I think you missed the real issue. He wasn't simply jealous of Topanga, he was upset that she often throws her knowledge, skills and accomplishments in his face.
This is a trait Topanga has had since the show first started. She often belittled Cory and Shawn for their lack of knowledge and often corrected them like she was their teacher.
If you noticed, even during an argument she couldn't help herself but to correct Cory's grammar from "good" to "well". She unfortunately flexes how naturally gifted she is in toxic ways.
While this may have been a little annoying when they were kids, it's likely downright emasculating now that they're married. Notice she says things like "LITTLE project" or "STUPID magazine" even though these are things Cory explained that he's passionate about.
Cory can be very whiny, but he was asking for space to sort this thoughts. Topanga didn't respect that, like she unfortunately doesn't respect a lot of what Cory does. It's subconscious on her part, but her behavior shows that she doesn't respect Cory as a man all that much. That was Cory's real issue.
I've noticed that many people who are saying Cory was completely wrong are women. Which makes me believe that a good amount of women could be doing what Topanga does, and can't see how it effects their men. Instead flipping it as though their men are "jealous" of them or "insecure", while being oblivious to the real issue at hand. And unfortunately I know a lot of men are bottling it up, just like Cory was trying to do in this clip. Which is a little scary

    • @josieviolent
      @josieviolent 2 года назад +79

@@Emperoress I agree, but they could've had this conversation when he was calm and had time to think. A more emotionally vulnerable and genuine conversation without all of the rubble (insults, yelling, demeaning) in the way. The comment above yours by K' the Barbarian goes into the meaning of it all very well.
I also know it's better to give someone space when they ask because I personally have had this issue. It's hard not to say things you don't mean to people you care about when pressured, but people do so anyway for what often feels like their own convenience. It's better to give the person space as they asked. It's healthier and shows you have more respect for them than a curiosity for drama.
He mustered the stability to warn her, which can oftentimes be difficult to do during those moments, and she pressured him anyway. She reaped what she sewed. Yes, the emotions were shared, but in an unhealthy and hurtful way rather than calmly and in a loving mindset and environment between the two. Now that they'll have time to cool down, they'll be able to reconcile and do the latter. :)

When you come together in marriage, it shouldn’t be competition. It’s supposed to be two people coming together as one; at least it’s supposed to be anyway. This show and the character dynamics were so good, little dated perhaps, but good. This is a really messy convo, where both of them say hurtful things that they don’t mean to say, but have a morsel of truth in them. The result is that both of them justifiably look like victim and aggressor at once. That’s a super realistic depiction of what relationship fights boil down to. It would have been way too easy for them to just have Corey blow up with Topanga purely the voice of reason. Instead, she says and does things that you can see are boxing him in, and then says he can’t do it, which she immediately regrets, as he understandably blows up.

I think people in the comments are missing the point of this argument. This isn’t Cory being jealous of Topanga. This is Cory feeling inadequate next to her. He knows he is being unreasonable which is why he tries to avoid the argument altogether at first. He points out how Topanga excels at everything she does while he struggles and instead of picking up that he needs validation and support from her in that moment she feels attacked and instead argues back which is what sets Cory off. Cory knew he was being unreasonable and instantly regretted everything he said as soon as she left knowing that everything was about his own self-esteem and not actually anything Topanga had done. I don’t think either were entirely in the wrong or in the right here. People aren’t perfect and don’t always have a calm and open discussion about their feelings. Sometimes people get angry and lash out at loved ones, especially when they don’t understand what they are feeling themselves.

This condescending attitude can feed into his insecurities, even if she meant well or by accident, and Topanga should be more sensitive. Am I saying Topanga should be walking on eggshells, or it's not Cory's ultimate responsibility to work on his issues? No, Topanga should feel self-confident + ambitious and not become less to placate Cory (which I don't think he expected). I'm saying this episode shows that Topanga needs to be more emotionally supportive toward Cory. That's just being a good partner because being a good partner isn't just challenging to be better, but also supporting and letting your partner have a minute to breathe. Furthermore, even in this ep, she corrects his grammar instinctively, without forethought, although she does regret it but not enough to back off or get his message. So, it's not as if Topanga is celebrating her success in a non-braggy way or feeling self-confident, then Cory felt insecure as a by-product or was trying to undermine her/degrade her accomplishments. Cory is usually very supportive of Topanga. An example is where Topanga shares her pro-feminist view in class, and Cory totally supports her openly. He doesn't ignore it, undermine thru criticism, or play devil's advocate. I can't say the same for Topanga, although again, she does have some moments she can caring toward Cory.

