    Primer doesn't "clean it all, basically). Primer causes a chemical reaction that binds the pvc. Just don't want a diy'er to skip the primer because he bought new, clean PVC.

    • @JM-k-art
      @JM-k-art 3 месяца назад

      Primer does clean it if done properly.

    • @MatthewFinchest
      @MatthewFinchest 2 месяца назад

      It's tetrahydrofuran and acetone. It can certainly clean but the main purpose is to plasticize. Also, if it doesn't get fully clean, any grit will likely bind in with the dissolved PVC and glue.

    I have done this type of repair before, on a corner piece, but I didn't know how to place the middle piece in a straight line. Your technique is to just lift them up to insert the middle piece, smart. It just needs digging more along the pipe lines.

    I like this technique of using that short insert piece since getting a full size piece installed would be impossible. And it's not under much pressure so it should be fine. Great tip!

    You can use a PVC pipe cutter (looks like a big pair of pliers with blades) to neatly cut the tubing, without burrs.

      I saw a video made by a Plumber who recommended not using those ratcheting pipe cutters on pvc. He said that sometimes those tools can cause a linear crack down the pvc pipe. He recommended cutting it with a hand saw. I’ve used that ratcheting pipe cutter tool in the past and it worked out great for me. But I am guessing that if you are cutting a lot of pipe, it’s only a matter of time before it catches up to you. And then you have a shit storm on your hands.

    • @Stashmo
      @Stashmo 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@gp9164For thin pvc plumbing, the ratchet isn’t advisable. But it’s fine for irrigation pipe.
      Also, not sure why he didn’t measure how long the new piece needed to be before cementing the two couplers.

    The single piece repair kits have rubber seals/o-rings that can fail over time; your repair method is a better way to go. I'd use thin nitrile gloves to keep the primer and glue off of my hands and otherwise clean. Other than that, it's a good video. 👍👍👍

  • @kevincywu999
    @kevincywu999 Год назад +1

    Quick important note before turning water on... I followed your video and thank you for it, however, if you have a high pressure pipe, the manufacturer states the following: Allow 15 minutes for good handling strength and 2 hours cure time at temperatures above 60 degrees Fahrenheit before pressure testing up to 180 psi. Longer cure times may be required at temperatures below 60 degrees Fahrenheit or with pipe above 3 inches. DO NOT TEST WITH AIR.
    I made the mistake of testing my fixed pipe within 10-15 minutes, and it did run for about 1 minute before the pipe burst!!! It wasn't a bad damage as I just had to cut a longer length and get new couplings, so now I am waiting 2 hours minimum before I test my fixed pipe under pressure.

    2 things, let it set up for 30-45 minutes before putting water on it and it's a little easier to wrestle in a longer patch pipe - I like to put the couplers on the patch pipe so I'm spending less time on my knees, but either way works.

    • @PilotJon
      @PilotJon  Год назад

      Oh that’s brutal! There is a tool you can use to run a new hole from one side of the driveway to the other. It’s really inexpensive also. It uses water psi from a yard hose. My fear and the reason I won’t publish that, is if it doesn’t go smoothly (large aggregate) you could create a hollow space under the driveway and that would later possibly cause a cave in, though likely minor it’s a tough job

    • @magichands6319

      Check for a spare run of PVC next to the original run under the driveway. It should stub out close to where the original one comes out from under the driveway. This is what I learned when I had my entire driveway replaced. The concrete guys said this is a common practice in case the original line goes kaput! Made sure I had a spare under the new driveway and capped off each end on about a 3” protruding stub.

    I really dislike when people don't properly deburr the pipe ends before solvent bonding everything together... deburring is just as, or more important than using primer.

    hmm you just bypassed the head altogether which usually isn't the case; many people would still need to use a female thread 90 degree to make use of the area

      He mentioned that in the video you can still install the 2 there instead of the pipe....

    why not just use the replacement pipe to get you're measurement?

    Oh, this is bad, bad, bad. The actual water seal is made by the END FACE of the PVC pipe bottoming against the flat face of the FLANGE inside the coupling. The glue on the cylindrical surfaces just holds the parts together. You're lucky if it seals all the way around.

      🤣😂🤣 works fine, I’m 100% sure the file does the sealing..… always. Thanks for the input though

    Dumb question. I assume you need to turn off all the water in your home first. Right?

      Not dumb at all- at least the water to the line you are working on

    And primer should not be dry before glue is applied- not like here

    What about 2 inch pipe. It’s not as flexible as the 3/4 inch pipe you are repairing.

    Repairs are easy, it’s the digging, roots, etc. I also wear rubber gloves, if the primer gets on your hands, it’s a mess.
