- There is no one single cause of the cultural disintegration that we see happening all around us, but one of the more significant factors has been the impact of a horde of fatherless boys coming of age. Not only have many fathers been absent, the boys have grown up to manhood in institutions-like schools, colleges, and companies-that have been conquered by feminist sensibilities. With some of these boys the response has been one of rage, and with others it has been a collapse into a fatal acquired sense of helplessness. These are the boys in the basement. Other boys-not having had any men around to teach them how to be a man-conclude that perhaps they ought to try being a girl. Not knowing how to be a boy, they think that maybe they could be better at something completely different.
It's Good To Be A Man: A Map to Manhood: mycanonplus.co...
Doug Wilson's Blog & Mablog video is presented by Canon Press.
I've found that male teachers are the most popular among entire schools. They teach differently, and the more notorious troublemakers tend to settle down in their classes. Also....first.
How I wish there were more male teachers! Boys can go through all their schooling with all women teachers. Then we wonder why theyre bored at school and they think reading/studying is "for girls". Then they get saved and are told they have to read and understand this big book called the Bible. My heart breaks for boys these days. They NEED fathers or at least good father figures!
One of those male teachers, here.
Everything is stacked against us.
Most administrators fear real masculinity because it leads in principle and conviction.
Most administrators live in fear and compromise.
Administrators are spineless pragmatists that wouldn’t last a year trying to lead young people-that’s usually why they are administrators. But if they couldn’t lead young people what makes them think they can lead competent gifted educators? They tend to drive them away.
And hence, weak administrators lead weak teachers. I’m talking about Christian schools btw. It’s so broken.
Church of God, start schools. But first, lead your own families. But hurry up because we need to start schools.
@@doejohn215 I'd teach in a school unashamed of Christ.
@@doejohn215 Please continue doing the best you can! You are SO needed!
@@dnzswithwombats it’s so spiritually rewarding. I get to proclaim Christ as Lord over Literature, Philosophy, BIOLOGY because as we’ve seen, it really is Christ or Chaos.
So many young people have come to faith, but my administrators are so cluless. The spiritual warfare is so real in education.
I have not been asked to return because I kept fighting for more accountability for students. It’s lawless.
So much good teaching here. You are a father and grandfather in the faith to so many. May God continue to use you mightily and keep you from falling.
A note on weight. I agree with almost everything that Doug says on the subject, however I will argue that there are ways in which weight matters.
- If you are overweight, you are likely to die earlier….which robs the following generations of your wisdom.
- If you are overweight, you are more likely to be unhealthy in you latter years, which means that you are a burden to your family, not a contributor. Also, you are a burden to the health system, which is paid for by other people. Chronic “lifestyle” diseases account for a very large proportion of the national health budget.
- If you are overweight, you are modelling self-indulgence rather than self-discipline. It is not the Sunday dinner with family that is your problem, it is the decision to have dessert every day of the week. It is the decision to have that donut with your morning coffee or to have fries with that drive-through lunch Every Day.
Yes, I know. Restricted eating is not easy, but viewers of this channel should know that worthwhile things in life seldom are. Do your homework, take responsibility for WHAT you eat, and how much you eat matters a lot less than you might think. The basics are to avoid sugars, starches and hyper-processed foods.
My thoughts exactly. Well struck. I would add that strength training in the gym is also a discipline that supplements other forms of strength in life as well as making you a better physical defender of your family.
Oh yeah, and avoid soy like the plague
Perfectly said, my thoughts exactly!
This was one of the best BAMs I’ve heard in a while, and that’s saying something. The end alone is worth the price of admission.
Due to age and its related infirmities, I haven't lifted for a long time. When I did, mirrors in gyms were always intended to be a way of ensuring one had the proper form. Improper form would either make your workout ineffectual, or dangerous. And the heavy physical workout was always intended to counter the effects of making a living by using your mind, rather than muscles. Listening to this analysis, I feel like a Dodo who never got the extinction notice...