Topanga wasn’t ready to receive it, which is why she became so defensive and literally used what he said as a weapon against him. This is what made him say the last part, because she confirmed his insecurity, instead of simply acknowledging it.

I love this scene. Mostly because I think Ben acted the hell out of this and his inflection is spot on of someone actually in a fight. But also as someone with an unconventional job that often gets dismissed as a side hustle or something that’s just for now, I completely understand him. When you have bad days, you don’t want to hear how it’s okay because it’s just something small. Those bad days are huge to you when you’re in them. And then to get corrected on grammar when your partner is literally telling you that’s a reason they feel insignificant is wildly infuriating and straight poking the bear. I’m not defending what he said, but when someone tells you to leave them alone because they know they’ll say something they regret, don’t go on to push. But I love the way they later resolved everything, even if they had to sit in silence for a while to get there.

Topanga when she asked Corey what was bothering and he told to leave him alone or he'll say something he'll regret, she should have said "Okay, but we need to talk about this when you're ready." If she left it at that they could have a more proper discussion about Corey's feelings instead of becoming a full blown insult match, which Topanga got involved in as much as Corey. I really think Topanga was in the wrong here. I mean, in a sense they both were wrong, but when Cory was expressing how she was always shoving her perfection in his face and went and corrected him like that. He was expressing a genuine doubt and feeling and she proved him right. In that single instant she proved him right and I think anyone would have lashed out after that. They both said hurtful things, but Corey was pushed, after he had warned her he wanted to be alone to cool off and not say anything he would regret. Because he knew he would regret every word, he consciously knew that whatever he would say in that moment would only hinder his relationship, something he didn't want. But Topanga pushed, went out of her way to prove him right, dismissed his feelings as absurd after proving him right and called him a loser. I think that this clearly is a sign that Topanga was in the wrong, because she had dismissed his feelings from the get go. Women aren't always in the right people. ….um you can communicate like an adult. CHILDREN can express themselves out of anger and frustration and be forgiven because they don’t know how to regulate or communicate their emotions. But as a fully functioning adult, if you’re yelling stuff like “your big fat mouth” you need to take a breather and walk away cause that is NOT how you talk to someone else. I’m not perfect…I get angry…but I’ve learned to hold my anger, analyze it in my free time and then clearly articulate what is making me upset. I feel like Instead of lashing out, which isn’t healthy, he could’ve just said, I feel like my accomplishments are frequently being overshadowed in our relationship. And I want to celebrate all the things that you do because you are amazing but I feel like I don’t get a chance to feel that way too. And it’s not your fault that you’re being successful and I’m going to work hard so I can feel that way too…but in the meantime it’s frustrating and you’re probably picking up on my frustration. Lashing out with venom isn't justified simply because you're upset, nor does it give you the right to unload all your bitterness onto your partner simply because you need to "express yourself" then expect them to just shrug it off because you didn't mean it. Words hurt. Especially coming from someone you love. Meanwhile, although Cory and Topanga may have not meant everything they said, there are seeds of truth in their lashing out.
Both parties are guilty, and both have a lot to apologize for. Topanga should have given him space when Cory repeatedly warned her he was already upset, but Cory was also remaining in the vicinity instead of fully removing himself from the situation and chose to engage in the altercation. Not only that, but spitting out whatever bitter bile he had built up while still in an angry state of mind is bad. Period.
Aggressive expression used to simply hurt your partner so they feel as negatively as you do is an unhealthy form of communication that can severely hurt a relationship. Topanga is equally guilty of instigating the fight further. Neither were willing to "lose". They wanted the last word, to top the other, if they felt bad then dammit so was the other. So it just built up and built up until finally it overflows, and in the end both of them are hurt and nothing has been accomplished.
They're also newlyweds, and while they've been a couple for a while, adjusting to a new relationship dynamic can cause a lot of big blow ups. But in the end they both cooled down and talked things out as maturely as they could and came to apologize.

The writers of this show did a great job of showing how much the characters actually reflect and resemble alot of who they are, and where their personalitiew and commonalities come from. In some weird and twisted way, when Cory gets upset he raises his voice to let Topanga know he is being serious. That's exactly how his father (Alan Matthews) gets when he is upset and wants to be heard and understood.

