Nice. We have a band here in Columbus Ohio that every December covers live all 200+ Beatles songs in a 12 hour Marathon. Pretty crazy!
I live in Columbus Ohio to, I didn’t know that gotta check it out
@@gagetgm_official3944 This year will be the 11th in a row but will be online streaming this time. Normally it's at The Bluestone on E Broad. It'll be streaming NYE starting at noon on Sgt Peppercorn's Marathon facebook page.
@@davidwalsh390 thanks for the info
I'm from the UK
I would be happy to see that. Would be fab 👍
wow, did not know that. I'm only a couple states away.
I got the cassette tape box as a Christmas present from my parents in 1981. I loved all the eight tapes. Later on I was surprised to know that All My Loving in With the Beatles album starts without Ringo's hi-hat count. To me, that song definitely needs the first five counts. Even now I feel uncomfortable when I hear the song without it. First musical experiences in childhood give such dominative influence on life afterwards.
that mix was on an israeli 'greatest hits' lp, with alan aldridge's drawing of them as old men...i thought that was its first appearance, but apparently made its debut on the u.k. '62-'66 lp. i think. i still can't hear any bass on 'i'm down'...regards...
its odd, uh? the versions we hear first are often the versions we like best. its not a constant, but it is common. i think it has to do with "familiarity." humans just tend to embrace the familiar. i'm that way too. and like everything else, sometimes its a good thing and sometimes not so good.
I just picked up this set for £62. Every time I watch one of your videos I end up spending more money. I now have the BC13 box set, the German Magical Mystery Tour and Please Please Me albums, the DeAgostini Help! LP, the 2019 singles collection in addition to this Beatles Box amongst others all due to your recommendations. I don't regret any of them.
My aunt had the Australian version, I was too young to understand anything about the different mixes, but spent many afternoons working my way through the entire box several times. It formed a big part of my early musical education.
I was at a small record/CD/cassette fair and my mother and I noticed this set. That was the single best day for my record collection, as I also found an original 1971 copy of 'Hunky Dory' by Bowie. I definitely recommend this collection!
Finally got a Japanese one for $80. You weren't kidding about the records being quiet. It sounds even better than I expected and it's nice to have these rarities in one place. And as always it's good to have another Beatles box in the house. Thanks for the heads up (two years ago...)!
Nice one, Jason. Enjoy!
Got a japanese one a few days ago for 200€. The box had a few scratches, but the records are brand new and look like they've been played maybe once or twice. The sound is amazing. Highly recommended!
Another great video. We are the same age and I began my Beatles vinyl collecting in 1980 as well. I am an ardent fan. I have to admit i never liked the packaging of this box set...in fact I thought it made The Beatles look cheap. I had the chance to purchase a mint set a few months ago for $50 Aus and turned it down without regret. Your video has certainly changed my opinion sound wise. Wonderdul stuff and very appreciated..thanks so much for the effort you put in.
Cheers and stay safe
Cheers, Steve. Pick it up the next time you see it. It's great value, which is something rare these days in the world of vinyl box sets. Stay safe too!
Great vid man. This is the set that got me into The Beatles in the 90’s. Me mum and dad had a copy and I played it to death, especially disc 3! Going to borrow it off them and play it again. I always thought it sounded brilliant, and yeah very few crackles on the vinyl
Thanks for watching, Nick
Bought this back in 1981, new from Disc Jockey Records for $15. The clerks asked if I would open it so they could see what it looked like! I've kept it in nice condition since it was a prized possession in my Beatles collection.
I know this video posted a long time ago - and I just listened to it once again - so informative and interesting (as always) Andrew. Thank you so much for all you do to further the appreciation of Beatles music and analog in general. I just purchased a copy of the UK issue set from discogs and I'm waiting for delivery at the moment. Looking forward to spending a few evenings enjoying it. Thanks again from a fan over in the USA.
Glad it was helpful. Hope you enjoy your set!
I’ve got the Japanese pressing. It sounds so good that I don’t feel the need to find a second, though for completeness sake I kind of want the UK pressing.
