Natalia Gutman discussed this in her 1999 interview with Tim Januf. "In 1990 I began using a baroque bow when playing baroque music and I now have a 5-string cello that I use for the Sixth Suite. I have found a new range of expressive possibilities and articulations with my baroque bow. ... I'd like to think that I'm playing in a manner that is more authentically baroque than I did before.."
I'd never heard Gutman play Bach before I saw this, but I love her sensitivity to the harmonies, and IMO she uses a perfect sound for these pieces, plus the variation she uses during the repeats makes it a very interesting listen. Too many players don't use repeats in Bach to add anything, they just repeat what they've just played without any kind of variation.
I knew a cellist who used to hold his bow like that as well. He said it felt like he had more control over it. If you hold it closer to the center, then your arm doesn't have to arc as far when changing strings, and it is easier to have more pressure on the strings when playing with the end of the bow. I don't know if she has the same reasons, but as you said, she obviously knows what she is doing. Stunning piece of music.
I love Natalia Gutman & I love Bach. She will be playing here in Istanbul this month. But shouldn't get excited, we ordinary people are never allowed in these fantastic concerts: by far too expensive to afford. Music is not just for the rich!
You will I think like her next point: "[Rostropovich] ... does not believe that one must strive to play in a baroque manner. He believes that you should bring Bach to our time, not go back to Bach's time. I don't want to play Bach in his way, but when I listen to him I deeply respect that he's playing Bach with all his heart and that he does so with great conviction. Fortunately, there's no right and wrong in music, so I can enjoy performances both by him and Anner Bylsma."
@John Nikolatos I think he's referring to the f# at the end of the bar where it returns in G major, which is the descending 7th, which takes to the VI grade (E minor), but, talking to @Martin King, it's kinda hard to explain why it makes you have goosebumps... Maybe studying music theory would help :)
I can't see why she is holding the bow near the middle. What does it give to her or to the music? I can't imagine I would play like this. Perhaps, if it were an authentic baroque bow...
You said "how dare they." I said it's something they can't control, so they aren't "daring" to do it. I'm sure they're embarrassed and would rather be listening than coughing.
Since you do not respect modern day musicians that do not follow the performance practice of those days do not expect anyone to respect the ones that do.
Your comments read as if you were completely fixated on finding mistakes. I wonder why anyone would be so petty and incapable of appreciation. I feel sorry for this person...
i really disagree with you because yo-yo ma makes what he is into music. he makes the music his own. like you said she did keep to the manuscript but it does not make it any interesting keeping it the same. people should interprate the music how they want
She does not play better than Yo Yo Ma. It is musically restrictive because she follows the structure and manuscript closely. Music is spontaneous not predictable.
Meh. Not a very sterling performance, certainly not a very evocative one. Though it may sound cliche, Yo Yo Ma's recording remains my favorite of this prelude and most suites. With her, though I can grasp her phrasing, everything seems to fall flat and comes out rather clumsy. But then again, I don't really like Rostropovich's style of playing either, so I guess I may just disagree with the school she comes from. Bach is hard to rough up, though.

Baroque cello didn't have an endpin and cello were held tightly with the legs. She just messed around

It looks as beautiful as it sounds.
My heart sank into my soul.
Ethereal Bliss.
Couldn’t say it better..
She has such a wonderful bowing technique I absolutely love it . . . I'd love to take lessons from her and learn some of her bowing secrets!!!
So "wonderful" technique 😂😂😂
Omg... see on 0:31 she ewen can't control the bow and played wrong string
@@chagkruzart7695 Always has to be negative people like you.
This is going to be my cello teacher when she get old. I can just feel it
wonderful bowing technique
Natalia is a goddess of the Cello simply beautiful
This music lifts my soul to the loftiest of lofts.
Beautiful playing.

Her comment about "conviction" is characteristic. Richter once famously said that Natalia Gutman was the embodiment of integrity in art.
Her's technique of the bow is intersting... the sound is Very soft and quiet... Amazing cellist and excelent performance
I think it's a baroque bow, which is used with a different hold.
I love Natalia Gutman & I love Bach. She will be playing here in Istanbul this month. But shouldn't get excited, we ordinary people are never allowed in these fantastic concerts: by far too expensive to afford.