In a relationship it's not about measuring who gave up more for who. If you're going into marriage with the idea what you made your husband a favor by giving anything up for him, you'll end up either resentful or entitled. She didn't listen to him when he felt hurt and needed to be left alone, she insulted him in public and then acted like she was the hurt one. In marriage you are there to love and support this person, even in their insecurities, especially where they fall short. She was absolutely wrong, and if giving up Harvard for her husband was such a tremendous sacrifice that it grants her the right to insult him in front of their friends or forever hold it against him she shouldn't have done it in the first place. For his sake and her's she should've gone to Harvard and left him alone. A marriage where you're measuring to see who does or did more ( be it in things like these, in work, in chores, with the kids) than the other or who lost more to be with the other is not only never going to work, but it's going to cause the two people huge amounts of pain until it falls apart

Also, if we are talking about insulting the other in front of friends it was Cory that was first and far more disrespectful than her by resorting to insults, so i think your argument it flawed because it is devolving into a different issue entirely.

When someone is angry with me and says to me “ please leave me alone before I say something I’m going to regret”..... that’s EXACTLY what I want and probably need to hear so I don’t back off. What that means is that person is angry enough that the filter will not block them from telling me the truth about how they really feel.
Yes it may either damage or cost us the relationship, but I’m better off knowing the truth.
How many times do people blow up in a fight and say the worst shit to someone and then later on they say I really didn’t mean that. The fact is, yes you did. It’s just that the anger finally gave you the balls to say what you really wanted to say. When we are angry, when we are drunk, when we are vulnerable, we are the most honest.
Why do we tell somebody how much we can’t stand them when we are angry. Why do we call our ex when we are drunk?
Because the filter is gone in both of those cases. The filter often blocks the truth. Before it goes from our brain to our mouth, the filter makes us think if we really want to say it and what the consequences are but we’re not concerned with consequences when we are angry or drunk.
So whatever she said to him and whatever he said to her right here was honesty.

We wouldn’t have this fight publicly as Topanga and Corey did, but marriage ain’t always roses and sunshine. To have a successful marriage you learn and absorb things about your spouse and hopefully don’t make the same mistakes down the road. Marriage is also about acceptance, which means you accept everything about them (not abuse) for who they are. If you can’t do that, then marriage may not be for you. It’s also about forgiveness because you’re going to have arguments and disagreements because you’re two human beings learning how to be apart of each others space. You’re going to say things in the heat of the moment, but you can always be an adult and apologize and vice versa. Corey and Topanga were very young when they got married so I’m sure a lot of their growth and maturity will come from their marriage.

Because I promise you, you will disagree on something eventually .
I’m not saying be a jerk and try to deliberately fight with the person, but you should be bringing up tough subjects that could end up sparking a disagreement .
If they turn it into a fight, you’re gonna have to learn how to work through things together, so this doesn’t happen because years and years and years of this kind of fighting will destroy your marriage.
If you can’t learn how to work out something and speak maturely about it without resorting to the tactics in this clip , you remain very immature.
Both my husband and I did this for a long time . Then I wise up, but my husband didn’t and for a decade I tried and tried and tried to get us to try to discuss this agreements more maturely. We were fighting even over the most ridiculous things now that look back.
    I finally had it this fall/winter .
I basically sat down this past week after our last fight again and told him I was sorry for and what I wanted to see and how our marriage cannot continue as it is.
I asked him to rebuild it with me to lay aside the individuals so we could work as a team, and as a we…. I asked him if he was ready to jump in 100% or was he out?
I had already laid out what wasn’t acceptable anymore .
    Luckily, he was in .
And now, instead of watching TV and ignoring each other on our phones, we are taking each evening to layout how we can rebuild our marriage, and set a new foundation with new rules and new ways to approach everything .
I really think these things need to be brought up before marriage. It’s sad that it took us 17 years to figure this crap out.
I hope if we figure this out that maybe we can find a way to help others with what we’ve learned

