      No worries mate
      I'm looking forward to getting into astronomy.
      I've been trying to figure out which scope to get for months now.
      8-12 inch Newtonian or 150 mm refractor.
      Not sure if I will be into astrophotography or not but may get the EQ mount versus Alt-Az .
      A complete SCT would be cool also.
      Gonna try to keep it under
      $ 1250 if I can.
      Way to many choices.
      Let me know if you come across a good used system

Because the 200p came with the big 9x50mm finder I went for a finder adaptor and one of those new ZWO ASI462mc's, as I want a camera for both guiding and planetary/Lunar. Shouldn’t you get better pictures if you take longer exposures with the abrupt shutter? As the movement of the telescope will even out?

    • @Astrolavista
      @Astrolavista  2 года назад

      The initial oscillation caused by the shutter shock 'light paints' the starlight across many pixels on the sensor leaving lines. Yes this does die down and then you are left with stars that look like lines with a brighter dot in the middle... it doesn't work like dithering unfortunately.

Could you please help?

    • @Astrolavista
      @Astrolavista  2 года назад

      Hey Vikas, the 28mm Kelner eyepiece that's included with the 200pds is very low powered giving just 35x magnification. Objects like the planets will look very small indeed. It's probably most suitable as a 'finder' eyepiece to help you locate deep sky objects. The eye position issue could be down to eye relief. It is labelled as a long eye relief eyepiece so does the eyecup twist up so you can place your eye further away from the eye lens? The 200p comes with different eyepieces so I don't have the same 28mm to check. Mine came with a 10mm and 25mm 1.25" which are smaller and have less eye relief.

    • @Astrolavista

      Yes, you actually don't use a lens at all. Most astrophotography is performed with the camera attached directly to the telescope, this is called prime focus astrophotography. You just need a T-ring and T-adapter for your camera to connect the camera to the telescope.

    • @Astrolavista
      @Astrolavista  Год назад

      Hi, I must admit to not taking flats, I'm a bit lazy like that, and although tricky to quantify I would describe the vignetting as nothing out of the ordinary - seems good enough for relatively affordable scope. • @Astrolavista
      @Astrolavista  2 года назад

      Hi Rob, some people do manage to image with the EQ5 Pro and 200p, however on paper you would be over the stated payload (EQ5 Pro states 6.5kg for imaging and the 200p OTA alone weights 8.8kg) Something like the HEQ5 or EXOS2 would be better. The EQ5 has simple bushes for bearings and the stepper motors are half the resolution of say the HEQ5. The 200p can be a bit of a wind sail too and this will effect the subs on an EQ5, it did with the EXOS2 even when it was shielded by the obsy walls. My gut feeling is that the 150p or 150pds would be a better match for the EQ5 Pro. p.s. the EXOS2 is 'like' a EQ5 plus mount, as in an EQ5 with a beefed up tripod, belts drives and good bearings on both axis.

    Thanks a lot,
    g.

      Hi geert, I think I can shed some light on things :) If the Orion 8" Astrograph is the scope I'm thinking of it has a f-ratio of 3.9 which means it's primary mirror has a steeper curve than my Skywatcher 8" f/5. The steeper curve equates to more coma so it's a bit more tricky to correct. The Original Baader coma corrector corrects between f/4 and f/6, and the the revised mk3 version is said to correct down to f/3.5. So it may be that your coma correcter is working at or slightly beyond it's limit. As for collimation, if you have a laser collimator definitely make sure your collimator itself is well collimated (I have a video on this). I also have another video on how to collimate a Newtonian with a laser and one of the tips I give is to use a self centring adaptor. I demonstrate what a difference that makes at the end of the video. I'll link them here for you :)

      @@Astrolavista Thanks for the reply; I do have the Mark3 (which is said to go from F3.5 to 7 - so 3.9 should be ok) I use a farpoint laser collimator and an automatic collimato, but I admit I never star collimate.

      @@geert5811 definitely defocus a star and see if that doughnut shape is concentric :) Also, is the farpoint laser collimatable? Have you checked that it's collimated?

    • @geert5811
      @geert5811 3 года назад

      @@Astrolavista The farpoint can be collimated, but farpoint advises to send it back if it is out of collimation. But I always check before collimation, and it stays very well collimated. So will have to do the star test, or get a refractor (as I don't see the fun in this whole collimation business)

    Might be worth giving Affinity photo 1.9 a try (It's got a 90 day free trial, but only costs £24 right now (one off no subs). It has got an astrophotography stacker (alignment, lights, darks, flats, etc), background gradient remover, and works in 32 bit linear space. James Ritson, and Affinity youtube channels have demos/tutorials on how it works.