Another interesting and informative video, Andrew. I was aware of this set but already own all the alternate takes included here on other sources. Including them all here in this set does make it a valuable and worthwhile commodity. This set was never issued here in the states. Why not is anybody's guess. Great job shedding light on some of the sound differences compared with the BC-13 box. Looking forward, as always, to your next vid. Stay well.
Thanks again for watching, Bob. Odd that it wasn't issued in the States. Finding one is easy, but I think the shipping costs from the UK would be more than the purchase price. Stay well too.
Hey Andrew, a little update for you on the Ringo “Love Me Do”. The version on the US RARITIES comp came from a copy of the Canadian Capitol single (72076) that was owned by Ron Furmanek. The Canadian single was actually a needledrop of a UK Parlophone stock copy, sent by EMI with other contemporary releases to Canada for possible release. No idea what source was used for the World Box, but pretty sure it’s from a UK source. Cheers.
Dude I fucking love your videos. Finally someone dissent to hear and discuss from the deep hard-core beatles world. Thank you man! Cheers from Mexico City.
Thanks a lot, Paul. All the best from Austria.
I was given this by my Aunt a few years back, the box hasn't aged well but the records are all in excellent shape. Haven't played any of it in an age, will dig it out this week for a spin 👍
Andrew, the way you have title cards smiling and gesturing at interesting releases, we can't resist binging your videos one after another. I'm asking my husband to groom his facial hair like you. Thank you for your enormous contribution to our collectors knowledge base.
Thank you! So glad you enjoy them!
Hey, Andrew, another very informative video from you which, of course, is much appreciated. I have this box set in my collection and I am quite happy about it. Please, keep the videos coming. Best, Nelio.
Thanks for watching, Nelio. More coming soon.
Nice review! I picked up my copy - UK - on Ebay around 10-ish years ago; in excellent condition, for a £15 'buy it now' price! :-)
Wow... another awesome video, my friend!!! Rich content and detailed analysis!!! Thanks for posting... all the best from your Brazilian friend!
Glad you enjoyed it, my friend. Thanks for watching and love your videos too! All the best from Austria!
@@Parlogram Really glad you enjoyed my videos... that's a real pleasure!
Hi Andrew, I enjoy your channel so much, thanks for all your effort!
I own the UK and JPN versions of this set and like the mastering of the UK one better.
I have a question, which tapes were used to cut these sets? Did the Uk one use a generation earlier than the other boxes? When I look at the MFSL picture of the Abbey Road mastertape box there doesn’t seem to be an entree for this box as there was for example the blue album.
Can you bring light at this?
Greetings from the Netherlands, Ido
Wow, I got this when I was ten, still have it, what an intro to the group
I really would love to finally add this boxset to my collection. I had cassette recordings of all these 8LPs and loved the alternative versions. Ebay here I come.
Go for it, Chris!
Do it! Just got mine.... WRC issued. Sound is glorious. Better than blue box.
@@Parlogram Hi Andrew, I’ve been looking on eBay for a set with varying prices and conditions. Obviously I want a good quality set but don’t want to pay through the nose for it. There seems to be loads of Japanese Odeon sets but I would prefer UK or Australian pressings. What would you consider a good price ? ( or a limit) Thanks in advance for any advice.
Keep making the wonderful videos.
I just picked a mint condition UK boxset for 75pounds cash from a second hand record shop in Keynsham. It’s unbelievable how immaculate the box is and not one single mark on all the 8LPs. I struck Gold i think. They sound amazing. Plus the previous owner had put in additional original EMI inner sleeves like the first 1960s pressings.
Great video! I had heard about this set's inclusion of the rare versions, but I wasn't sure if the sound quality justified the extra investment. These are going to shoot up in price now! Since you asked for suggestions for future videos: how about the Mobile Fidelity box?
Hi Andrew, as usual great video. However I do have some minor corrections. The tracks “Long Tall Sally”, “I Call Your Name”, “Matchbox “, “Slow Down”, and “I’m Down” were previously available in stereo on 1976 compilation album “Rock n Roll Music”. Original UK and Japanese versions were used unaltered stereo mixes. And, as you know, the US version tracks were altered by George Martin. He added EQ, filtered the bass and placed in the center, and reversed the stereo image.
Already noted, thanks.
Lots of information new to me in your videos, keep up the good work.
