    Last time I went to Caymans I brought 4 rods with me, all bass rods. I just put 65- 85lb braid on them. I threw top water lures from the beach where we were staying. Managed to catch a 40lb tarpon, several barracuda, lots of jacks, and lost a lure to some kind of shark. Only people who gave me funny looks were the other vacationers. I couldn’t believe I was the only one on the plane with fishing gear. Lol

    Brian, remember that in that environment. Your catches might come from the dry land. Perhaps more easy than from boat. Often in the bare edges of the breaking surf on beaches or rocks. Along those beaches etc. Have a look at how the English shoreline anglers fish with artificials for stripe-less European saltwater bass. And you'll be fully dialled in. They'll use things like top water chuggers and all kinds of things. But the casts from shore. In saltwater angling. In that kind of environment there. Are ridiculous short at times (particularly where you have any kind of swell or breaks on shore). The fish are literally just behind that. If they are anywhere. It feels often, like you're throwing a line across a beach (you learn to stand on land). And throw just barely far enough. To wet your bait. Your fly or whatever you're throwing. They throw suspending jerk baits along shores, literally a few feet often. To catch saltwater bass here. You'd assume they are 'out there'. But not so.

    • @academicmailbox7798
      @academicmailbox7798 2 года назад

      With a fly rod, the most efficient cast I often think. Is straight parallel down along a shoreline break or riffle. If you've identified the right ambush point that saltwater predators like to hunt along (same as freshwater bass on lakes get glued to certain kinds or banks or shoreline). By casting parallel to the water edge. Instead of straight out. I think you're probably getting a better angle (as I said, those fish are usually right up at that edge, if they are anywhere). The ones that are actively hunting. Some of the Danish sea trout (sea-run brown trout), fish that coastline. Really tight to shoreline too. With success. You'd never imagine that large fish hunt that close. But they do. The English saltwater shoreline anglers are probably the best at it by now. Because they've caughg up, anc they use almost exactly the same baits, lures and artificials. As the professional freshwater bass anglers do. Megabass, Zman, Senko etc.

    • @academicmailbox7798
      @academicmailbox7798 2 года назад

      With those bonefish too. I think they could position several feet 'off shore', away from 'the edge' breaks. But that's irrelevant to the cast. Because those bonefish are sight fishing. They'll have eyes fixed on anything that gets trapped against the surf break. And then stumbles out towards them. They'll cover several yards distance from their concealment, to smash that bait along the edge. And return to depth again. And they'll follow that edge of the saltwater. The whole ways in with the tide, and back out again. Feeding opportunistically like that. So really, where you always want to be working. Is along that edge (same as the six inch shallow crawfish bite on Pickwick in the Toyota championship last autumn). You're cast has to be to inches. Even the fish may be positioned deeper (with eyes on the breaking shoreline). I'd say a plastic creature bait hurled into shallow pockets (standing back on land and just pitching it). A short distance, could draw monsters. Just out of nowhere. The bait just needs to make the right splash in those shallow regions, and it's mince meat.
