Do the Agents of Shield Time Travel Correctly?

  • On this episode of Comic Movie-10, the Kane brothers discuss season five of Agents of Shield, specifically focusing on the shows ability to time travel, and whether or not it was handled correctly.
    Joe and Dan question whether the time travel throughout the season was successful, or if it left viewers with holes in the story. To start, the brothers analyze the fact that time travel allowed Daisy Johnson the opportunity to fix the world, because she had previously been viewed as a destroyer. Time travel helped her to see her mistakes, and correct them. Similarly to Daisy’s character, General Talbot’s character flipped from being a good character to a villain.
    In addition, time travel caused Coulson’s death, yet viewers see him make the ultimate sacrifice by giving his life in order to save society. This was possible due to the knowledge Coulson obtained as a result of time travel. The brothers also explain how time travel throughout the season saved the lives of both Robin’s mother and Mack, yet as a result, Fitz was killed, where he originally should have survived. Yet, the topic of Fitz brings up some interesting ideas, as Joe and Dan point out. In the very beginning of the season, Fitz freezes himself in order to jump into the future. It can be argued that he is actually still frozen rather than dead, and will reappear.
    Overall, the Kane brothers explain that the season wrapped without a cliffhanger, as it typically does. This leads to the questioning of whether there will be a sixth season of the show. Let the Kane brothers know what you think of the time lapses in the show, and whether you agree or disagree with the strengths and weaknesses they have found. Leave your comments, questions, and opinions in the comments section after watching, and as always, be sure to tune in next time to the newest episode of Comic Movie-10!

    My biggest problem with how they did time travel is the fact that they introduced the Time Loop... That was based on the concept that time is fixed and cannot be changed. But then they got enough knowledge from the future to make different decisions and change the future.
    If the loop concept wasn't there, then that would make sense. They went into the future, learned what they need to change, and changed it. But the loop suggests that even after learning what they learned in the future, any attempt to change it just leads them to the same future...
    So what changed? Why could they break the loop this time, but not the time before? If the loop could be broken, why was there a loop in the first place? They basically showed 2 different, contradictory rules of time travel, without an explenation of how they can work together...

      Andrey Krichevsky that is an interesting point. Why bother with the loop theory if it wasn’t relevant in the grand scheme. Although this could be the fear of the impending loop without knowing for sure if it was concrete.

      The problem is they didn't have the loop as a theory. They actually showed that it happened by having future Yo-yo specificaly state that she lived through it, and by having a flashback of Fitz saying they already tryed and failed to change the future.
      And the loop does have a point. It's a plot divice to keep the audience guessing wether the team can succede or not. Without it, success is a given. They saw the future, the know what to avoid, Robin predicted success, so no problem. But with the loop, that logic already failed at least once, so there's actually a bigger chance that they fail. BUT, it also makes the time travel rules make no sence...
      I think that if they actually kept the time loop ONLY as a theory, and didn't show that it actually happened, but still kept all the moments where the team's actions seem to lead to the bad future anyway (Yo-yo loosing her arms, Destroyer of Worlds project, the footege of Daisy leaving the Quinjet), then they could keep the same tention of uncertainty, without breaking the time travel rules. Because in the end, there would BE no loop, the characters and us would just THINK that there might be...

      By the way Robin - i have a problem with her powers too... How meny timelines does she see? In the show she seems to see 2 timelines. The one where the world ends and the one where it doesn't (since she has drawings of the end of the world, but also a drawing of Coulson and May on the beach).
      But why 2? Makes more sence to me that she would either see one timeline, or all of them.
      But i guess if she only sees one timeline, then there is no prophecy of SHIELD saving the world. And if she sees more then 2, then it's just too much of a mess...
      Having said that, if she only saw the bad future timeline, and her entire role was to predict, and therefore cause the team to travel to the future, without telling them they can actually succede in changing it, that could have enhanced the whole percieved loop tention, and have the team actually struggle to save the world DECPITE a prophecy that it ends. And make Robin's powers make more sence in the proccess...

      Andrey Krichevsky That all seems to be the confusing conundrum. Robin had been predicting multiple outcomes but her clarity is what was in question. They still needed to decipher her drawings which could be misleading themselves. We only knew as an audience two possible outcomes but I’d like to believe there were more. Here’s one major loophole that We mentioned in the episode that Fitz is still out there heading in the direction of this loop. All of the events could still lead in the direction to set them back into that original loop. I’m going to just hang it out there they shouldn’t have tried to tackle time travel without having every single possibility covered before.

