    Young or old, heart patient or healthy, this is the way to go for us all! After my Dad had his heart attack, we all agreed to support him and go on a plant based diet. His progress has been amazing! And we all feel great all the time!

    I've discovered that there is a problem with the whole plant food based diet. I simply cannot stop watching these talks. It has been several months, and hundreds of talks, and I just cannot stop watching them.

    It works!!! My blood pressure dropped in 3 months from 171 over 91 down to 131 over 86 ...and lost 21 pounds so far... my daughter and wife lost 40 lbs apiece in less than 3 months... never go around hungry ...I give GOD all the glory !!!

    Dr Esselstyn is a great pioneer in the field of cardiovascular health. Thank you so much Dr. Esselstyn. The results my father and I experienced while on a whole food plant based diet is nothing short of a miracle. We could never go back to our old ways. Your a great man Dr.

      It's a good video, and he's right about the stents, etc. but his extreme diet is only good for those who are about to have a heart attack and want to avoid the knife. Yes, it will work, but after regaining health (and for those not in direct need), a form of this diet with added fish and some healthy oils would help even more. Esselstyn is not a cardiologist. The top cardiologists with years of research would disagree with this guy. Yes, he has some things right, such as a plant-based diet, but his extreme methods would only be temporarily useful to those who are on the verge of dying from heart disease. For most people they would be better off with Dr. Steven Masley's 30-Day Heart Tune Up, which goes into great detail of why olive & avocado oils (and small portions of dark chocolate) are heart helpful/healthy and why fish is as well, along with the reason why plant omega 3's are not as helpful as omega 3's from fish. Even if you don't believe Masley or any other cardiologist (who also agree about preventing surgeries & stents), you can just look at the healthiest and longest lived people in the world (in the blue zones). They drizzle olive oil on some foods, and eat fish 3x per week. It's the sugars and simple carbs they leave out and they don't eat much, or any, meat or dairy. Good fats as in olive, avocado, and nuts (and their oils) increase the large particle LDL & HDL which is very protective. Sugars and simple carbs (including many types of grains) increase small particles in cholesterol profiles, which increase dangerous plaque growth. This is why most people who have heart attacks have low or normal cholesterol (because they eat the western diet of sugar, flour, grains - and then just take a pill in the hopes of saving themselves). Also why many who have high cholesterol have super clean healthy arteries; because they eat healthy fats to increase particle size, while eating no sugar & flour products. Esselstyn has some things right, but his beliefs about oil are way off. Oil is not oil. There are differences. All you'll get from eliminating good fats is dementia or alzheimer's. No, you don't need to drink the stuff, but completely eliminating good oils is not wise either. He's right about being mostly plant based and preventing heart surgeries, for sure, but I'll go with those who live long, healthy lives in the blue zones on a less extreme version of plant-based nutrition.

      "Extreme diet"?? Eat real food and not the foods that clog your arteries? Is it really that extreme?

      Yes, extreme it is. Real foods also include healthy fats (that help artery health, not clog arteries, and are essential for brain health). Extreme is when you omit the necessary "good" fats. As noted, the healthiest people on the planet use healthy fats and eat some fish 3x per week, but no other meat and no/very little sugar, flour. Plant based is definitely the best and his diet is far superior over the usual western killer diet, but it lacks the good fats required for the best artery, organ, brain health.

      I agree that everyone should eat healthy fats, meaning flax seeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds, almonds, walnuts, brazil nuts, sesame seeds etc.

    l love Ann....she is really a mighty mouse. Dr. Essy and son Rip are as equally mighty. l listen and watch your videos and l get a lot out of what you are sharing.     Super fantastic. This video is soooo pleasure to hear Dr. Esselstein even though I probably listen to about 50 videos of his. And this content too. But I’m ready to listen to him again. To give me certainty going down in the fat. Never enough to listen to him even if it is the same thing over and over again. I never got his book I’ll get it today on Amazon. I’m on plant base diet for the last 7 years and there is always something new to implement. 🙏🏻👍🌟♾🎆💙

    Everyone is obligated to spread the word. Listen to the lectures of Dr. Esselstyn, Dr. Fuhrman, Dr. T. Colin Campbell and others on youtube or read their books. By my brother tipping me off to read Eat to Live three weeks ago my life has completed changed. Now I am actively promoting the Vegan life style and loving my new diet. Thanks Dr. Esselstyn, and Dr. Fuhrman. I no longer fear dying of heart diseases.

