    Best explanation of chord-chord/scale harmony I've ever heard. Of all the possible choices, why did you choose the Mixo b9, b13 over others? And why did you seek a minor chord from the Mixo b9,b13 scale?

      Depends on the ust. You always try to have the guide-tones in your voicing. And include the root if you are not playing with a bass player

    I'll have to watch this a few more times cause I'm in over my head. but could you help me understand why the mixolydian b9 b13 was the chosen scale for the C7? My thinking is the regular c mixilydian already contains all the notes of the C7 chord, so why not use that scale? Again, I'm in over my head, so I know I missed something.

    • @mDecksMusic
      @mDecksMusic  5 лет назад

      C7 in this case is acting as the V7 of the II chord in the key of Eb. The V7/II uses mixo b9 b13 not mixo. It as also possible to use mixo b13.

      @@mDecksMusic This is not really the best explanation. Way too much jargon: I think you've made up an unnecessary term "mixolydian b9 b13 scale"; the so called "V7/ii" is known as a secondary dominate; the chord progress is a common (I-vi-ii-V-I...) progression. You'd get more mileage out of knowing that, depending on the melody note, you can play a diminished (whole-half) scale a half step up from the chord root of the dominate 7-chord in a chart, among other options. In this case your you'd play C#/Db-dim (Db Eb E Gb G A Bb) scale over the C7, which would produce the Cdom7b9 secondary dominant as an upper structure. (The Eb still works because you are in the key of Eb major) The same scale would work when you see Eb7, Gb7, and A7... but ok... I am reading Mark Levine's Jazz Theory book, as well, but I'm not aiming to be a great jazz theorist. I actually want to play jazz piano... Those are two different things.

    How do you pair chord and chord scales ? Why Lydian is a better choice when a major chord is the fourth degree ? Do you have any course about this theory ? Thanks. Fred

    • @mDecksMusic
      @mDecksMusic  4 года назад

      It’s pretty simple for basic chords. When you look at the major scale from the point of view of the 4 you get a Lydian scale. The 2 is Dorian, etc. For other functions the concept is a bit more elaborate and one must considered the type of chord and the scale of the target. We might make a video series on that, it’s a good idea!

    I thought I would be able to do this kind of work with Tessitura!
    Did I buy the wrong app?? I’m a cellist, not a pianist, so I was looking for arpeggios instead of chord names, but I have never used Tessitura effectively *(maybe I was never using it right???)*

    • @mDecksMusic
      @mDecksMusic  5 лет назад +2

      You have the right app. You can use Tessitura for that. If you want to practice arpeggios Tessitura will give you infinite exercises to practice them. We will make a video on how to use Tessitura to practice upper structures for instruments other than piano I think is a great idea.

    Dear bro your teaching is excellent. But in tonal mapping harmony the circles and the chords inside are not clear. How will I copy it. I am not in a position to buy it. If you teach with big diagrams. I am capable of improvising for the rest of the scales. Plz. I appreciate your way of teaching. I am a retired maths master.studied music too.I have implemented easy methods to teach key board and guitar to more than 50 students at a time in the church.thanks dear friend.Earnest.

    I think there has to be an easier way to think about this.

    • @mDecksMusic
      @mDecksMusic  Год назад

      Could be. This is just a concept to explore sounds and voicings. Once you have a good set of upper structures under your playing that you like, you should stop thinking about it and just play. But when you want to add more stock voicings to your playing you can go back to the concept and find more upper structures to learn.