I totally agree, strength training (rather than bodybuilding) is such a great antidote to mind work and sitting at a desk all day. I hope you get back out there!
@@hoorayimhelping3978 i agree mirrors are helpful. I dont think this take was great.
You know the history of it. I assumed it was a vanity thing. Now we know. I’m sure a lot of modern young people like the mirrors for a reason unrelated to their original purpose. Thanks for the explanation.
@@JRPLawyeress1 As someone who started lifting a year ago, I can attest that it's really easy for the vanity to creep in. After losing 25 lbs to get back to my bean pole physique and then seeing my body accumulate muscle has, at times, been really intoxicating. I've flexed in the mirror at home, admiring my newbie gains, but would then realize that was pretty effeminate. You're right, mirrors are for the purpose of form and safety, but it can be one flex away from vanity fair.
When I work out with other people, we check each other's form and help make adjustments. We correct when something is misaligned and encourage when something is going well. I'm sure there's a spiritual lesson there! (I also use the mirrors when lifting by myself)
Denigrate a 300ibs bench press only if you hate Christian excellence. Only a seminarian could draw a parallel between building a 300ibs bench press and buying hoop earrings to wear on Instagram and expect to be taken seriously.
Wilson speaks as a father in dotage, but we speak as an older brother who understands what you're going through and exactly how to get through it.
Read Stephen Wolfe instead.
I watched the new doc once early this morning before work and again with my brother and my teenage son this evening. It’s awesome. Thinking of starting a men’s Bible study and leading off with it! Keep the good content coming!
Thank you for this. Ironically, I was running on the treadmill at a hotel while listening to this in order to shed the pounds from working in an ACCS classroom. (And also because I like food too much). It sure helped put my workout in the proper perspective. Thanks!
Thank you for calling out the “king” calling and other ways men act like girls
Good caution on motivations, my only pushback would be that in my experience as a college athlete and an Army Ranger, confidence comes from preparation. My confidence and "presence" as a man didn't come from the gym, but they definitely grew as I put in the work. Certain lessons on life and discipline are only learned through physical struggle. In an increasingly sedentary, digital world, the gym is one of the few remaining places that men can find those challenges. At the end of the day, it's a tool for learning bigger lessons. Agree that it certainly needs to be about capability, not aesthetics. Good example: our church is sending a small team of men to assist with Bible deliveries in the Columbian jungles, there is a fitness requirement. Several men that would like to go, have been disqualified because they're not physically ready. Nobody expected Churchill to stand on the beach with a machine gun because that wasn't his leadership role, but somebody had to. That said, thanks for the video, I'm a big fan and I really appreciate your ministry and teaching.
Wow, good luck with that mission! God bless everyone who goes on it🌹
It's the difference between confidence and arrogance. Not needing affirmation, not caring about degradation, being emotionally sound and confident in who and what you are. Bearing burdens and enduring the hits that come our way. We were made to lead even when we are being led.
Imagine not having a father.
I get Doug's point about this but in defense of mirrors in the gym, those are there for checking your form as you lift.
Not that you need stroking Doug but this is one of your bests and very needed, thx. Will reinduldge a time or two more.
I couldn't agree more. I have been a fitness trainer for 32 years, and I've seen it all Pastor, you are spot on! By the way, the ones who grunt the loudest are the ones looking for manliness and not exerting it.
DUDE!!...(I mean, Pastor Wilson...)the ending slay me...keep carrying those heavy metaphors...
As always, excellent video with stimulating content. Others have commented on this also, but I use mirrors in the gym to check my form. Maybe there's an appropriate biblical analogy (deleted: analysis) in doing so. Also, there are men at church who grow and groom some excellent looking beards. I hope we're not saying you should never compliment an on-point beard.
No, you should never compliment another man's beard. That's gay and the fetishization of a natural male feature
"Many people don't realize how heavy these metaphors are & I carry them around all the time, just for you."
We so appreciate that. It's an important way of feeling led & protected, even at a distance. Thank you.
That ending was absolutely dynamite!