    Meat, dairy and fat was not what was making them healthy. Plants cause health, along with water. Meat, dairy and fat are flavorful but not the diet man was made to live by. Dr. Esselstyn is a genius, and courageous in our times.

    When I first ordered the Vegsource DVDs, they were from 2005. And it was Caldwell Esselstyn's presentation, that I found particularly compelling. So much so, that I must have easily watched it, more than 20 times.

    All these people talking about how their grandparents and so on lived to be 90 to 100 eating meat. Yeah, so did my great grandmother. She died at 105 years of age. But here is the thing. When these people were younger meat eating was far less than it is today. consumption of meat and dairy has quadrupled over the last 100 years, especially in the last twenty. My great grandmother was dirt poor and bought a lot less food weekly compared to today's standards. That also meant less meat and dairy. She grew her own vegetable garden and relied on staples like flour and potatoes because those were more available and affordable (remember this was before factory farming). A vegetable garden is easier to grow and cultivate than farm animals. Meat was a luxury. Ask any baby boomer and they will say the same thing. Meat and dairy were luxuries, Not consumed at every meal in huge quantities like now. Ditto with eating out all the time (and as most of us vegans know, there is far more omnivore fare available in restaurants than vegan fare). Also, we are slaughtering billions of animals daily which also requires tons and tons of grain to feed those animals in order to keep up with an ever growing demand for more meat and dairy. It will have to stop eventually because our earth can not sustain this practice. We need to find less destructive ways to feed a growing world. A vegan diet is sustainable, healthy, and better for the environment and for animals.

      Also in those days, they did not give the animals growth hormones and antibiotics and allow them to live is such horrible conditions and feed them GMO corn. It was a lot different way back then. The animals lived the way God intended them to live, naturally. Almost everything in our food supply is much more dangerous now. The good old days are gone, and so are a lot of people who eat what they call food these days.

    Also check out John McDougall's website and books from the library as his regimen compliments Esselstyn's as well. Don't make this too hard. Many Mex & Chinese recipes are ideal - just eliminate the oil & cheese as needed * replace meats w/ beans/chick pea hummus/portebello mushrooms, etc.Costco has large bags of spinach for a good price while kale is your friend. Both -& collards, bok choi, chard - are EASY to grow in a fall-spring garden under a cloche in the north as they like cool weather.

    My friend & his fiancé have both been on this diet for over 2 years. They lost a significant amount of weight & had to modify their diet, because they looked too skinny. I admire their tenacity & discipline. I could only do it for a couple of months, (back then). Our culture provides a tremendous variety of food, not from the different ethnicities, but from the commercial & disposable gratification variety.

    Its pretty simple, and yes he does address it in more complete presentation - but many seem to want to evaluate regimens based upon truncated snippets.
    What part of juice is a whole plt food & not simply high glycemic sugar water? You want carrots, eat the carrot. Fruit smoothies similarly pulverize the plt & eliminate the benefit of fiber in mitigating digestion rate. Green smoothies are fine, fruit are not. Likewise NO refined oil. 9-11% fat as part of the WHOLE plt foods.

