that many really good artists have natural talent but I also feel like to a certain degree it becomes skill because we as artists tend to push ourselves to improve more and thus become better at drawing so that's my thoughts on talent and skill
What would you suggest to someone who feels lost in his studies. I have a good feeling on gesture and structure but find trouble when to come to the, finer details. The art I want to replicate is Warcraft, not one particular artist from that franchise. There is a lot of em
I've been doing this with your other channels but as you're talking I tend to analyse the way you sketch down to when you completely render your art💀, I'm sorry but if being an art stalker had a term then I'd wear it with pride😂👀❤
ok that is my personal view as someone who has went to an art academy....IT SUCKS, do not go there useless you really don't know what you want to do in the creative world. you just go there for a few years, pay all your money, and they go out with a bunch of skills that you don't even want, i went in for art, i went out with basic art knowledge, ik how to make a sculpture, ik how to use autocade, ik how to make a figurine out of fucking q-tips and so much more shit that i never wanted to begin with.....so easy answer if you know what you want out the creative feild, do not go to art school, if you want to discover what you want, go there, you'll have a good time
In the self throught conversation I just think its both that you went off on your own and have searched up how to do certain things so you choose to learn something on your own , and (kinda more leaning on this side personally) that you are not self through tehnically cuz you are still being told what to do by a person doing art in a video. It is both and people need to accept that both sides have a point and are not one or the other, which also should be accepted about sooo many other things but ya.
You know i think saying "o well youtube people might not be selfthout" is a trap questions because by that logic everyone is selfthout, learning from a textbook is not selfhouht because someone else wright it, and so the only way of learning selfthout is trhu copying and hopping for the best which is not the bes way of learning, i think the line of selfthout extends to YOU look up the theory instead of someone telling you what you need to improve and how
My favourite anime: (no specific order) code geass, saiki k, hunter x hunter (2011), mob psycho 100, death note My favourite manga: (again, no specific order) Mashle, The Promised Neverland, Toilet Bound Hanako-Kun, Yu-Gi-Oh! (I am counting the original, Duellist and Millennium World as one manga like in the Japanese release, not the Western release). I have read series that are technically better, but in terms of enjoyment and personal interest these would be my favourites. I know my taste is bad lol.
TOP 5 Manga: 1.GANTZ 2. Tokyo Ghoul/Tokyoghoul Re: 3. Full Metal Alchemist 4. My Hero Academia 5. Claymore (Honorable mention DandaDan) Top 5 Anime 1. Full metal Alchemist Brotherhood 2. Code Geass 3. Gundam 00 4. Miss kobayashi's dragon maid 5.Ghost in the shell (Honorable mention My dress up darling)
I actually somehow got into art school as a beginner and I basically learned nothing .they don't teach you any fundamentals they just assume you already know how to draw. Basically they don't teach you how to draw or do anything. it was just like a huge waste of money . good thing I only did it for like a year so I didn't waste that much. Art school was so much better and like the Renaissance time. when Leonardo da Vinci was around it would actually teach you how to draw and paint. they would have assigned you like a master painter than you would work with him at his workshop and they would teach you all the drawing techniques. They wouldn't let you paint until u mastered the art of drawing so you would learn every fundamental from the beginning. Now art school is just about already knowing how to draw before you even get into the school and it's just about building up a portfolio to get hired by Disney or something. which is stupid basically u have to be self-taught before you even going to school because they don't teach you how to draw in a art school
🤔I never considered myself as a talented individual(artist), infact even now compared to most I'd probably be considered untalented 😅 but I still tend to draw for some bizzare reason, idkw😅💀
I have a friend that learned how to draw and he never studied anything drawing related, but you could see how he applied the drawing values on his stuff even though he didn't study about it a single time. Cos' similar to DD with the Ben 10 thing, he learned some values unconsciously by just copying, I'm not sure if it's an effective method at all, because the guys that I know that learned drawing that way, have been doing it by a long fucking time.
if u tried the method and it works for you then u should continue doing that, there a a lot of different methods, but not everything works for ya, so its better to try everything to see what really works
I don't think this all really matters how one is taught. Karl Kopinski got an art degree but he said he didn't learn anything from art school and had to just learn everything on his own. Then there are people who didn't get an art degree but pay a mentor online to critique their work.
If using youtube is not self taught. Then when you use Loomis and Bridgman books, did they teach you? NGL I would love to say I was taught by Bridgman.
