he isn't asking to be set free, he is demanding it. i love the beautiful contrast between the 2 voices he used, his regular and that deeper one-- he's really showing another dimension of himself. Also the way he sheds clothing throughout the video, kind of like a Pheonix and its feathers.. this is rebirth edit: if you pay attention to the shapes jimin and the dancers make in the beginning starting with that 'swirl' it mimics the life cycle of caterpillars into butterflies. the swirl is the egg, then they move out of it into a longer shape representing the cacoon or chrysalis stage. when they lift jimin up near the end is him breaking out of it, and when he drops down he's completely in a different colored outfit/form, a butterfly, freed from it's cacoon/ past self, and flying above and higher than all his haters and his own inner conflicts. he's set free
I have already shred apart my voice box by shouting Jimin since the premiere and I broke my bed while jumping by seeing this version of Jimin. My goshhhh, he is insane. He has undoubtedly delivered this mv and song with his killing charisma and amazing vocal and dancing techniques.
The poem that is written on his body is by the German poet Rainer Maria Rilke. It's called "ich lebe mein Leben in wachsenden Ringen". It compares the rings of a tree with life, you can see darker and brighter times in those rings. Sometimes theyre even missing. You can create your circle of life on your own, you can be whatever and whoever you want in you next year or while creating your next ring :) But hey SOTY. It's a masterpiece. Period.
The callbacks to BTS lyrics and BTS choreography were completely reset into this gorgeous work. He's spent so long being a yin-yang of cute bubbly gigglebox and fierce dancer that I don't we could have expected anything like this from him. It's a powerful video, the song is excellent, and nobody else on this planet could do this and get the same reaction as we're all having. He's unmatched.
I recognized a few lyrics like the reference to "Butterfly", and the choreo from "Lie" as well as a few other BTS dance moves. The opening sequence reminds of J-Hope's MAMA performance of MORE. I'm so happy for all of them to finally be free of all the restrictions they have been under for so many years just to bring us what ARMY expected from them as idols.
