I get the frustration. I have it as well, to some degree, then I cool off and take a look to see where this team is at. We were “spoiled” as fans to have this team make the ploffs, with 4 SC victories within those 25 yrs. I get it. We all want that back. It took Yzerman how many yrs when he played to win a cup? Something like 14 yrs to win after he got signed by the Wings in ‘83. Not saying he doesn’t make mistakes, but also not saying he’s a bad gm either.
Exactly. Yzerman has a pass from me till based on the math to make us cup contenders by 2029. Would be 13 years after Larkins first season.Though I think for that to happen we need to start making the playoffs in this next season, so setbacks are frustrating.

We have the #1 prospect pool in the entire NHL and it's extremely deep. This by itself says we need to trust Steve Yzerman.
We got Kaner back which I think wasn't happening until Trouba axed the trade. Either way I'm happy.

We dodged several bullets by not overpaying free agents and not tying up older players on longer terms. We don't have a D on the books over 2 year contracts, the Copp contract hasn't been great, he needs to step up, we signed Taresenko and Kane and brought in additional goalie options, were doing pretty good 😏
Im just happy so far i haven't seen any contracts as bad as the Holl contract. All I want to see is Berggren and Johansson finally given spots, theve both earned it
Yzerman will spend what the owner allots. If you are upset with them not spending all the cap blame the owner. It’s no longer Mike Illitch. Also if the biggest names don’t want to come to Detroit that’s their decision, not Yzermans. I watched and waited many years to see them win a cup. It took a long time. Be patient or fuck off. Truth be said,you start making the playoffs other players see the potential for a cup run and want to play for you. Its a huge combination of talent, money,and especially timing.
Since Yzerman has been here, he has built the Wings farm system to the top 3 in the league. It takes time but is the right way. Through the draft.

These so called fans must not be watching Holmes way, and didn't understand his situation when he became the GM for the Lions. Yzerman is going thru the same thing, but having to draft younger players who are not ready for the NHL. Total different situation about development between the two sports. Unless you're drafting the #1 pick every year which for some unknown reason he was getting screwed in the draft lottery.
Hockey is a completely different game. You’re drafting players who are about to enter college, not leaving college. It takes multiple years in hockey. These fans are idiots

to say Yzerman doesn't have a plan is silly! BUT... but to say that SteveY doesn't make mistakes is completely different. I think he made a mistake starting 2 years ago when he hit the gas in Free agency and started signing a bunch of guys instead of playing the youth, AND in turn missing out on even better players in 2 great drafts. Otherwise I love the fact that SteveY learned from his mistakes and didnt sign a bunch of old vets to horrible term contracts.
Every player that doesn't play up to their projected potential always fall back on the GM. Copp for example.. So far thats starting to look like a bad signing for what he's paid. Is that Copp or Yzerman? I think we need to be real here. Yzerman isn't a God. He'll make bad signings. EVERY GM DOES. But if you're asking me is he a good GM well then, hell yes I do. We've gotten better every season under Steve and the record proves that. The fans that get impenitent always point out one or two bad contracts and never admit to the fact that the teams being built for long term success not a one and done deal. The Lions did that for decades. Now look at them. Building through the draft as it should be done and having huge success. Building a perennial team in the NHL is a slow burn and many fans just can't handle it.

I get the frustration, but overpaying a Stamkos or something to that effect would actually set the build back. I like what they’ve done so far. Bring in Vlad and a couple solid third and fourth liners, keep Kane…and have room for some kids. Still have too many goalies and D, but that’ll work itself out.
The Vlad signing is a good signing.
2025-2026 is the year where the magic happens I guaranteed it. Half the team is a UFA. Will have a ton of cap space.

I'm wondering if the log jam we have with defensive players may be because Stevie is ready to move on from some of these high level D prospects. It may be smart to get something now instead of waiting too long and ending up with a Zadina type situation if he feels they may not live up to potential.
McCarty would be HAPPY with a 30-year rebuild. "Whatever Stevie Wants."

McCarty would kill for Stevie Y,so would a lot of people, though. Yzerman can read a locker room,and he definitely knows talent beyond a doubt.
The problem some fans see is that there isn't another Raymond or Seider coming. Kasper and Mazur seem like 2/3 of a really strong 3rd line. ASP will be a great D-man to pair with Edvinson. But who replaces Kane? Who's rounding out that top 6 with Larkin, Raymond and DeBrincat? Comphers decent as #2 C but not the long term. Rasmussen, Veleno, etc... have failed to make the leap into top 6 players. We are progressing and I like a lot of these players but now that we seem to know a bit more about what we have there are some serious questions that remain unanswered. We should be good at goalie long term and have what looks like 3 very solid d-men long term but the questions about top 6 forwards still remain. Yzerman is way smarter than I am and I'm sure he'll figure it out but I dont see those players in the system now. Add to that some of the counted on players have flopped. Copp and Holl have been awful. Chiarot, Perron and Fabri mixed.

His plan may not be failing, but it’s not succeeding. A plan that is looked upon to be successful would’ve been for the redwings: to make the playoffs two years ago, lose in the first round. Make the playoffs again the next year win a series. And then this up coming year, make a deep run in the playoffs, that’s what success and good trajectory look like! This is not every day life, this is sports. You can’t look at it as if I improve every day in 15 20, 50 years, I’ll be great. Hey I was 400 lbs now 5 yrs later I’m only 335 lbs…that’s progress but you still have 135lbs more to drop in a shorter time span! There is a timeline and window for success in sports.! Nobody is calling for Steve Yzerman to be fired. But he’s not above being criticized and held accountable.! (This last sentence is what I want you to take away from this conversation. )If his name wasn’t Steve Yzerman, the tone of this conversation and the outlook of the general managers tenure would be completely different! Is there progress? Yes…has it taken a lot longer than it should ….is also a yes. You can’t always be building for tomorrow and tomorrow never comes. Tomorrow has to be a reality.

It was a gamble that didn't pay off he's still a decent player but that term and aav just kinda sucks. I know it's Monday morning quarterbacking. Holl was just a straight bad contract. Husso is the best contract out of the 3. Got a decent season out of him the first year and he is off the books next year if we dont cap dump him this year.

My favorite Red Wing player. He’s a bad GM with a high school education. Stumbling along. It will be interesting to see how he spins not making the playoffs next year. We still have a couple years on his 12 year plan so it’s like we’re ahead of schedule. Stevie, you can’t be good at everything. It’s like taking the top mechanic invite garage and making him the business owner. It just doesn’t work. He doesn’t have Verbeek to hold his hand and guide him. Like that old show “Lost in Space”.