Thanks Andrew great video. Two rare cuts you missed, Daytripper in a different key but same arrangement is from early 'Yesterday and Today' and Paperback Writer is reversed stereo image from early 'hey Jude'. There are various miscredits on the label disc 8, UK version. Apart from looking cheap Beatles Box is an excellent and great sounding set.
Hello! Wonderful video. I just picked up a copy of this in great shape and great price. Spot on about those rare cuts and sound quality. Thanks Andrew for the video. Now I’m looking for the boxed set version of Beach Boys
Glad to have been of help. Good luck finding the Beach Boys set. Let us know how it sounds.
Hi!
First time making a comment and I have to say your channel is amazing, great content and love for The Beatles.
About the box, I just bought a From Liverpool box and it's completely different form the UK box. For starters the initials are different and the label says "Reader's Digest"!
Hi Angelo, Thank you for watching the channel and congratulations on your box set. The Reader's Digest label was used on copies pressed in countries such as Australia, New Zealand and Mexico.
I love your videos man. Im a huge Beatles fan and your very informative. Keep on coming with the videos. Very interesting to watch.👍🏻🤘🏻
Thanks! Will do!
I'd like to put in a word about the World Record Club Beach Boys box set from about the same time. Similarly, it features rare mixes, takes and a whole bonus album of Brian Wilson's productions. Like The Beatles box it also came out in Japan and Australia.
I'm surprised my dear Mexico had its own box. I'll look for it later, it looks like a great piece to collect in the "under 100 USD" range. Great video as always
Great video Andrew. I’ve been collecting since 1979 after seeing all of the films that Christmas..although I’ve always been one for playing my records to death so I have few rarities in my collection!
I did pick this box set up in the late 80s from my mums boss for about 20 quid (unplayed). I’ve only recently sat down and played the box in full and have to agree with you they sound fabulous. The early stereo mixes in particular are very clean and clear sounding.
Keep up the great work! Nigel
Thanks, Nigel. I also remember watching all the films that Christmas on BBC2 and got the box a short time later. Happy days!
Great review!! I always found it strange that there was so much Help representation on this box set, but hey, I can always listen to omitted tracks elsewhere! :)
I received my French pressing (with sleeves pressed in Holland) just 4 days ago. It was your video that made me look for it. I don't know if I believed you about sound quality when I first watched your video, but you were definitely right and this set blew me away soundwise. It is definitely one of the best (if not the best) sounding Beatles records in my collection. The surprises came one after the other! Having been accustomed to the duophonic "P.S. I Love You" from "Love Songs", the song re-invented itself in here. "Misery" sounds as good as ever and the handclaps on "Roll Over Beethoven" sound as if executed in the same room as me! I have only played record 1 so far, but I'll definitely be making high-quality cassette copies of this to re-discover the Beatles as I move on! I did love vinyl/cd boxes before receiving this, but this one will definitely make me adore them. Thanks again for the nice little details and keep up the good work.
Xtra info: My French pressing contains a gatefold insert mentioning the rare mixes.
Congratulations! Glad we were able to be of service!
Beatles Ballads is such a great compilation album. I listen to it from time to time.
I ve got the beatles box set! Whole family Loves it........❤
Superb once again Andrew! Thanks for sharing..
Glad you enjoyed it, Brian.
Excellent analysis.,, thank you
Glad you liked it!
I have a Spanish pressing...its been in my family for as long as I can remember...it was recently passed down to me...so grateful...thank you for all the insights.
Thanks for watching, Fernando.
@@Parlogram hi...cool no problem...just one question...do you happen to know the first Beatles box set...what year did it come out? I'm very curious...thanx
Ok I'm gonna be on this channel a lot. Just found you. Watched about 3 video all great. I've got some good pressings. This is fascinating
Welcome aboard, Reuven!
Thanks for this really interesting and informative review, Andrew. I remember this being advertised when I was a teenager and always wondered what it was like; I had no idea it contained so many interesting versions. A couple of weeks after viewing your review I saw this in a a second had vinyl shop in Christchurch, NZ for $80 so I bought it. It’s the NZ-variant with Readers Digest labels. The box is a little shelf-worn but the discs look unplayed. So pleased to have added this to my collection - thanks!