    As an R.N.of 30 years experience on the front lines of "Health Care" I'm now, more than ever, afraid of losing my job..... my yearly evaluation was excellent all except for the fact that I share "Alternative Dietary Teaching" (as though that was a 'bad' thing).
    I do not prescribe herbal medicines or dietary supplements as it is not in the scope of a nurse's practice according to the guidelines of the governmental agency called the "Executive Office of Health and Human Services." What I do is suggest to my patients who are suffering from long term upper respiratory conditions including shortness of breath and wheezing that they may have a "sensitivity" to dairy and that perhaps going without for a week or so might improve their condition. I've been reprimanded on several occasions for such teaching and am dumbfounded by the apparent ignorance of such brilliant minds to recognize and teach the truth as Hippocrates would have done. I can only hope that if I do get fired for such forward thinking that I can work for a functional medicine doctor "somewhere" and practice the kind of nursing that I believe in. I want to tell everyone I know the truth about casein and gmo foods among other things..... I totally respect those doctors who put their lives on the line to turn the wheels of truth regardless of the consequences to their personal lives.

      talkingstick2u Good for you. I hope that you either don't lose your job, and/or that you find a natural Dr. to work with. I did a search on the internet for a naturalpathic Dr. in my area and I cannot find one. I have a massive prostate cancer and it was too large to cut out, but I don't want it cut out anyway; and I'm not taking any typical treatment. It had spread to my ribs and some fatty tissue. At last check, it was no longer in the fatty tissue or the ribs. I try to eat lots of leafy greens and make carrot juice, but I have a problem keeping my dishes clean and so I end up eating things that I should not, until I clean my juicer and do dishes. So, far I have not had any pain in the 9 years that it was found. But I think the cheating has a nullifying effect on the diet and I'm not holding as much fluid as I had been, so I need to stop cheating between eating what I know I should. I have a long list of things such as Salads of dark leafy greens with onions, garlic, ginger, broccoli, Cheyenne pepper, turmeric, tomatoes, cauliflower, and many more things, along with juicing carrots, beets, broccoli, with a touch of garlic, ginger, and various vegetables, like celery. I eat lots of fruit that have red color such as raspberries, strawberries, watermelon. I eat lots of sardines for meat, unless I go to church and end up cheating at a pot luck dinner, of which I get mad at myself for doing. I go to the VA clinic for a digital check once or twice per year. they are monitoring me and letting me try the natural treatments, but I wish I could quit cheating in-between.

      Andrew, I'm so glad you are on the path towards wellness! Cheating is an issue I wrangled with for years! I was on a roller coaster..... up, down, up, down every time I went to work or to church. I finally told the minister that having bake sales and big breakfasts filled with heart attack on a plate items is no way to treat the temple.... it's like offering hard whiskey at an AA meeting. I said to him, "How many people in this congregation are suffering from the effects of diabesity, cardiovascular disease? How many have had heart attacks or strokes? How many suffer with depression and the sugar blues? Why would you support a cause that promotes cancer and so many other chronic dis-eases?
      Anyway, I've found that mirror work and leaving notes on the dash board of your car and in the mirror where you brush your teeth every day were very powerful in promoting change. Learning to say "NO" to yourself is the challenge. Practice! Look in the mirror and practice saying "No thank you" and "Oh, no thanks I brought my lunch, I'm all set" or "No, I'm good, I don't eat foods that were made in a laboratory....!" etc. I used to go down the road on the way to work sometimes screaming at no one in particular..... "NO! I'm not going to eat any of that food that the drug reps brought in! NO! NO! NO!" You get the picture right? The more emotion you put into it the more effective it is for making changes in your habits. Change your Thinking, Change your Life!

