Clark was an absolute beast! I took off from my school trip in TO that night, bought tickets from a scalper ...Great game!!! My 5 day suspension from school was well worth it!
damn it still gives me shivers when I look at it after all these years - for me Wendel Clark the embodiment of the complete hockey player, greetings from Poland
Had something going at the beginning then turned into a suitcase ruined his legacy. Playing for a paycheck. Quebec, New York, Chicago, Detroit. What.a joke💩
He stands up for his teammates regardless of who they are? The guy he stood up for just happened to be the most popular Leaf player in history. He was a very good player but God knows why most people fell for his fake "I'm small but I won't back down from anyone" bullshit. Sure you won't Dougie, as long as there was no real chance of you actually having to fight.
That 93 run was the best ever, there was a video put out later that year recapping the playoff run called the passion returns great video. the day after this fight the toronto star had a close up picture of the big shiner on mcsorley's face on the front page. Gilmour carried that team on his back. 1993 will never be duplicated, it was awesome. after the season the toronto sun had a picture of the leafs with the caption, "thanks for the dream season" it stayed on my wall for 10 years.....
100 percent. Wendel was my all time favorite. One glance and if a teammate was in trouble he'd be there. 93 will always be the best team and emotions that captured all of Toronto in a way not yet seen since then. Let alone the robbery we all had of not having seen a Habs leafs final for the last time!
This '93 team was fantastic. Clark and Gilmour were the heart and soul. The questionable "penalty" called from the Gretzky hit sunk us. I can not help but think it was a deliberate call against the Leafs to get them out of finals. Had Toronto beat LA...we would have faced the Montreal Canadians for the Stanley Cup. Everyone in Canada would have watched but no one in the US would have. I wonder if the NHL brass believed this too....and ofcourse, that can not happen.
This is why nobody wears no. 17 on the Leafs anymore. They don't need to retire Clark's #17 jersey. It's ALREADY retired. The ultimate sign of respect. The legend of Clark only grows with time.
Contrary to what the announcer said, Gilmour's head was not down at the blue line. McSorley charged him and landed a forearm/elbow smash to the jaw. Clark did well to stand up for his mate. Old school hockey at its best. I miss those days.
Hit was too late, elbow and even got his knee in there as well, it was because they were losing and mcsorley wanted to hit the leafs big star. Big hits were the norm back then, but it needed to be timed up, Puck was long gone. Dirty stuff happens a lot when the game is out of reach.
I have been watching hockey fights for over 40 years and this has to be THE best fight I have ever seen, and to top it off, Mc Sore Eye had his face re-arranged
You have to be more specific about what standing up for a team mate means. For this particular event, getting into a fight in front of a passioante home crowd that loves you is one thing, but getting your behind handed to you by the opponent is a different thing which is the actuality of this fight. Sure Clark hit Marty in the face a couple of times, but look what happened after that as Marty literally turned Clark into a punching bag and won the fight decisively.
I saw all these guys but I must say pound for pound Wendell Clarke was one tough SOB for his size.. He was a middle weight, not a heavy weight like McSorley..! And I'm a Blackhawk fan and the best I ever saw no doubt was Bob Probert and that gutsy Wendell even fought Probie.. What a player #17 was!

Rob M... You got that right Rob... Wendell was tough as nails and not a real big man.. McSorley wasn't a player of honor as far as I'm concerned and NO Bob Probert either, although they did have that record fight that seemed like it lasted for a period!...LOL

I remember this! It was probably one of the best playoff series in the NHL. Anyways, what most people don't know is Dougie Gilmour was hooking, poking, and slashing the Kings throughout that game and getting away with it, so Marty sent him alittle message to knock it off. Wendel Clark was one tough customer, he'd fight anyone, anytime. Remember way back when the Leafs played in the wesstern conference, back before Bettman took a huge shit on hockey tradition and got rid of the Adams, Patrick, Smythe and Norris divisions. I miss old time hockey
I still remember this. This whole shenanigans happen because of Wendel Clark. Before this shift Tony Granato I believe cross checked Bob Rouse on the head causing a mini brawl. And the reason that happen is because the shift before that Clark had 3 massive hits. So it was inevitable fire works was going to happen, especially the game was pretty much lop sided at that point.
i was a year old then and somehow remember watching that. clark has been my lifetime idol and him tuning up mcsorley is one of histories greatest battles. only the hextall/potvin bout compares

Love how the announcer moves very professionally from narrating the game to fight commentator. Brilliant.
That was Harry Neal.
It was by no means Harry Neal's first rodeo. He was a brilliant color commentator and his passion for the game was unmatched in the broadcast booth.
This is what the Leafs need now, another Wendell Clark.
A huge set on clark... McSorely could throw them and is a real tough SOB taking those 3 bombs and not dropping.
Clark was not " one of the heavy weights " but he fought like one .
put the crack pipe down. clark was definately a heavyweight
Clark was the greatest Maple Leaf ever!
We need a captain like that :D
oh man i would love to see another player like Wendel in the league today. the complete hockey player.
The Leafs had a great team in these years.... best chance to win a cup!!!
yes...we do need a captain like Wendel Clark. One of my favourite
leafs of all time!!
i was a year old then and somehow remember watching that. clark has been my lifetime idol and him tuning up mcsorley is one of histories greatest battles. only the hextall/potvin bout compares
Will never forget this one...especially McSorley's black eye on the front page of The Sun the next day...Gill vs. Taylor's bout was pretty good too, but was relegated to the undercard considering the combatants in the main-event.
Who remembers the caption in the paper the next day of Marty's black face? "Marty McSorry". I miss Wendel Clark.
Yeah but McSorley won the fight
Clark's face was still white. he won.
Look at their faces after the fight. thats the only thing that matters: "Damage". Clark won.
Tony Gambino does this look like the face of fight winner 1.bp.blogspot.com/_14EAkPRbXD8/S17Um5B13vI/AAAAAAAAARE/TPcUBVOew_Y/s1600-h/mcsorleyblackeye.jpg
Thank you so much!!!!!I been searching all over the net for this!
LOVE THAT GAME but the series blew!!! Dougie and Wendel the best.