Great to hear you managed to find a copy. Enjoy!
@@Parlogram I too have the 1980 Reader Digest box set version the same as Simes box (mine has ''1980 World Records Ltd'' on the back of each record cover, but Reader Digest in red letters on the labels) Mine was bought in New Zeaand too, I moved to Denmark many years ago & took my Beatles records with me. Mine are all the same mixes as described in this clip & sounds FAB !. Thanks for pointing out all the varous versions, I didn't realise they were on my LP's. It gave me a good excuse to play them all again.
On August 30 I recently bought the world records Beatles box set what you were talking about Andrew and I was really excited to get that box that even though it took a while for it to be delivered in the mail from Amazon. that got my interest in obtaining awesome Beatles box sets with a lot of rarities including the untrimmed Version of all my loving and all the other songs as well that you pointed out. I can’t wait to listen to it I think it’ll be fantastic and when I bought my copy I looked at the condition of the boxer and it was in very good shape and the vinyl was great shape to as well as the album covers as well.
Congratulations and enjoy!
Loving your channel - Thanks.
I got this UK 8LP box set on release Dec 1980 - £29.95, took about 3 weeks to arrive. The hook for me was the advertised unique stereo mixes here in the UK. Curiously, it arrived the day John Lennon's murder was announced.
Such a shame that some of the sleeves have wrong-era photos, & one is reversed (Paul is right-handed !!) + the "Help!" album is over-represented, having 12/13 tracks represented + it's borderline criminal that "All Together Now" was preferred over "Hey Bulldog" IMO.
Thanks for watching, Tony.
Great review. I recently bought a mint copy (UK Version)from Osaka with the certificate last Feb 2020. I like it even more coz of this review... More reviews please... 👍👍👍
Thanks for watching. More reviews coming soon!
I found my set around 1981 in a shop called Easystreet Records in Bellevue, Washington.
I think sound of this set sounds wonderful it never sounds harsh or aggressive the balance of sound is just right and seems more enjoyable than some of the remastered l.ps that have surfaced in recent years .
Thanks for letting me share with you,Andrew, about the Capiphone project.Fans around the world will love this 20 disc set.My different setups for The White Album
and Abbey Road, may or may not be included, depending on whether Giles,Paul and Ringo feel about them being slightly altered.
Just found this review. Bought the UK Vinyl set when first came out and whilst have not listened to it for some time agree the sound of the vinyl set is very good and I was surprised at the alternate versions at the time. Great review
Thanks Marcus, glad you enjoyed it.
I found a dead stock box at one of the local shops here in Tokyo a few weeks ago. I was on the fence about it at first, but this video pushed me over the edge and I picked it up for USD$40. Loving the AAA sound and the rarities, but scratching my head over some of the track selection. 'Don't Pass Me By' but no 'Tomorrow Never Knows'???
if i'm not mistaken it also included probably the beatles' worst song, "mr. moonlight." who was the genius who decided to put that on this collection? i still like this set A LOT! i always included the song oddities from this collection on all the beatle mix tapes i made.
Depends on how they would fell about the slight alterations to them.3 discs for the White, which includes Hey Jude, and a reprise of same on the 3rd disc, but an alternative for the mono for REVOLUTION.Abbey Road would replace Come Together and Something, but would the World Wildlife Across The Universe be included, yes.Adhering to John's "no singles"rule here, even if he did ok it.A later compendium program features them.
As a kid, I’ve always wanted to look into this box set, watching this, now I want to find one.
It's quite easy to find. Go for it!
I have seen them on eBay recently.
Bro I love these videos they are so informative all my Beatles records are 2012 remaster , except for my Rock and Roll album, love songs, red and blue and my Capitol 1980 a hard day's night and my Capitol 1981 white album
Hi from Spain, Andrew. I recently acquired one of the sets. Truly great value for money and a unique opportunity to own a vast selection of their catalog before any digital remastering. Funny enough some Dutch copies (like mine) have a wrong label on Record 3 of the set. Side 2 has no label mentioning the Beatles tracks, accidentally it has a label that was from a Dutch popgroup called "Drukwerk" ("Printing" in English). Fortunately, only the label is wrong. Beyond that, I don't see HM initials but SM... 🤔. Love your videos!