      Heidi Roth Thank you. You are right, our church is a pot luck church. We have one event after another that includes food. We had a flashlight Easter egg hunt with inflatables and lots of hot dogs. Every-time I saw someone walk by with a hot dog, I could already taste the mustard on one. I walked up to the pastor and I told him that I want to tell him something so that he can hold me accountable. (he already knows that I shouldn't eat stuff like that but he doesn't tell me I can't if I do) I told him that I was thinking about getting a hotdog and that I shouldn't have one so I'm telling him so that if I did get one, I'd feel guilty because I told him that I wasn't going to get one. but, many times I go to my sister's house and I didn't have time to make a salad or bring something that I can eat, so I eat her food.
      But, I like the note thing. I already yell in the car going down the street. I once heard Nancy Polosi say that we didn't have a spending [problem, we just have a deficit problem. I yelled to the top of my lungs waving my arms in the car, saying you stupid idiot, you don't get a deficit problem without first having a spending problem in the first place, because spending is how you end up with a deficit problem, you dummy!!! Well, I noticed that I was at a 4 way stop and the guy at the other stop sign looked at me weird, probably thinking who is he mad at!!! Well, I might as well talk to myself about saying no to processed foods, including hormone beef that has also been fed GMO feeds, etc. I had about 6 glasses of carrot juice today and I just got back from our closing AWANA program for this school year and I know that eating cookies and drinking punch would completely counter every glass of carrot juice that I drank, so I stayed away from the table. So, I did good today, but now I have to worry about tomorrow. One day at a time, like an alcoholic. ... Again, thanks for the advice on tricks to help me stay on track.

      talkingstick2u I'm going to be working to get into a nursing program, and your comment stoked a fear of mine...of experiencing the same thing you have: not being able to mention alternative dietary interventions to sick patients. How do I stand by and not say anything to a diabetes patient, when I KNOW that they can reverse their condition with a whole food plant centered diet???? That's so frustrating to know that you could possibly lose your job!

      She’s right. Any person That works in the Medical professional lose their jobs in today tell people to change their diet to a whole food plant-based regime. The reason is that the hospitals do not make money from telling people to change their diapers. They make money from selling drugs. That is their business model.
      Hospitals are not in the business of keeping people well. They are in the business of tweeting sick people. The more sick people there are, the more money they make. So if they give them drugs that will make him feel well, and heal their problems, they will no longer make any money.
      So they prescribe medications that will make people feel better but will actually make them worse inside. That’s why they need to prescribe him so many drugs! The more drug they prescribe them to counteract other drugs, the more money they make. Everyone, is happy! Except the patient.

    Omega 3s are also available in flax, chia, green leafy vegetables (which you'll already eat in Esselstyn's diet) etc.

    Also, rolled oats, cinnamon, ground flax seeds, a small handful of raisins or a sliced banana with unsweetened (lowfat) rice milk (make!) is a simple healthy breakfast. Add fruit as well. Vegie wraps (think vegie burritos with a leaf as a low fat/calorie wrapper) are easy convenient lunches that are easy to carry. Falafel with a soy yogurt cuc/garlic tzatzaki in pita is a great option as well. NO OIL & Limit oily nuts, avocado to keep the fat content low that is a source of arterial inflammation

      Ground flaxseed has hydrogen cyanide in it and is forbidden in our nordic countries. And your other advices are really not for people that want a good steady blood sugar to begin their day with. But I'm sure that you look both muscular and slim like me the fat-meat eater. :)

    DHA & EPA omega 3 acids can be found in algae, which the fish eat. These algae omega 3 acids are available to be purchased as a supplement. One brand is Deva, they are the equivalent of fish oil. ALA omega 3 acids are present in various plant foods.

    I am starting this plant based lifestyle and trying to avoid oil and sugar... But did I hear correctly when Dr. Esselstyn warned against smoothies? Green smoothies have become one of my staples and is one of the main ways I get my greens.

    Please read the book, "Eating Animals", by Jonathan Safran Foer. Even if you won't become a vegan for cardio-vascular health, this amazingly easy to ready piece of investigative journalism will totally change the way you think about the "manufacturing" of animal protein.