      I don't know if i agree with that last point... Usually when you subscribe to the notion of "do it perfectly, or not at all", things just don't get done... It's probably easier for us to disect what they wrote in hindsight then it was to actually structure it all from scratch. Especially considering they write shows like this as they go, and not in advance... They probably thought they did a good job, and only later started seing the flaws, as you usually do when you create something. And overall, the season was still quite good.
      About Robin, i also thought that she might have seen other timelines and we just didn't get to see the drawings or make sense of them. Poor girl. Living your whole life out of order would mess you up enough. I can't even imagine what it would be like to live all the lives you possibly could. Out of order!

    I don't understand why people have a tough time with this. We will say the AOS universe we are watching is X. The team from X travel to the future and meet up with Fitz whom is taking the long way, therefore he is not AOS universe X Fitz so he needs to be AOS universe Y Fitz from a previous loop. When they return to earth it is AOS X, plus AOS Y Fitz, meanwhile AOS X Fitz is still in cryosleep. Therefore when AOS Y Fitz dies, you can still seek out AOS X Fitz and defrost him to be part of the team again. In refrence to Deak, he should still exist, it is like jumping from one parallel line to another. Once the move is made, nothing from the previous line can affect what happens in the other. Just my humble opinion.

      Gothmolg that was well explained. You explained it better than we did let alone the mysterious way AOS did. Im looking forward to see more in the next season. They are going to have to solve the Coulson terminal sentence. I feel that the show wouldn’t be sustainable without him. Obviously by your description we will be seeing Fitz again and most likely Deak. Thanks for watching. Grab more content at hecklerkane.com

      But if they bring back X Fitz, then Fitz won't be able to reach to the future then the Team couldn't come back to present.
      And on the other hand let's say that they bring back X Fitz. And they will also have the corpse of the Y Fitz. It doesn't make any sense. I loved the AoS' explanation of time. I really hoped that they wouldn't disorder their "time is fixed" rule and maybe show us that they are in diffrent universe than the cinematic universe (but same events took place untill infinity war. When infinity war took place in the mcu , at AoS' universe earth destroyed)
      My grammer might be bad. sorry.

      The Fizt from timeline X could not be the Fitz they met in the future because in timeline X the world never cracks. Therefore it has to be a Fitz from a different timeline.

      The way I see it, the two timelines diverge during the Battle of Chicago, and exist in parallel to each other. The Cataclysm timeline has its own version of cryosleep Fitz, but the present timeline has an identical version who exists separately. After the time lines split at the Battle of Chicago, present timeline SHIELD can retrieve cryosleep Fitz without affecting the Fitz in the Cataclysm timeline, since they now exist in parallel to each other.

    I was very satisfied with the way they handled time travel, even though there were some loopholes at least they tried something different, you know the idea that time is fixed in a loop and such, staying consistent with the spacetime episode from S3 I don't often see that in sci fi, so I give all the credits to the writers for pulling it off and keeping it interesting.

    It's Enoch, I'm thinking that every decision SHIELD made in the finale broke the time loop. Mainly Coulson not taking the serum since him dying was the event that pushed things in motion. Good discussion.

      ten410 thank you for the Enoch reminder. 👍 I’m curious how they will move forward with Coulson dying for the next season. Thanks for watching.

      Yes, Coulson not taking the serum is probably the turning point, but also, Fitz knowing he survives and Mack and Polly don't made him go to save them which ended up killing him, so that future knowledge influenced his decision...I am however confused why in previous loops the characters didn't make the same choices, like did Coulson only now think not to take it? I think maybe in previous loops he bucked to pressure but in this one he decided that it's his duty to die and the team must accept it, hence his speech about how they are all heroes because they have to deal with losing others but still do their job...I loved that part.

    The way i see it. There is Future Fitz and Present Fitz. Future Fitz is the one they brought back. Present Fitz is the one that left with Enoch on episode 5. When they come back, present Fitz is still in space while Future Fitz is with them. But now, future fitz is Dead. So Deke probably stopped existing.

    • @hecklerkanecreations
      @hecklerkanecreations  6 лет назад

      Clancy Nsimba ok so if Fitz is pulled from cryogenic capsule before the rescue in the future, won’t that stop the events of the rescue? If Deke stops exiting that would mean that the steps they took are in one continuous time line Effectively they would all disappear back into the future if Fitz doesn’t make it there.

    • @dmho1976
      @dmho1976 6 лет назад +1

      No. Deke’s grandfather is not Future Fitz but Prior Fitz who lived through Earth cracking apart.

    • @hecklerkanecreations

      dmho1976 so the question is how are they going to retrieve him and won’t that nullify the rescue he made in the future?

    • @dmho1976
      @dmho1976 6 лет назад +1

      No. Time is not linear but multiverse variable. Earth has already been saved. No point for Fitz to wake up 90 years later on an intact earth.

      How to retrieve is a question for season six. Enoch is in space and Noah was killed so there isn’t any clear option to contact Enoch.