Congratulations Ricardo. Dutch pressings sound great!
One of the studio mix discs I recently got back for the Capiphone project DOES(I forgot I included these in the mixing project at all!!!)include BOTH Hollywood Bowl'64 AND '65 SOUNDBOARD shows!!!!!,LUCKY ME!!!My original sources for these were sold off awhile back.Huess what's also included in the Capiphone set,IN ADDITION!!!!-YES BOTH COMPLETE SHOWS!! Sweeeeeet!!!!!
Hi Andrew. Great videos as always and the attention to detail is mind boggling. I know you are looking for ideas for new vids. I would love to hear a lowdown on the history and issues of the Beatles EPs. It's understandable that they ended around 1966 bar MMT but if you look back, when EMI had a void to fill after they quit touring, how they never issued an EP with songs from Revolver. That would have been a relic! Thanks for the hard work!
Nice idea. The EP story is on my list. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for explaining the reasons for the flimsy 115 G vinyl in this set. A little surface noise is not a big deal, but warped or concave records to me are only worthy of landfill or the thrift store. I highly recommend the "Dr. Ebbetts" mini-LP set!
I was unaware DESS made a version of this set.
@@simu6244 Yes! You should own one!
I remember seeing an ad for this in a magazine or something when I was a kid. My mum wouldn’t get it for me. Wish she had again after seeing this.
Et voilà... just because of this (great as usual) video, I felt the urge to get a mint UK copy of this box! It wasn't too difficult, fortunately, since as Andrew says, there are plenty around just waiting to be found!
At last, finally, somebody has reviewed this box set.I thought I was the only one who owned it.When EMI re-issued Rock and Roll compilation as two separate l.p's did they also remix the tracks?
The tracks on the original U.S. version of 'Rock & Roll Music' were remixed back in 1976 and it was these which were used on the separated discs.
hi Andrew great vid. i had a friend who got a copy and we wore it down with continuous play something rotten. i',m intrigued to know if the I'm only sleeping track from this boxset is on the new revolver boxset your ears are more tuned to this than mine. would love too see if you could pull out this kind of thing in past and future boxsets of each album many thanks.
Got this from my uncle, along with a lot of other old beatle records. The boxset is in really good condition and im very glad to have one
I agree, I've always seen this box as the unsung hero of Beatles collectibles.
I like the collection of record carrier bags in the background. I bought records in all of those during the 80s.
Hello Andrew :The truth is that it is a very good set, I remember when the promotional disc arrived in the mailbox, I can't wait to put it on, but unfortunately it was lost in the mists of time.
In its day it was impossible for me to acquire it, luckily I was able to get one a year and a half ago.
The edition that I have is the Spanish one, differences with the English one, since all the songs are the standard ones published in Spain, except for "I feel fine", "All my loving" does not have the intro, "And I lover her" it's the normal one with four bars and not six, as well as "The continuing" which does have the flamenco guitar at the beginning.
The box comes with a flap to open on the front and includes a text booklet, apart from the text that appears on the back covers of the discs.
The disc labels are red with black text, the reference number for the first one is: 10c 164-007.560.
The covers are laminated.
But overall a must have set with a great sound.
Greetings from Spain
Brilliant review of unexpectedly great box set - great for completists but with some good different versions of songs.
Thank you for this particular video. I just purchased a mint condition Japanese edition.
Very nice!
Another great vid, Andrew! Never gave this set a thought until now--just may have to indulge in it eventually (and yeah, why has there not been more comment about the egregious Penny Lane promo version on the Sgt Pepper deluxe box? Sounds like the most amateurish needledrop imaginable.)
Great video - I really love your content. A friend of mine had a Beatles box set in 1981 which had a version of 'I'm Looking Through You' with two false starts (sadly, I have just played the tape I made at the time to check I recalled correctly!!) . I assumed it was from this one but perhaps not. Was there another Box Set doing the rounds at the time in the UK?
Thanks for your kind words. The false start version could have been on this set which was pressed in another country - Mexico for example. Some countries used their own tapes rather than the UK ones.