Zeynep A. I'm just an ordinary teen boy and I often visit classical concerts, they aren't that expensive are they?
+1

Great rendition of a beautiful piece.
Good job...so sweet...I like it from SINGAPORE
It is like her fingers are dancing the most delicate dance.
Exquisite. Brava!
muito bom parabéns pela interpretação
Lovely playing.
Beautiful
MAESTRA!! ,👏👏👏
Simply amazing
Harmonic.
this makes me want to sit up straight
Just amazing!
In this song at 0:20 where the note at the end of the phrase is slightly different makes me get goosebumps, I wish I understood more why that is.
@John Nikolatos I think he's referring to the f# at the end of the bar where it returns in G major, which is the descending 7th, which takes to the VI grade (E minor), but, talking to @Martin King, it's kinda hard to explain why it makes you have goosebumps... I have to agree dimakorg108 . . . Natalia is very good at putting some Bach in my ears, and Bach is amazing.
She is using a baroque bow, which is held more towards the middle than modern bows.
Amazing. Wow.
BTW, her cello sounds really smooth. I wonder what strings she uses :-)
I love it!
"If it isn't Baroque, then don't fix it."😂...sorry... but, I HAD TO!☺️
Beautiful. Love movement three
Quintessential artist.
Dat bowhold
Barroco style. True mastery
Very good.
Seriously, that bow is an extension of her hand
Brilliant
Incroyable
Minunat!
She's great
what an interesting bow!
like número 1000 !😎
Bravo!!
People don't cough on purpose, really hard to hold a cough
Precious!
I think Bach would be amused by the discussions of the “correct “ way to perform his music.
bravissima!
How do you know how musicians played in.those days? No one knows for sure
You're pulling facts out of your ass. There are numerous period treatises written by musicians on musical aesthetic and performance.
Let the grandma do the talking!
she tells the story with her cello
great
no, she are playing correctly, exactly what it is written
👌🏻
GO! OLD LADY!! GO!!! XD
wow!
GUTMAN STYLE
But I love how she played :3

the tip looks like a barouque bow but the frog looks more modern. maybe its a mix?
what a mom
How dare random people cough in the middle of this performance!? Anyway, she's really good! Better than ME I bet.
I can't see why she is holding the bow near the middle. What does it give to her or to the music? I can't imagine I would play like this. Perhaps, if it were an authentic baroque bow...
Natalia Gutman
You said "how dare they." I said it's something they can't control, so they aren't "daring" to do it. I'm sure they're embarrassed and would rather be listening than coughing.
Savage.
Music to God's Ears...
Hola
Since you do not respect modern day musicians that do not follow the performance practice of those days do not expect anyone to respect the ones that do.
Amazing ? ! Really ?!?
On a certain point of view, it is ...
Very liberal with rhythm and tempii...
Student of Rostropovich
Her posture affect her playing.
I never said they coughed on purpose...
She's far better than Yo Yo Ma. Her performance is, at the least, more truthful to the manuscript, and to the musical era from which it originates.
she play a wrong note :/
1:48
she played B instead of Bbemol
NEKSRUDE that’s how it is🤦🏻♂️
But that's not a modern bow... are you saying that it is a transition bow?
Jay W. Stop being an utter fool by thinking that musicians that followed the performance practice of those days interpreted exactly the same way.
Surely you're joking
Why she grimacing with the bow?🤦♂️ Cheap trick, she ewen can't control the bow 0:31
Your comments read as if you were completely fixated on finding mistakes.
I wonder why anyone would be so petty and incapable of appreciation. I feel sorry for this person...
Wonderful but could work on the posture
Jalea Dittrich She has problems walking, probably the same problem is impacting her posture.
I doubt she has problems with her posture, she is just in her 70s
Every cello teacher in the world watching this just clinched their butt cheeks in horror.
Yes and yet she's (ok was in her time) in the top 5 world players. Go figure that :)))
maxcohen... why is that? I didn't. she's awesome... i don't get your comment.
Most likely due to her posture, bow hold, fingerings, bow strokes, and other minuscule mishaps music snobs will with out a doubt point out.
I too would like to know why.
Because she s old ... she choose the easyest technique to do not get hurt and cramp . I guess
i really disagree with you because yo-yo ma makes what he is into music. he makes the music his own. like you said she did keep to the manuscript but it does not make it any interesting keeping it the same. people should interprate the music how they want
Why is she holding her bow like that? I mean, she's a professional so obviously she k owns what she's doing, but why...?
She does not play better than Yo Yo Ma.
It is musically restrictive because she follows the structure and manuscript closely.
Music is spontaneous not predictable.
She's playing authentically to how it was written by Bach. Yo yo Ma plays it in a modern virtuoso style... you cannot fairly compare.
shorter the bow, shorter!!
Meh. Not a very sterling performance, certainly not a very evocative one. Though it may sound cliche, Yo Yo Ma's recording remains my favorite of this prelude and most suites. Beautiful