    Great video. Really was considering refractors but now I found the explorer range I think I prefer the cost speed and FL! Would this work on an eq6r Pro mount? What guiding camera do you use and does it fit to it? Just realised I was talking to you on first light optics thanks so much for your help. Subscribed.

    How close to the weight limit are you on that mount? It seems a much more affordable option than a heq5. Would you recommend it over a heq5 for a 200p?

    • @Astrolavista
      @Astrolavista  3 года назад +1

      Hey Peter, If its balanced the EXOS2 can handle 8" reflectors just fine, but the mount definitely grumbles a bit if your balance is too far off on Dec or RA I've found. I've owned the HEQ5 Pro in the past and it's a close one. I like that the EXOS2 has belt drives so you don't get quite as much backlash and the EXOS2 doesn't sound like a coffee grinder when it starts slewing like the standard HEQ5, NEQ6's do. The Wifi for the PMC8 on the EXOS2 can take a while to connect sometimes and works better if you temporarily disable your fire wall, but I can't deny it's great value for what it is :) I do think it performs better with lighter scopes, but the same can be said for any mount thinking about it.

    Great stuff! That's a good scope for the money. I have the same mount as you (EXOS II PMC-8) using the serial port with ASCOM, and I must say it tracks really well. BTW some of your affiliate links have got truncated (Eg: stella Lyra ED80 f/10) and just lead to a 404 page.

    Great video, thanks. Do you think you'd get focus in the same way with a full frame camera, like 5D? I don't have a coma corrector (yet), so tried yesterday DSLR + T-Ring + two (out of three, without the lens itself) parts of a Barlow + 1.25'' adaptor in the focuser. Sadly I couldn't get focus at all, no matter how I tried, fully in, fully out, nothing. Any pro tip for me? I'm thinking of getting either 1.25'' T-mount or 2'' T-mount and skip Barlow (and 1.25'' adaptor in case of 2'' T-mount).
    You seem to have success without a coma corrector. What exactly did you use? DSLR + T-Ring + T-mount (which one?)?
    Many thanks.

    • @Astrolavista
      @Astrolavista  3 года назад

      Hi Marcin, yes skip the Barlow :) I use a camera plus T-ring (10mm wide) plus a 2" T-adaptor when not using a coma corrector, and if I want to use the coma corrector I screw it directly into the T-ring, then the T-ring into the camera and skip the T-adaptor.
      My T-adaptor only adds 1mm to the optical train it's similar to this one: www.firstlightoptics.com/adapters/astro-essentials-2-nosepiece-to-male-m48-thread/ref/diyastro/
      You want a 2" version (not the 1.25") if you have at least a 2" focuser to reduce vignetting with large sensors.
      It's all about the position of the sensor (in and out) rather than the size of the sensor. Your 5D will reach focus the same as a crop sensor camera would, only it would show more vignetting (darkening towards the edge of the frame) because there is a limit to the area you telescope can fully illuminate.
      Hope this helps :)

      @@Astrolavista , many thanks. I did find what appears to be T-adaptor in the scope bundle. I've screwed this up on to T-ring. It fits directly in the 200P 2'' focuser. I'll have a go when the sky clears up again! Good point about vignetting, I hadn't thought about this.

      @@MM-uo5vz Yes it was just the camera, T-ring , and the 2" nose piece that slides into the focuser. I didn't have the coma corrector on with the M51 image because I literally meant to be out for half an hour to grab a quick comparison shot. I didn't even use any kind of light pollution filter, and the total exposure time was only 20 minutes (20 x 60 seconds). No flats, darks or bias frames either. Just what the camera give natively at ISO 1600 :) Thanks for the compliment. The image is of course a bit noisy but I was pleased with the level of detail in the actual galaxy I must admit! :D

    I have a Canon EOS 20D. You're right, it is built like a tank. I bought it new back in 2005 for terrestrial photography. Its 8.2 megapixel sensor was pretty cutting edge back then. For the most part, I found it to be a great camera. There is one thing that really lets it down though. It has no sensor cleaning option. Unfortunately, a static charge very quickly builds up on the sensor. It then attracts dust, hair, pollen and basically anything that gets near to it. You'll find it really frustrating, especially with lunar shots. You'll wonder where the huge moon snake came from. It'll be a stray something stuck to the sensor. You'll end up spending a lot of time manually clearing the sensor.

    • @Astrolavista
      @Astrolavista  3 года назад +1

      That sounds frustrating, I'll definitely remember not to use the 20D for Lunar lol I know the 40D has sensor cleaning, a great feature of the more modern DLSRs considering dedicated astro cams have no sensor cleaning either.