Great video and I love this Box set - I bought it at the time and couldn't believe all the different versions on there! I still have it.
One thing that puzzled me - I'm not sure why you mention that "Ringo's version" of Love Me Do was not available on vinyl in the UK after the original 1962 release, until the 1980 Box collection. Surely it was still available as the single (ie not out of print) and was also available in the 1976 "Singles Collection" - the ones with the green sleeves? I'm sure that was the original Ringo version.
The 1976 single contained the album version, not the original Ringo version.
@@Parlogram Oh - I never realised that! I always assumed they were straight re issues of the originals. I bought them one at a time when they came out in 1976 (pocket money wouldn't stretch to getting them all at once) and remember being so excited to get each one, especially since there were songs I'd never heard until then on some of the B sides. Back then the only way of hearing the "stand alone" B sides was to get the single of course, or maybe on the radio if you were lucky. I'd never heard songs like Thank You Girl, I'll Get You and Yes It Is. I just watched your video about the singles Boxed Sets. Thanks, very interesting videos!
Hi Andrew, I have a suggestion for a future video.
Like the BC-13 blue box set, there is also ones for the singles and EPs. They're commonly refered to their catalogue numbers, BSCP 1 and BEP 14 respectively. Hope to see you discuss about them soon!
Great suggestion, David. It's one I hope to do soon.
Very intrresting video. I'm from México and my parents bought me a copy of this when I graduated from junior high in 1986, which I believe was the last time they pressed it here. A couple of years ago, my Sister and I gave my nieces a japanese copy for their sweet 16
Glad you enjoyed it, Victor. Thanks for sharing your memories.
Hello Andrew, I recently purchased this box set on your recommendation and sounds superb! I picked the Japanese box with the hopes of dead quiet vinyl and it did not disappoint. I was wondering, since i haven't found a concrete answer online, are the Harry Moss cuttings present across all box sets? Or are they specific to the UK box? Harry's initials aren't in the dead wax on my copies and was wondering if there's a SQ difference between the two. Thanks in advance!
Nice one, Carlos! The 'HTM' cuttings are unique to the UK pressings which were also used in the Swiss set.
Thanks for asking the question I was going to ask. I was wondering the same thing. I also got a Japanese pressing and can't believe how good it sounds. These are some of the best sounding Beatles pressings I have ever heard anywhere. 🤯
Hello Andrew, just managed to find this boxset and I was lucky it's in great condition and local. I've played the first two records and the sound is great. Love me do sounded so much clearer than the U.S rarities and the album tracks off please please me and with the Beatles are the best stereo mixes I've heard. Off chance how much would an individual DMM pressing of the first two Beatles albums cost approx? Fascinating videos Andrew, brilliant.
Nice one, David!
Great video I’ve got this set as well and as you said it’s not to expensive and it’s worth having.
I totally agree!
A little late to the party here, great video! How do I know which country my Australian located box set was pressed in? It doesn't show country of manufacture on the discs or box? Discs state "Manufactured for the Reader's Digest" EMI (logo) 'THE BEATLES BOX' underneath.. it would either be UK, Australia or Japan?? Hope you can help
I have my Mexico box set and I love it! It is a very nice collection.
Hi, my copy is from Columbia S. America. Compared to my brothers UK version, mine has EMI / READERS DIGEST lables and a way heavier cardboard box with thin glossy cardboard sleeves. The sound is excellent. No extras or booklets but a great collection all the same. Thx!
Thanks for the information!
Fantastic again - great stuff 😊👍
Could you do something on the Hollywood Bowl albums ?
Thanks, Stuart. Maybe one day!
I’ve managed to get one of the box sets on eBay for £31.50 ! Thanks for the info on it , because without it I would’nt have considered it an important purchase 👍
@@stuartshire Nice one - you can't lose for that price. Enjoy!
Great video Andrew, I ordered a UK version (Discogs again letting me down) and got a Dutch pressing instead, Harry's initials are not present. Should I be bothered? Is it the same mastering? Sounds pretty good to me and for its excellent condition I was happy with the price paid. Cheers.
Dutch pressings are great - congratulations!
@@Parlogram Phew. Great news. Thank you.