Doug I love your talks thank you 🙏🏻.
We live in an age of influencer pop- masculinization. Men aren’t being incentivized to act like men so that is why you are seeing society crumble before your eyes.
I love Doug, but sometimes brevity is more appropriate and incisive than well-spoken, but circuitous prose. Just say it and get to the point.
1.Winston Churchill was a gluttonous drunk. Consulted Druids and Witches for wartime advice. 2. Externals almost always mirror internalized discipline. Thank you for informing us all of your life experience with athletic endeavors. As the ancient Greek philosopher said, "It would be tragic to have gone through life without discovering just what the human body is capable of." Or something like that.
15:40 That was me, I'm the guilty one. Sorry to have said hurtful things.
God bless you🌱
I had to watch a Gavin Newsom commercial before this 😡😡😡.
Big Brother knows what you're watching, and isn't pleased.
Metabolic unhealth is the real epidemic in the US. The connection between insulin resistance and the litany of metabolic conditions (type-two diabetes, coronary heart disease, inflammation, macular degeneration, polycystic ovarian syndrome and dementia, to name just a few) is jaw dropping. The solution? At the risk of oversimplifying, do anything natural that promotes insulin sensitivity and avoid vegetable seed oils.
Lol, sugar is the biggest culprit.
If you fast you can eat anything including evil wicked seed oils and sugar
I have no idea what the point of this post was; it seems to me that you are searching for a mountain amongst mole hills. Churchill also was a terrible leader and had to be rehabilitated over decades to look like the statesmen people consider him today - I mean if the body is a temple why are you preaching from a trough at the buffet? I just don't see the point of this except to hurl water at where there is no fire.
I can't believe this channel isn't a hundred times as big, even if it was only for the eloquence and the delicate irony.
So many young men have nothing to look forward to thanks to the collapse of our system. They'll never be able to retire. They'll likely never afford a house. Theyll be working hand to mouth the rest of their lives. They're already disgusted by our world. If the church can get the Gospel to them and their hearts change it sure seems to me like we could have tens of thousands of readymade missionaries with virtually no distractions in their hearts.
Yea just use the young men to make the church money. I get more and more ashamed of calling myself a Christian next to you greedy lot.
Single homeschooling mom of 3... this content gives me hope, and simultaneous sorrow.
Stick with it, dear lady; God is faithful!

I've hesitated to say something about this, Doug, because I'm the proverbial broken clock that's right one time every twelve hours and you seem to be a clock that's right the other eleven hours. Like the minute hand gets stuck (clogged?) at twenty four and skips over the 5 hour mark straight to twenty six. But I realize that this hesitation is not good for any reason, and now that you've addressed it, I feel bad for not speaking up sooner. Oh well.
I do not see how one's atherosclerosis is glorifying to God. You touch on this in "My Life for Yours" regarding the dinner table, the sin of gluttony, and I found the argument lacking. You are right to point out that idolization of physical health is wrong. I don't see how getting triple bypass surgery that could have been prevented or postponed by way of reasonable behavioral choices is something God calls us to do, however. Dying prematurely of an unpredictable event may be the Lord's plan. I do not see where He calls us to unnecessarily increase the risk of that happening.
Doug is killing it on this one! Well said! You might be a “thought leader”
“Men should not have to leave their homes to act like men” that is really good!
Certainly there's much more to masculinity than physical prowess. And yet we are physical creatures and our bodies are the medium through which our souls interact with the world outside our heads. I stay fit for at least three reasons: 1) It's my way of pushing back against a Gnostic culture, 2) it allows me to adequately meet the physical challenges of life, and 3) it's one of the ways I glorify God in accordance with human design. Can fitness become obsession and idolatry? Clearly it can, but so can any other good gift from the Father.
Unless that Navy SEAL is Dan Crenshaw.
Pastor Doug, it doesn't look like you know that much about weight rooms. maybe something about the continental breakfast at hotel California for the next title.
