The most famous (or infamous) example is when 8,000 American marines held off a force of 30,000 Chinese soldiers and only retreated because they were ordered to do so.
When the Chinese invaded Vietnam their soldiers performed so poorly the Vietnamese actually thought they were facing untrained conscripts. On the other hand, the Americans had inflicted 1.1 million casualties on the North Vietnamese while losing 60,000 men.

The measurements are always based on the extent of a country's armament... and not on the soldier's capabilities or psychological state during war... (What is more important than the weapon is the soldier's heart... If the soldier is strong, no weapon will be able to deter him)
Germany had better soldiers than the soviets during WW2 but lost due to a lack of supplies and eventually got pushed back. Better soldiers are important but if you don't have the resources, you will eventually fail. The US has both.