Hi, Andrew ! Love your channel ! I actually like to watch some of your videos multiples times, in order to process all the detailed informations you provide in them ! Anyways, I grabbed a copy of this box a few months ago, after watching your video ; it seems to be a 1986 french pressing, but can’t find much details about it. Did you came across one of these ? Are they sourced from the same UK masters ?
Greetings from France 🇫🇷 👋
Alex.
Hi Alex, I haven't heard the French set but I assume they would have been sourced from UK masters.
Also,a Capitol singles set,as well as an EP set.Yes,the And I Love Her extended mix and hi-hat All My Loving are included,as well as newly remixed Beatles '65 reverbs She's A Woman, and I Feel Fine mixes, taken from the longer UK dry mixes(Stereo),then reverbed, then sonically raised to the same level as the Beatles '65 lp,but sound SO much better!!!and more great mixes included!
I managed to buy a mint copy around 5 years ago.
And was blown away when I put the first record on.
Their early harmonies really stand out.
I was very impressed, the order of the early songs I loved.
Nice to have the Hits blended with album tracks. She's a woman with beatles for sale.
I'm Down with Help and album tracks, I found there were almost 2 sides for help. Shame It was missing Yes it is.
But Rubber soul tracks having day tripper and we can work it out blended is good.
Same as revolver having paperback writer blended was good, but shame they didn't include Rain.
Others were good, I totally agree with you on Hey bulldog instead of all together now.
And the white album definitely was missing Helter skelter.
I mainly listen to the Please Please me to revolver era. Because of the song orders are good.
Like the video 👍
I agree, the running order is nicely done.
Hi Andrew. I own the UK and Japanase versions. The japanese is extremely quiet. I heard the mexican version many years ago and it was terrefic. Being a collector I bought the cassettes too. Due to age they sounded woobly, so I bought a second set, and the result was the same. Not being defeated I rescued them because i relize the problem was the mechanism inside the tapes. I bought new tapes (Maxwell) and I translated the tapes to their new cases, changed all the parts, and voila!, problem solved. The sound quality is excellent, quiet, cleand and direct. They go head to head with the vinyl, not distorsion or jumps. I will encourage owners of the cassettes to try. You will be suprise how good they sound! Thanks.
Great! As always 👏👏👏
Thank you so much 😀
That is right! I own the Mexican version and it sounds amazing and loved the small musical differences on it. Like always cheers to you from Mexico City 🇲🇽. Keep rocking brother nd thank you!
Thanks for watching, Gato. Cheers from Austria!
2:09 realized after rewatching this video that I don’t believe you’ve done a sole video for The Beatles Ballads album? That’d be cool to see
My box set has a mixture of orange and black Parlophone labels. It is the Australian version from WRC and sounds fantastic. Has a big poster as well.
I have just bought this box set, based on this vid, your recommendation - and looking forward to finding out how the better sounding and alternative takes, sound.
(I think mine is a bit of a bargain at about £40)
Great score, Mahatma. Enjoy!
Hello Andrew. Enjoyed your video. I finally bought this set over 20 years ago for £40.00, though it wasn't in the best condition as the box was damaged (the hinge had come right off the box) and a couple of the records were in poor condition. A few years ago, I bought a box in better condition for I think it was £28.00 on ebay and then sold on my first set. I've only played the first record, which skipped on a few tracks but this could be just down to my stylus (it needs replacing) and also the records were dirty with dust and marks on them. So I'm thinking that after a good clean (when I eventually get around to doing so), the records will sound better. I was aware of this set way back in 1980 when it was advertised in the national daily British press (I saw the ad in the Daily Mirror) and thought one day I would like to get it. I don't know if you are aware of that a copy of the original advertisement is shown in the book 'The Long And Winding Road - A History Of The Beatles On Record' by Neville Stannard. It is on page 8 in the revised and updated edition published in 1983 (the first edition from 1982 does not show it). This was for a long time my Beatles Bible as my original copy is worn and battered but I've since bought a first publication and a better condition of the second press. I was also going to comment that you made a couple of errors on some the the versions/mixes that were issued on these records but I saw other people have done so in the comments. I would like to see a comparison video on the Beatles' original EPs/EP Collection that was issued in 1981? Thanks again.
