- A battle between the largest Christian university in America and the Biden administration took a new turn this month after Department of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona reportedly vowed to shutter Grand Canyon University (GCU), a college located in Phoenix, Arizona.
Cardona reportedly made his comments during an April 10 House Appropriations Committee hearing, stating the administration is "cracking down not only to shut them down, but to send a message to not prey on students," according to Fox News.
GCU made headlines last fall when the Department of Education fined the school a historic $37.7 million over claims students were misled about the cost of a doctoral program. Despite GCU denying the claims, appealing that ruling - and defiantly pledging not to pay - Cardona doubled down.
He said the fine is the "largest...in history against a school that lied about costs and terminated a school from Title IV." Brian Mueller, president of Grand Canyon University, recently told CBN News he believes his school is being unfairly targeted by the Biden administration, calling the massive $37.7 million fine "incredibly disappointing." "This all started 14 years ago ... Grand Canyon was in a very difficult spot," he said, noting the school buildings were aged and the institution was millions of dollars in debt. "We switched from a nonprofit to a for-profit status and went to the public markets to get access to capital." Mueller continued, "We wanted to make private Christian higher education affordable to all socioeconomic classes of Americans. And the plan worked better than we thought."
Just 10 years later, he said GCU is in a "very good spot" and that the campus is "growing like crazy," with online education exploding in popularity. With the previous issues remedied, GCU wanted to go back to being a nonprofit university. "We thought, for the legacy of the institution, [we] would be best served by doing that," he said. "We went through the process and the IRS, who has the authority to do that work, did it, and said, 'The operation you've set up qualifies as a nonprofit, and we're giving you the legal authority to operate as a nonprofit.' And then the state of Arizona reinforced that."
But Mueller said GCU found out the Department of Education did not plan to recognize the newfound nonprofit status. After four years of reportedly attempting to work with the government, he said GCU got nowhere. That's when GCU filed a complaint and the situation intensified. Watch Mueller explain.

My son graduates next week from GCU. It's been a great school, and I'm very thankful for it since his tuition was half of the other Christian universities. Graduating debt-free! Shame on the Biden administration, but what would you expect from them.

My nephew is graduating from this school this year. He's worked his way paying it all himself. Dad and mom have helped a little. I'm proud of him. Keep up the good work and keep standing for what is right.

I'm a 1994 Alumni and loved this university! I left the BS of ASU, they had just become a 'university', my education was well rounded and the core classes for my biology/chemistry degree was top notch. (Thank you Dr. Whitherspoon!) There were appx 2000 students on campus at that time. It was 3x as expensive as ASU but the teacher were mostly PhD doctors and taught the classes and helped you when you needed it. Night and day difference to other schools! Made several life long friends and never regretted going here!

GCU does not fit this profile because 1) it is legally a nonprofit entity, and 2) its high-quality students consistently have lower loan default rates than the national average at nonprofit universities.

My son graduated GCU last year. He chose and wanted to go there. He graduated debt free also I believe because of the good tiution rate.
GCU supports student's entrepreneur ideas and help them succeed (my son is evidence of that). He now is successful in the area he went to college for. He still keeps the contact with the educators for advice and guidance.
Extremely impressive college campus and programs. Definitely a city on a hill.
Stand firm GCU your success will cause your tents to spread even wider. Keep the freedom of college/education choice alive. For God never fails us.

Our Ministry is praying for GCU. I am a student there. This school belongs to Jesus, Protect this school in Jesus name.
I went to that school and they lied about their non-profit status

BOOM! "Areas in our culture where we don't have enough" and "We are going to have a significant reach in our culture" That's enough said right there to know exactly why they're being attacked. Actually, the fact that they are putting out Christian teachers was enough to ignite the Department of Education. That's their domain of total indoctrination of the young in this country and they can't afford to lose that. I have a daughter who was harassed throughout her years at the university in a pretty conservative, Midwest state because of her more conservative values. It took the progressives a long time to fill our public schools with nutcases for teachers to indoctrinate the future generations.
My goddaughter attends GCU, I really hope this garbage 🗑️ resolves itself in a satisfactory manner
Just a point of clarification, GCU is not the largest Christian University in the US, Liberty University is. GCU has about 110K students and LU has about 135K. Off topic I know, but I have to speak up for my alma mater.
I think you should get a lot of fired up moms and nuns to help with your case.

I will say, GCU made it exceedingly difficult to get in. I am a Christian who had heard good things about the university. I had to jump through soooooo many hoops to get admitted. This for an individual who holds two Masters degrees. I decided not to attend after being put through such ridiculous hoops!!

They have appealed the fine against them and it's before the court or will go before the court. It costs lots of money to take these federal agencies on. I think they were trying to resolve it with the agencies first before going into litigation.
default rates are high cuz the school dont teach very well and dont offer anything to its students

I am a student. The classes are Christian. It is awesome. I just finished the required Christian Worldview course and it helped immensely to understand what I believe and also learned about other worldviews so we can know how to reach others for Christ.

I am a Christian, but I have differing views on certain aspects of my faith from my parents. I don’t want to attend a college that is super super far right/conservative.
But I also really want to attend some Christian based classes… but only ones that should be. I want to go to Christian world view, and possibly some other faith based classes. I want to attend services. But I don’t want my science classes to be all about Christianity.
