Seattle podiatrist Larry Huppin explains the underlying cause of bunion pain and how you can eliminate the pain without surgery. Bunion surgery is certainly necessary in some cases, but far too many people that can be treated by non-surgical methods are getting bunion surgery. Don't be one of them, watch this video first.

I really appreciate all your videos that I have viewed. Clearly your practice is focused on helping patients and avoiding unnecessary treatments and costs! Thanks again. BTW I have had a couple of visits to your practice and have been pleased with the care and advice I have received. You are really doing a great public service.

AVOID surgery. I love these two words when strung together. Thank you for posting this... gives me hope that I don't need to have my bones cut away 😱

Great advice! Also Lace your shoes so the top lace is not used at all then don’t crisscross laces. Instead lace them on each side of the shoes and then only cross at the tongue if it has a loop on it. You want shoes more loose at top and tighter over heel. This worked wonders for me and I also use soft rubber bunion inserts in between big toe and second toe.

You can't see the orthotics or bottom of the screen, because the text is in the way.

This is wonderful to try to help others! Sadly I have only worn good shoes with proper support for my feet my entire adult life and rarely ever wore heels a handful of times! I had 4 children which resulted in my feet going from a 6.5 to a size 8. No pain until 12 years ago (I am 58). Then came intense throbbing pain 24 hours a day for 5 years and I was still wearing the best shoes? My X rays show a large bunion on left foot with a thinning of the step off joint and a bone spur on the Achilles tendon connection to the heel. The right foot has a smaller bunion but again, a bone spur on the Achilles tendon joint. I can't even sleep all night and wake up with clenched hands from the pain. When I walked into the Podiatrists office last week, I was wearing Teva sandals as I can no longer wear shoes! I have my appt with the Orthopedic surgeon on the 28th in Seattle. Its is hereditary in my family sadly....I did my best to avoid surgery.

I have had them more than half my life. I have been wearing custom orthotics since I was 12. I am 40 now and barely have pain. I don’t ever plan on having surgery unless it gets so bad and nothing can be done.

I am 16 and I have tailor bunion and bunion near big toe on my both feet genetically. I use flats even then my bunion is getting bigger day by day so what should I do and it's really painful.

The have now done research that shows that bunions can be inherited and are not necessarily caused by wearing high heel shoes

I appreciate that he takes a conservative approach to treatment! I have had bunions for years and always knew that surgery was an option, but who the heck can afford that much time off, casts, crutches, healing, and one foot at a time! Not me....

Well i got my bunion from wrestling practice of not wearing shoes. My big toe got the side bottom of the map. It been slightly painful but not until. Tibula ankle fracture that it keep me off balance and slight pain. It's been since 2002 so it's been awhile. And i just saw the price for surgery whoa. but hmm treatment

Went to orthopedic today bc I hit my foot in the bunion area. It flared to the point the big toe is purple. It hurts even more to walk but the worst pain is when it’s resting as it throbs like a toothache. Anti inflammatory meds, resting the foot, icing and wide shoes aren’t helping. The pain keeps me up some nights😥😰😓😢 any solution other than corrective surgery as I’m scared it may come back

With age those darn first metatarsals just decide to migrate south. The capsules that contained them give up the ghost and the foot eventually collapses under you. People with out bunions are very fortunate. They are a disappointing nuisance.

I wish I had known all of this before I had my first surgery. Doc messed it up & I had another to fix it but it didn't work. Biggest concern is that it will affect mobility as I age. Thanks for your advice to make surgery the last option. I wish I had seen it sooner. ☹