@@theartcastpodcast7280 I feel self taught means finding out yourself...you didn't find out 2+2 was 4 until someone told u...but I also feel no one is self taught cause whether u like it or not someone has to tell u before u know...only if it is something new
25:43 my top 10 anime Mob psycho Jojo’s Neon Genesis evangelion Cowboy bebop Bleach Banana fish Gangsta No gun no life Great pretender Idk if this counts but panty stocking
I agree with a lot of these guys, One Punch Man story is not good even though Murata is the goat. like ill read the Manga and the story honestly feels like a waste of time. Whoever called Naruto Overrated though is obviously touched in the head.
I think self taught now is just finding the information yourself and not having proper feedback over it,like u know u suck at drawing legs then u find information that u have to teach yourself to understand ,like using images to understand stuff on your own "ohh this muscle connects to this spot etc" that's my opinion by the way
43:39 Not talking specifically about one piece, but the fact that something is "the best" is exactly why it's overrated. That viewer must think it doesn't deserve the top spot, that's totally valid. Just like I think fmab is a very good show, but I still think it's overrated. Both takes don't contradict.
@@theartcastpodcast7280 Glad you think. Well Samurai X was the same vibe as ippo had intense fights and comedy was funny. Full metal alchemist brotherhood definitely amazing! 😂 I don't want to go on an endless list but my gateway anime was DragonBall and Pokémon in the early 90s couldn't stop after that 🤘🏼.
I personally think that, the artists who were truly ‘self taught’ before the internet and youtube era, had reference material and discovered ‘tutorials’ from the world around them. 12:45 If I remember correctly da Vinci learned a lot his anatomy from performing dissections and making observational drawings from them
ohhh yeah thats true!
Hate to be that guy but Vinci is the city that Leonardo was born in, not his last name
He did also work in a workshop during his youth with other artists. His teacher, Andrea del Verrocchio was a renowned painter at the time. He studied in another workshop as well from time to time. That's where he got his experience doing sculpture, painting etc. The dead body dissection thingy occurred later in his life. Ok lets start by defining what self taught is,
for me- looking at things, observing, qnd learning form other things and others,
for example lets take da vinci, he looked at naked bodies, examined corpses for theor muscle anotomy and perfected thier form shapes, that is hardcore self taught. he didnt have anyone to critique him nor guide him. but he still learnt. but nowdays we xan say we had to critique ourselvs ourself hence we didnt have a mentor, but we still learnt the techniques from pre-existing books/people/and other artists hence we still taught ourselves, but someone told us the techniques.for example lets take fishing, we read somewhere about the fishing rod, bait, general location of fishes and techniques to catch them, but noone was their to ur guide and correct ur mistakes hence you technically knew what were the techniques but taught urself to implement them yourselves.

I would like to add to this that at the end of the u have to teach yourself because even if u have the worls best teacher i doesnt mean that if u leave everything on them then u will become a good artist and starting from scratch like not knowing anything about anotomy and learning it by yourself with even a yt video is a good idea because its realy timetaking and not practical
The best way lies in between them

Listen to what other things they add on
Learn from others mistakes
And do what fits for u 😊
Edit : at the end of the day i doesn't matter where u are self taught or not because everyone has a different style of working that works for them

Im a big fan of this podcast bro
THANK YOU
Ohhhh shit the big 1K is on the horizon 💪🏼💪🏼
yeahh!
Thx for amazing podcast, greetings from Poland
Thanks for listening!!
Let’s GOOOOO episode 3 is gonna be fire 🔥 I already know it
YESSIRR
Draw Ben 10 on chilhood ...
just perfect, my first drawing was ben 10
You know i think saying "o well youtube people might not be selfthout" is a trap questions because by that logic everyone is selfthout, learning from a textbook is not selfhouht because someone else wright it, and so the only way of learning selfthout is trhu copying and hopping for the best which is not the bes way of learning, i think the line of selfthout extends to YOU look up the theory instead of someone telling you what you need to improve and how
37:29 Boichi (Dr Stone Artist) has a RUclips channel too! We get to see some of his process!
Thats true!
My favourite anime: (no specific order) code geass, saiki k, hunter x hunter (2011), mob psycho 100, death note
My favourite manga: (again, no specific order) Mashle, The Promised Neverland, Toilet Bound Hanako-Kun, Yu-Gi-Oh! (I am counting the original, Duellist and Millennium World as one manga like in the Japanese release, not the Western release).