everyone saying how Topanga was wrong here and Corey was more right but i don't see that at all. Maybe if they weren't married, or if they hadn't been together so long cory would be right. But they're married here. Its fine to need space, yes, but its pretty clear that Topanga here is worried about whats wrong - that causes anxiety and of course she would pursue him saying "i dont like that you cant talk to me about this" because in marriage youre supposed to be a unit and discuss things. Sure Corey doesnt seem ready to discuss at that moment, but he could at least give her some reassurance or a little bit of anything really. You can't just say "i dont want to say something I'll regret" because saying that just causes the other person to think "oh, so they're thinking really bad things about me now. Why? What happened? What did i do?" And if its in marriage, of COURSE thatd just prompt more questions and curiosity.
"Youre better at pookie-pook than me too"
"topanga, if you were as smart as your ace streak says you are, you would know to leave me alone right now"
he says these things to his wife whilst telling her to drop it and walk away, because he doesnt want to start anything, but hes already started it with those comments and hes making it her job to be the bigger person in the moment and leave even saying "You leave I win" at the end when she finally leaves.
Its fine to need and ask for space. But if you are asking or needing space, you shouldn't be so passive aggressive about it, avoiding explaining anything at all whilst simultaneously implying that its the other persons fault that youre acting like this.
I just feel hes being kind of childish in the way he is expressing himself and handling his emotions. Which is fine, because everyone has those moments and being married is about sticking through it and working it out. I just disagree with everyone saying that topanga is the one in the wrong here. Sure, you can say she isn't owed anything reasoning or explanation for why he wants space, which is valid, but you can't tell me that cory isn't already being passive aggressive before he even asks for space. He walks away after making a comment like "youre better than me at that too" in a tone that is obviously meant to be snarky and not in the nice playful way. Then he asks for space, after already poking at topanga and implying that shes the problem. Thats not fair to her for him to start something, for a reason that she doesnt know yet, and then walk away and tell her she needs to leave him alone and give him space, whilst implying shes the issue, but not telling her what the issue he has with her is, just saying he doesnt want to say something he'll regret.
I feel like he never would have had a conversation with her about how hes feeling and what bothers him if she hadn't pushed here. Because he was implying he'd regret talking about how some of her actions make him feel, which he ends up regretting, but not because of the reasoning of the conversation, but because of the way he went about the conversation.
a simple "hey, im sorry, i need some time to myself right now to figure out what exactly im feeling before I discuss it with you, can you give me some space for now?" Or "hey, im not exactly sure what's sparking these emotions right now, could you maybe give me some space to figure it out?" Or "im not ready to discuss this yet, I promise ill talk to you once ive got it figured out, you dont need to worry about it" Or "sorry, could we discuss this later? i dont think I'm ready for this at the moment"
any of those or other things he couldve said - but mainly its just the tone he uses and the little jabs he throws while asking for space that are the problem. Honestly he seems more to imply here that he doesnt want to talk with her about any of this like ever. Which is the wrong attitude to have. hes shutting her out here he really only implies to her that they dont need to talk about it because he'll regret it. Even if that discussion is definitely necessary in their relationship going forward because otherwise those feelings he had would just grow and grow and fester with him growing to just become annoyed with her, whilst she remains anxious and curious about whats happening with him and not being able to ask or anything because he would push her away saying he would regret talking.
    idk just my thoughts.
i think they both are kinda wrong here but topanga is DEFINITELY not any more in the wrong than corey. But this fight really isnt that big of a deal anyways, it just could have been handled much better

This! All of this! Even if i dont want to talk about something i tell my husband anyways.. Its better to get it out of the way.. Rip it off like a band-aid.
Especially if its about him.. In this scenario coreys problem was with topanga so he should've let her know she was the problem.. Its better to let it all out.. Because whose to say he wouldn't have blown up on her at a random time later? Whose to say " giving him space would have even helped him not to say anything he'd regret". Hell whose to say he would've told her at all🤷‍♀️

I’ve been in the same situation with my husband and I need the space to register my emotions properly. Even married YOU as the other spouse can’t decide if the other is ready to talk. I found that most times I tried to finish an argument without some space I completely shut down or end up saying I regret. Which way is better? Taking some time apart to have a productive conversation or what just happened?

Perfect example of how there is no "winner" in marital arguments. The moment you start trying to win a fight against your spouse, you both lose.

This is deep. The thing is with BOTH of them. In a relationship it’s need communication and they didn’t know it.
How do I know? I’ve been married for 12 years. I am 30 now and oh boy there were days like this, the thing was my husband didn’t say anything he kept everything in and I would get upset because he is a man and they don’t normally say anything until arguments like this. A lot of miscommunication on how I felt and how I worded things same with my husband.
Well 10 years into the relationship we finally understand that we needed to communicate with each other, tell each other how we are feeling and work it out. We forgive each other and grew out of our big heads and to this day we have small arguments here and there and never this big and we are happier. But people COMMUNICATION is key. You BOTH have to be able to get the stick out of your ass and admitted to doing and saying wrong too.

First of all, I'm loving these throwback BMW clips. I honestly don't think Corey is in the wrong in this particular clip. Was he wrong in general? Yes, he needed to be more supportive of Topanga. HOWEVER, in this clip he said very clearly that he wasn't in the mood and didn't want to talk about it because he didn't want to say something that he would regret and Topanga kept pushing him and pushing him and got her feelings hurt. Should he control himself, yes. But he didn't lash out of nowhere.
