Nice job done Peter ( you the Man ) Best part of your character is to impart such useful knowledge about Bonsai to the rest of the world 🌎 . u the man again at all times .
I've just started watching all your videos through this lock down. I love them. I'll be goin to the garden center tomorrow to look at purchasing my first bonsai. Thanks for your videos. From Australia.
Certainly a round pot tree to me Peter, I would rotate the front each week. The sign of the master teacher is speaking while working, so many stop and talk, then work, their videos seem long and laborious and you cringe to watch them twice, never with your video, I have watched many over and over. Thank you for creating this wonderful legacy that I am sure will instruct for generations.
Those before and after pictures really do wonders to accentuate your purpose of these pruning videos. And the HD pictures you add really capture some amazing, inspiring visuals that you sometimes don't catch during the videos in motion. Amazing job!
The two words that echoed in my mind as I watched you reveal the heart of that tree, "Merlin's Lament," have inspired me to begin writing again. I hope I can one day manage to find such a prize. Thank you for sharing!
I seen my neighbor removing small cedars form his front yard on my way to work one day and wished I could have grabbed one. They trunks were pretty big. I am going to have to keep my eye out as winter is coming soon and people remove these things around now. Thank you for this video, you have transformed something hideous into something beautiful.
I love your videos on bonsai creating, it’s giving me the confidence to try making one for myself, your privet bonsai looks amazing, thank you for your teaching.
What an awesome bonsai you have made, sir! I'm watching your videos every day now. I think Herons needs to get you a Bonsai superman costume, like the original costume, but in greens and browns and with a logo with a B. I guess that wouldn't be in keeping with the tasteful nature of your website, or your demeanor, but you are the Superman of Bonsai to me :)
Beautiful work mate. Although here in Australia I wouldn’t be putting my hand into voids in the trunk like that. My Ficus has a large hole in the trunk which is a perfect home for all spiders, snakes and lizards. As soon as I evict one species, another takes its place. I’ve learned to wear gloves now.
Privets make surprisingly good garden trees. The training does take several years as Peter demonstrated but it is absolutely worth it. Especially when the tree is flowering and it is spreading its pungent smell.
Privet is a type of tree?! Twenty five years I thought privet was a British word for privacy. “Privet Drive” being a dead end with private local traffic. Wild! What an idiot. So Privet Drive is named after the hedges. Interesting.
You've worked another wonder...amazing trunk in there. I learn so much from watching you work. Thank you for sharing! I had a thought about utilizing office chairs in this manner! People throw them away all the time. It is validating to hear that you use them this way. Would love to see that process, too!
I worked in a bonsai nursery for about 3 years after college. I have lived in West and Central Africa for the last 17 years and have seen some giant Baobabs. This reminds me of one of the short squat Baobobs that are found in more arid regions of Northern Cameroon and Nigeria.
Bonsai yg bagus. Dan saya beruntung bisa mendapatkan ilmu dari anda tuan. Ilmu dari maha guru bonsai , semoga sukses selalu untuk anda. Terus berkarya dan tetap berbahagia...dari indonesia.
So glad you did the privet. I have a couple of them, I see their potential but they are growing too slow and their color is too weak. I'll hit it with some miracle grow and see what happens. Sometimes my plants will get nematodes from being on the ground. Beautiful tree, thank you.
With all the negativity in the world, you have become my main source of inspiration and happiness, and I know happiness should come from within, but it's hard sometimes to be human. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Master Chan, when spoiled for a front, is there not an opportunity to make a tree that serves to be appreciated from all sides? Perhaps on a plinth as a centerpiece? I realize it won't work for every tree, but when you have a unique specimen such as this... and with the expertise you have, i'm sure you could make it work. My Wife suggest you should call it the Privy Privet considering its history.
great eye. silly question once the privet is done how long can it be maintained before you must let it rest and become vigorous once again? As I understand from previous videos Bonsai can only be maintained for a while before there health deteriorates and they must be permitted to regain strength before re training.

I tried something similar with a large old escallonia, but in the process of lifting it I realised the plant had several different interesting sections at the base so I (probably rashly!) divided it into four plants. I now wonder if this was a bad mistake and whether any of them will survive. Does anyone know of the likely failure rate in dividing a shrub like this?
Yes - Escallonia has the same habit of growing multiple stems from the base. They also form thick trunks. You should have kept yours as a single trunk tree.
Never seen a Privet with a trunk like that..or caliper. I had a Bougainvillea that was something like that..and of course it just had to rot and break in half. I miss the hollow it had..was a nice look.

When he revealed the trunk I gasped... what a gorgeous and striking tree!!
we are so lucky to have such a great teacher in the ways of BonSai.....thank you Peter Chan
I love how you have such a long range, future focus.
You certainly need a long term view for bonsai
Wow..from bush to bonsai indeed..what a trunk! Can't wait for the next one..thx for sharing Peter.
You're welcome
Beautiful!
It reminds me of J R R Tolkien’s Treebeard .
I can almost see the eyes and a long nose!
I turned our monstrosity of a privet in our front garden into quite a decent Niwaki over two days after watching your video on the subject 👍
Pictures ?

Absolutely stunning, from out of that jungle is born a beautiful bonsai. Thank you for sharing this with us Mr Chan most enjoyable.
That's a beautiful thing Peter.

This tree looks like it has a face. The opening is the mouth, then a nose & finally the eyes are peering out above. Nicely done.
Certainly a round pot tree to me Peter, I would rotate the front each week. This video answers my queries about pruning. Tnx Mr Peter and staff..
wow Peter, this is real beautiful , enjoyed your video
Love the front that you settled on. Looks like an old man if the woods with a surprised, somewhat horrified look that you found his hiding place.

Also, this is the second time this week I've seen a video in which you wear that shirt. Very cool, Sir. Very cool...
Holy cow, didn't expect that giant trunk. The leaves remind me of forsythia.
I plan to get out an dig up an old privet tomorrow from a place where they are rampant. gorgeous tree!

I'm very curious anf want to know why you have a W-40 can standing on your Bonsai workbench. So the trees come out of the pot easier?
More than likely it's for tools.
We clean our cutting tools with that.
To clean off the sap that sticks to the scissors..
I always use it on my garden tools when I’m done with them. Keeps them oiled and resistant to rusting.

Are privet branches as easy to grow cuttings from as ficus?

You're one of the few who do. I think the adjective that best describes the fragrance of privet is 'cloying', and I'm being generous.
