As a few have mentioned the tube is there for better bass. The reason it is a tube and not just a hole is that bass wave lengths are longer than treble wave lengths. The tube will slightly delay the bass waves exiting the speaker so that the bass and treble waves are closer together when reaching your ear. It is technology called Bass Reflex.
I've had good luck undoing things that have those plastic pinned parts by using a soldering iron. Gently heat the plastic pin top while prying the underneath part up. The pin will get extruded through the hole and be the correct size for reassembly without loss of plastic. Works for circuits boards, switches like this one, and even plastic-to-plastic pinned parts. I usually unplug the iron to let it cool some before doing this. Reassembly is just as simple- use the warm iron to stake the pin back down. Good luck! I'm in awe of your successes!
LOL!!!!!!! I've litterally just unpaused it after we spoke a few mins ago, and low and behold my live stream title is appearing on your DAB radio!!!! =D Great job, nice fix!!
Hey Vince, quick soldering tip (pun intended): I reccomend an iron with a "direct drive" tip system like the TS100 or the KSGER T12 Station (both $50). The tip is heated internally, so it's much more powerful, even at low temperatures. Interesting fix as always!
Well this morning I was late for work last night I went to bed listening to you vince and this morning I slept through my alarm thinking it was you testing for continuity then realised it was my alarm 😆😆😆
Only Vince would spend the time to fix a component that should cost less than a penny....but heh, way to go Vince....Nice job and a very nice looking radio too.
Glass fibre brush is very good for cleaning up corroded contacts. I use one all the time and they're less than £2. Also Vince with the amount of desoldering you do, maybe invest £20 on a soldering iron with built in electric solder pump. Loads faster and avoids heating the joints for too long.
Hi Vince, I know it's off topic, but I've just seen on eBay UK that you can pick up replacement switch screens for £22.45. Thought that might be something you could be interested in. Thanks for the content, you are keeping us sane.
Hi Vince. This DAB radios are made very well imho, good deal. Bass reflex, maybe soundproof foam, bluetooth connection, estetic design, nice big volume knob. My little advice is to keep electronic waste PCB's, after while you got spares ( like this switch in video ) ready to go.
@@StephenArsenault I agree that sometimes can be interesting to see what makes something tick but this is at least second time he have problem with same type of switch and now is time to make a stock of them. They are everywhere. I'll make a order of car-key type switches also, lot's of newer stuff use them instead, even cheapest stuff are now SMD.
The very reason why My Mate Vince is a hit @@StephenArsenault Most of us like how he gets right into fixing things like lets say a component is simply not available so if it can be taken apart or retrofitted he with out a doubt will use his genius to hack it to work and in some cases improve on its original design and I stress "SOME CASES" ;)
I believe the poly-fil should blanket the back of the speaker to dissipate the air movement from the speaker . It's supposed to give you bigger bass and is pretty common in home theatre speakers . Seems very well built for what it is .
As an American, I had to look up what DAB mode was. Apparently ours is transparent and works on the same wavelength as FM so radio stations just transmit at the same frequencies and if you have a digital radio, you just tune into the same channel. Today I learned.
Nice job on this one! I'm sure it's been said, but the tube is to help your bass response..... There's a whole science, and math formulas, for how to design a speaker that sounds good....
The pipe is a bass pipe(also called other things). When the speaker pushes forward it pushes the air which makes sound when it pushes back with out a bass pipe it pushes the air in the device and muffles the sound. The bass pipe is just there to improve the sound quality by allowing the air to come out.
Hi Vince hope you and the family are well. Was just wondering if you had of give that little switch a bath in your Ultrasonic Cleaner would that of worked? Mick 👍🍻
i would recommend buying at least one multi power adapter, so you get multiple connectors, can set the voltage and also have ac or dc, would make testing items that dont have a psu or lead a lot easier. also the tube/hole in the radio is the bass port, as the unit is sealed, when the speaker moves in and out the pressure can escape out the port, creating the bass sound
What's the beat at 7:32 and vice I always love seeing you bring life back into old electronics and I'm a fan of you hour long videos keep up the good work.
I've replaced these plenty of times. I am not a fan of these tac switches because after sitting a while they tend to oxidize. I pull these switches out of old VCRs and TVs I get from the dump. I am running out of them at the moment and they are changing, they are smaller now. Also what's that USB port on the back of that radio used for? Can you hook it to a PC and it shows up as a USB audio device and you can either play audio through it or put the radio on and hit record in an audio recording program and it records what's playing on the radio to the PC?
Hey, so I think in one video I saw you use the 5 second fix it liquid plastic. Am I right about that? Anyway that stuff is terrible but Bondic is no joke. I would have used a tiny bit on that button. You might have to import it and it's totally worth it. I'll never use contact glue again. I used it recently on a thrustmaster HOTAS 4. Someone yanked on the stick so hard it snapped the mounts right off. A little bit of bondic has them mounted back in very strong.
You didn't need to cut the posts off the switch, the rubber piece used to press the switch can just be pulled out. Elliott from The Retro Future has done it in several of his vids.
yes bass port is the name its allows sound from the rear side of the diaphragm to increase the efficiency of the system at low frequencies as compared to a typical sealed- or closed-box loudspeaker or an infinite baffle mounting. The extra mass allows for better low frequency response, that also why it had some baffling material (hollow fibre i think) to deaden the sound. looks like a slightly better engineered system than the other dab radios you've taken a look at. Not worth 80 quid though.
hello mate,i follow youre videos tryng to fix DABS i have an majority DAB RADIO not turning on,i open it and check all cbles and buttons if works but still nothing :) can you suggest me any idea to try fix it? Thanks