I spent the entire summer of 1981 mowing lawns to make the money to buy an import of this in the USA. I think it was around $70.00 retail at the time. I still own and love it.
Very interesting history! My dad gave it to my mom as a present on cassette format, distributed by Reader’s Digest, later on 2013 I finally got it in LP format, the box contains alternate versions of Thank you girl and Penny Lane
Thanks Mickey! The UK box has the regular mono version of 'Thank You Girl' on it. In which country was your set pressed?
Parlogram Auctions thanks! My box was released in Mexico, I really love that version of Thank you girl which includes more harmonica sounds in the verse “Thank you girl for loving me the way that you do (way that you do)” and also in the final cords of the song. I got my box set from another user but, with some minor details, is in very good conditions
Yes still have mine. in Sydney i got mine through the World Record Club.
Got 2 of these from Japan last year for a mate and myself. One with and one without the obi. Paid about $35US each. Just a steal❤
I would like to hear your opinion of the "Past Masters " Lp/CD,s?
I have a friend -- here in the United States -- who actually found this in a wholesale chain store (not Sam's, maybe Costco??) in New Mexico back when it was in print!
Hi Andrew, Bought an Australian version for A$100 VG+. It's on the Reader's Digest label. Everything seems to be the same as the UK version. Are the Reader's Digest pressings as good as the UK pressings? The sound appears to be good with lots of bass.
Both were pressed by EMI Australia so essentially identical apart from the labels and packaging
I just picked up a decent (Aus) copy of this for $120 AUD in a second hand bookshop ... The box is a bit shabby but the Lps and sleeves are in great condition 😊
The reason i bought it when i saw it is because i watched this video last week!!!
My best guess is that Hey Bulldog enjoyed loads of air time and there were a lot of coverage of it, whereas ATN was much less covered so was added on for the rarity affect.
That mix of "I'm Only Sleeping" was actually first made available on record club pressings of Yesterday And Today. And it was subsequently included on random pressings standard stereo LP (it is common to get "I'm Only Sleeping" and "Doctor Robert" in true stereo, but "And Your Bird Can Sing" in fake stereo --- which my early '70s Apple label pressing is --- or vice versa), and on the cassette.
Some other anecdotes:
"P.S. I Love You" is in fake stereo, just as it was on the stereo Please Please Me LP.
The now-common stereo mix of "This Boy" was created in 1963, alongside the original stereo mix of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" (which has only been released in Australia). I say this because the vocals are panned to the right, with the guitars in the middle (same as IWHYH), and it is a way better mix than any of the mixes made in 1966 for the "Oldies" LP.
The four Long Tall Sally EP tracks are from the U.S. version of Rock 'n' Roll Music, with reversed channels and boosted bass.
The stereo mix of "I'm Down" (as it appears here) had already been released in the U.K...on the original double-LP version of Rock 'n' Roll Music, which did not use George Martin's "reworked" mixes.
The original 1965 stereo mix of "Day Tripper", which had been on 1962-1966 (but not A Collection of Beatles Oldies) is used.
"Paperback Writer" and "Rain" are from the Hey Jude LP (I can tell because "Paperback Writer" has reversed channels); I assume they are from the same source tape as the U.K. version of that album, which had been released in May 1979.
"A Day in the Life" is from 1967-1970, with the intro faded in.
Some of the other White Album tracks have wonky indexing, particularly "I'm So Tired", "Piggies", and "Don't Pass Me By"...I think this is because these songs are supposed to flow right into "Blackbird", "Rocky Raccoon", and "Why Don't We Do it in the Road?", and not be cut off.
I'm pretty certain John's "The Queen says no to pot-smoking FBI members" line at the beginning of "For You Blue" was cut.
According the “The Beatles Recording Sessions “ The stereo mix of “This Boy” was done in 1966. It was actually a mistake. A stereo mix of “Bad Boy” was requested for “A Collection of Beatles Oldies”. However there was a misunderstanding and the engineers prepared a stereo mix for “This Boy”. Once they realized their mistake they shelved the mix for “This Boy” and mixed “Bad Boy” as originally requested. The stereo mix of “This Boy” was first released on a Canadian single in the 70s b/w “All My Loving”.
