  • This discussion is part of our weekly ultrasound education series. Here our Ultrasound Fellow Dr. Greg Stoner is talking about how to perform the serratus anterior plane block. This is a great block for to provide pain control for patients with rib fractures.

I had rib fractures from a car accident 2 yrs ago… The right rib cage is fine, but I am still experiencing excruciating pain on my left, due to the chronic healing of the ribs… The 6th, and 7th ribs were fractured on the left… I had an intercostal nerve block that did absolutely nothing for my pain… The pain I’m experiencing is in the Serratis Anterior area, under my left scapula over the rib, and under my left breast on the left… Will you suggest this procedure be done for someone in my situation? Do you think this will relieve my fracture pain?

We have had good success with analgesia using the SA block for rib fractures. Whether it is appropriate in your situation is up to your doctor.

No live demo. No info on how much area covered for analgesia. Waste of time. Sorry