    My buddy is the same way. A personal trainer who eats nothing but meat (paleo). He can't poop right, is tired all the time, depressed, yoyo's his weight weekly, and has brutal arthritis. Can't make him see the light.

    williamsfilms1, it is ALWAYS better to eat the fruit or vegetable than to just juice it...and by the way, we HAVE 32 juicers in our mouths, our teeth...there's another plant-strong doc name Michael Klaper who also has great videos here on youtube. You want to eat the whole fruit because it offers fiber and extra nutrients along WITH the juice, much better for our bodies.

    To anyone with rosacea thinking about making this diet shift I highly recommend this way of eating. I made the switch for other reasons and a side effect was the cessation and significant reversal of my rosacea symptoms. Don't wait another day!

    1 or 2 teaspoon of ground flaxseed can be included in diet because it is rich in essential omega 3 fats.

    I feel much better without fruit in my diet. It stimulates my appetite too much. I don't feel peaceful. Sticking with veggies, beans and whole grains. Yum! 🙂🌱

    I'm having trouble understanding this properly. At one point Dr. Esselstyne says you don't wash away the plaque. You increase the Endothelium.
    And there are exrays showing plaque reduced and or completely gone.
    Can anyone explain this fully for me, please.

    my favorite salad dressing is 1/4 cup mustard one tablespoon maple syrup an 1/2 cup water DELISH you can add more or less water to your liking an even less maple syrup, mix it the way you like it.

    I can understand this obsession with weight given the golden arches etc but some of us who have adopted this lifestyle have no wish to lose any weight given that we are not overweight in the first place. I have found that I am losing weight when I have no need to do so. So what sort of foods should I be eating in order to maintain or even add a few pounds to my weight while still eating wholly vegan?

    Stefanie Reinhold My almost 88 year old grandmother walks for exercise daily, drives herself, babysits several young grand and great grandchildren, preaches, and plays the piano and sings in church several times a week. She's always on the go, and full of vitality and energy. Never had a heart attack, cancer, or diabetes. Meat eater.

      She had good genes. Those who get the greatest benefit from Esselstyn's message are people whose genes aren't so great -- the research shows that even these people can be heart disease free provided they follow appropriate dietary measures.

      Soniya Mystical The fact is that no matter how good your genes are, you can't escape the fact that a meat meal floods your vessels with fat. I think this is going to catch up with nearly everyone eventually. Perhaps they won't experience a heart attack. Perhaps it will be some other symptom of poor blood flow -- vision loss, severe back pain, diabetes, dementia, stroke.

      @Stephen Otto let me congrat on the fact you produced some real boloney that is entirely without support in your comment. In a good couple of years now we have red some important amount of really big studies concerning fat, clean fat (coconut oil) and butter. One of those is a huge one by Dr Aseem Malhotra revealing the stupid fat fear. You are namedroping symptoms like some stupid parrot. I have excellent blood flow and vasodilation and I'm super fit and slim. I do eat lots of NO rich plants and also juices from those like beetroot but I also eat meat, fish, coconut oil, butter and eggs and low on the carb side. The one does not exclude the other and of course you must do exercise and muscle work on top. On a vegan diet I would get no aminoacids and if I excluded the fats to I would be forced to eat tons of plants to cope with a daily life. "Meat and fat clogs you veins" grow up and search in the big world of new research and above all learn about the nutrition needs of man!

      Silica water leeches aluminum out of the body. Distilled water also has a similar effect on some undesirable mineral forms. (Sorry , this isn’t from Esselstyn.)

      Coffee machine manufacturers claim distilled's lack of minerals negatively affects heating elements. I use it anyway. Works so far,& probably won't need de-scaling.

    Just a small point, the blue 'heart attack and stroke death-rate per 10,000 population graph' he shows dramatically at 13:21 .... note the Y axis of the chart does not start at zero. So actuallyinstead of a 80% drop of mortality due to a vegan diet, it's actually about 20%.

    I was already vegetarian, but recently 90% let go of oils & cheese. l've only lost 1 lb a week over 3wks, but my knees, hips, & feet feel like I've lost 20 lbs.