you know what i watch your video i did the same as you the play button went in my 4 track cassette record i will say the part you fix is very small i had to use a zoom to look at it it came apart easy than the part you fixed
I have the same radio and it appears to tune fine and all functions are ok, no sound anymore?!🥺😔 Any idea what could it be? Would really appreciate some help..
Hi Vince. Do you have any helpful videos for setting up multi room speakers new to tech checked online they asking $5-6 hundred amaerican for 4 small speakers. Or anyone else would appreciate the help. Thanks
12:37 Actually, sane people would just replace it with a new one. Edit: But it is actually nice to see how your insanity came to a productive outcome. Just from own experience, working with super glue on these switches is actually very borderline. When it get's into the switch, it is ultimately ruined.
2:20 Bass Reflex Vince, just browse some wiki first (mby smth about... speakers?... like proper monitors and their design), you would not ask those questions... i like your vids but dmn... even i knew what bass reflex was priot to start working with sound (and i wasn't interested in it prior to that) edit: noticed daw75 already posted a link for you :)

Its pretty depressing that this thing costs £80! I have a tesco dab clock radio that looks the same electronics and cost about a fiver and frankly it was a fiver too much unfortunately its not very good! I have a bunch off those switches, I could have sent you one no need to dismantle them.
Love how you really try to get stuff working before buying replacement parts.

Thank you Vince for showing that things can be cleaned and fixed VS buying new.
You are doing a really good job, Vince!
I admire trying to fix even the button! They may be super cheap to buy extras of, but it made for an interesting watch.
Your fibreglass brush would have been better at cleaning those contacts with or without IPA. Great video.
these switches are 100 for pound or even less (I buy 200 of them for 1.50$ on aliexpress) and you really should have them in spare parts box.
I would have replaced it as well, but it was interesting to see how the switch is constructed (and good to know if you're in a pinch or impatient)

I’m not the brightest but if I remember the cone is to help the bass it makes it sound better not as hollow of a sound
The tube and hole in the bottom are a bass port to improve bass response.
You might be able to combine pressing buttons to get a different preset as it looks like they are all in series with resistors. :-)
This platic tube inside it should be bass reflex as far as I know.
That's the term I was looking for, cheers.

2:05 that is for the air from the speaker, the speaker produces air when working so that is called a port for the speaker.