I have read series that are technically better, but in terms of enjoyment and personal interest these would be my favourites. I know my taste is bad lol.
W list! i love TPN too :D (This is third talking)
@@theartcastpodcast7280 :> ye I liked it but I havent watched the anime after what I've heard about season 2

Edit: and Ano Hana tho 😭
YEAHHHHH!!!
Just discovered you keep it up
I actually somehow got into art school as a beginner and I basically learned nothing .they don't teach you any fundamentals they just assume you already know how to draw.
This man's lists 🔥🔥🔥 Dr stone season 3 soon XD
HEHE TY
🤔I never considered myself as a talented individual(artist), infact even now compared to most I'd probably be considered untalented 😅 but I still tend to draw for some bizzare reason, idkw😅💀
I have a friend that learned how to draw and he never studied anything drawing related, but you could see how he applied the drawing values on his stuff even though he didn't study about it a single time.
Cos' similar to DD with the Ben 10 thing, he learned some values unconsciously by just copying, I'm not sure if it's an effective method at all, because the guys that I know that learned drawing that way, have been doing it by a long fucking time.
if u tried the method and it works for you then u should continue doing that, there a a lot of different methods, but not everything works for ya, so its better to try everything to see what really works
loving the podcast keep it up
Thank you very much!
Where's the thumbnail art from?
from DDmark and Thirdphp
it would be great to know which one is drawing on the bg with each ep 👀
we will try that for episode 8!
I don't think this all really matters how one is taught. Karl Kopinski got an art degree but he said he didn't learn anything from art school and had to just learn everything on his own. Then there are people who didn't get an art degree but pay a mentor online to critique their work.
Letss goooo
I was dieting for hws TT
ty
ur welcome!
If using youtube is not self taught. Then when you use Loomis and Bridgman books, did they teach you? NGL I would love to say I was taught by Bridgman.
good point hahaa, I could say Yusuke Murata taught me how to draw LMAO
LET'S GooOOO!
LETS GOO
@@theartcastpodcast7280 I feel self taught means finding out yourself...you didn't find out 2+2 was 4 until someone told u...but I also feel no one is self taught cause whether u like it or not someone has to tell u before u know...only if it is something new
But I also feel this is wrong
bro take my sub for having Dandadan in your top 5 lol
NOICE
I am self taught too but taking lessons for art class could be complicated to do and it may take years to do that
yeah thats true, but it really depends on the person, some learn faster alone some learn faster with a teacher
Been enjoying this a lot :3 ✨
glad to hear that :D
guys do a collab and make a banger manga
25:43 my top 10 anime
Mob psycho
Jojo’s
Neon Genesis evangelion
Cowboy bebop
Bleach
Banana fish
Gangsta
No gun no life
Great pretender
Idk if this counts but panty stocking
what is the name of the manga of the girl in the tumbnail
its an original character made by Thirdphp
Nice podcast keep it up guys
Thanks for listening!
I agree with a lot of these guys, One Punch Man story is not good even though Murata is the goat. like ill read the Manga and the story honestly feels like a waste of time. Whoever called Naruto Overrated though is obviously touched in the head.
HAhaa for real!
I think self taught now is just finding the information yourself and not having proper feedback over it,like u know u suck at drawing legs then u find information that u have to teach yourself to understand ,like using images to understand stuff on your own "ohh this muscle connects to this spot etc" that's my opinion by the way
yeahh I agree!
Lets goooo
LETS GOO
You guys not messing around, amazing content 👏
Tysm!
DD , Gintama is funny as hell,u tripping now fr fr
Hahaa, I should pin this so ddmark can see it
@@theartcastpodcast7280 DD's taste in entertainment probably sucks ,last time it was "Friends aint funny"
Man you 2 should open up a joined discord!
1:13 . we already know
"Story's mid, animation's the BEST!"
So.....Demon Slayer is Legend of Korra........ Yup. =P
43:39 Not talking specifically about one piece, but the fact that something is "the best" is exactly why it's overrated. That viewer must think it doesn't deserve the top spot, that's totally valid. Just like I think fmab is a very good show, but I still think it's overrated. Both takes don't contradict.
Whose is the girl on thumbnail?
Really loving the entire vibe of these podcast cant wait for the next one
Thank you very much!!
Watch Hajime no Ippo its funny and fights are amazing !
Third is speaking, I've watched Hajime no Ippo and its definitely up there! The series is amazing
I just need more discipline
yeah!