Pastor Doug is king of the wordsmiths! (Being
a female, I assume that remark is okay.)
Mirrors in a gym serve a purpose other than vanity.
Nicely put Doug! I wish my upbringing had included such wisdom. That would have helped me to impart it to my son.

"With someone like Peterson, his answers make enough sense that he's in danger of becoming Christian himself." It honestly seems like he's headed in that direction which is great! I just turned 18 and I look up to him a lot.
I love him.
The conan the barbarian and George Bernard Shaw lines got me laughing so hard and long I had to scroll back a bit to catch up. So much wisdom with so much vitality, God bless you sir!
Thank you, Brother Wilson!
John Eldredge has been speaking about the masculine journey for over 10 years in his bookS, "WILD AT HEART".
"THE WAY OF THE EILD HEART".
O yes! The part about the beard is hilarious! Very good.
If you bench 300 you DESERVE the council of sigmas admiration. Itsnot comparable to earrings.
I get where your coming from about the mirrors, just wanted to point out that those are there to check your form and posture, that’s why gyms often have those.
barfyman362... bro... how many people would notice?
If a man can put on a dress and come into your organization and say I'm a feminist and you accept him you have no respect of mine
So incredibly well said.
You are totally qualified to give this message even with a few extra pounds.
If you do, want to make a change, I highly recommend you look at doing the carnivore diet.
It’s incredibly healthy and aggravates progressives.
For Timothy it was his mother & grandmother initially. Like you say, God is not limited. Jacob & Esau seemed to have a contrast between masculinity & and home life.
Godliness comes first for Paul. Asceticism has no worth in that respect & physical training has some advantage.
Some of the great hymns have come out of 'weakness' that give us great strength.
It's a bit like Ecclesiastes. There is all manner of scenarios in the brain vs brawn, rich vs poor, youth vs age, athlete vs artist etc. Also reminds me of Aesop's fables.
God's Word & the local church as a whole played a big role in myself growing in maturity as a man.
Modern western society is seriously fragmenting as are families & individuals.
Yes, the boys are famished. Thats why I was grateful for John Eldredge's book Wild at Heart 20+ years ago. It wasn't a strict "how to" but a book that showcased the strengths of masculinity and why it's good to be a man; he was the O.G. Its Good To Be A Man.
He understood this need then, but unfortunately his works were dismissed by many.
It was good for me, has helped me become a man, and has been an amazing filed manual for trainingy boys.
I dare say he did way more for me than any other book out there.
lol, Poast Fizzeke!
(in all seriousness, if you cannot bench bodyweight you have work to do.)
My motivation to lift weights has never been to look good in the mirror. That's nice, but I would rather be strong. There will come a day when I will have to muster every ounce of my strength in an emergency. When that day comes and my strength fails me, I can at least know I tried my best. When that day comes and I have never bothered trying to get strong, my laziness will have severe consequences.
Also, it's obvious that being strong is better in daily life. In an office, there will still occasionally be heavy things that need to be moved, like boxes of printer paper. For a woman, these things are extremely heavy. I saw a lady pushing one down the hall because she was not strong enough to pick it up. She was very happy when I picked it up and took it where it needed to go. Women love strong men because they can rely on them more.
Really? Your dumping on Jordan Peterson and you look and sound like you're reading off a q card. Thanks for playing 😂😂😂
Great video, king 👑
No but seriously, greatly appreciated.
Bring back biblical polygyny as solution. Enough off status quo for Roman traditions of men instead return to moral law of God.

It seems to me that Jordan Peterson has come to belief in
YHWH (Jehovva) and Yeshua, his son. Maybe you should really start listening to him.
I've not seen any such admission. I hope he does get saved. But I haven't seen it yet. If he did, I promise you, much of his audience would turn on him in a second! It would not just be loss of influence / popularity. It would be a great loss of money if people stopped buying his books and offering him speaking engagements. Would he have the guts to risk that?
I think he has.
Jordan Peterson is just some political commentator - there is no reason to listen to him for spiritual purposes.
