jeez please don't say that they might put it behind a patron wall make sure you get their patron when you get income from their help, to show real love back
3 years later just watching this entire video. Incredible amount of golden insights. Learned a ton that I can apply to my sales and consultation calls. Blair is a different animal and the same beast.
This was heavely packed! There is a lot l learnt from this video, thank you so so so much Chris, the team and Blair for putting this out to the world for us to see and learn
Taking notes, taking notes. I was drawing while listening to the show, stopping to write down the best chunk! I'm at the beginning of my illustration carriere and the parts "Learn to be unemotional about money" & "say a price and be comfortable in the silence" are gold. Way too often we try to fill that silence and end-up shooting a bullet into our own foot! Keep on doing that incredible work! Love from Finland!
Watching this for the third time. This is amongst the greatest videos by The Futur about value based pricing and the business of design. So much good advice and food for thought. The fact that it hasn't blown up yet is baffling.
I think Mr Blair Enns is an incredibly intelligent and successful man with much wisdom, the end was a good close, bring in the empathy. I also caution creatives to remember that there is a journey to mastering brilliance so don't be hasty if you can afford it, the drawing in the Sistine chapel wasn't created in a day so let yourself grow. As much as I agree that most of the concepts here can be profitable, Artists should deliver to their fullest satisfaction/potential as much as they desire because that's also what we are here for. To create work with much value that we are proud of and should also be well compensated. Artists genuinely love to deliver a high level of value because in the end, whatever value or creative energy you put out there's going to create an equal and opposite impact. We are inspired by great Artists and the renaissance man like Leonardo, Michelangelo, Socrates and other incredible creatives because they put out their best work into the universe. Focus your energy on delivering the highest value out there for your clients. Put out work that you too can celebrate, you are not a machine designed only to be paid.
In regard to Chris' question at 1:04:53, he seems to be confusing "value" for effort. I agree that each client (regardless of the price) deserves 100% effort and that most creatives struggle to provide anything less. What I think Blair is suggesting though, is that even the lowest amount in your bracketed pricing should already account for this 100% effort. Providing additional services that you would otherwise charge for ("above and beyond" type mentality) is thoughtful, but it leaves money on the table and may leave your client wondering how (for someone so expensive) you had time to provide an extra service at no extra cost. [Were they overcharged from the beginning? Did they get everything they could've from the deal? Maybe since I know you're capable of more, Ill hold you to it next time. Or, maybe I'd like to request a detailed receipt with a breakdown (justification) of the price.] To me, it's most honest and secure to perform exactly what was agreed upon. Absolutely nothing less, but also nothing more.
As a Graphic Design student, I really feel like I get valuable information when I watch your videos. It feels like it can just about match the quality of the college courses
WOOOOOOOW! He just described my creative personality! 'The nature of the creative personality is to want to solve the problem that you have not previously solved!' That is one of my big issues! This explains a lot lot about me. As an Art Director I want to learn about everything even if I feel the need to specialise in something. My mind is going to next level right now! Just achieved black mind-belt in something:) HAHA!
I purchased the book several months ago. Read it once. Read it twice. Read it 3 times and will read it again before year's end. This is my second viewing of this video and each time I learn something new.
Can I like this 5 times ? Wonderful live stream with Blair Enns! I started watching live but fell a sleep (personal issues not because of the stream)so I had to watch the replay. Thanks Chris, Blair, and the Futur people!
I rewatch these videos and learn something new every time. I really appreciate Blairs blunt approach, I think it's the perfect antidote for the timid creative. The Baker video is just as brilliant. In fact, i'm heading over there to watch it again.
I come back and watch this video a fair amount. It is one of the best videos on all of RUclips. Absolutely full of great content. Shocking that this only has around 56k views. Thank you for making this live stream video and making it available.
I watch this video more than any video on The Futur channel. I use it as inspiration and guidance before almost every client consultation. I'm so happy with the education I get from this channel and I've considered sending 10% several times and I will one day. Thank you, Chris and staff. Your info has forever changed my perspective and opportunity in the market and in my personal life.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this conversation... @Chris, the pause was just brilliant! I needed to laugh out loud today. Thanks. I now have to get his books and then listen to this conversation a few more times. Thanks for amazing content @The Futur
On efficiency vs innovation, when you reduce waste and seek to become more efficient, you also become less innovative. Business concepts like this can be so complex and counter-intuitive, great insight! Tracking time is not always the best way! We need the freedom to fail.
This is rich gold - thank you guys for putting this out there Ah! Alan Weiss that is such a good input I am enjoying this so much On the question of over-deliver - Alan Weiss says "Promise and deliver" over-delivery puts you on a run-away treadmill
Very nice session. I have been to Poland many times 🇵🇱 it’s an amazing countries and with very hard working talented people. Warsaw is my favorite..Highly recommend.
Yaa!!! Fantastic Video In India here no hours charge, Designer charge on project... The biggest drawback is, client want free work here, if the artist say any charges Client don't replay... This is the biggest problem here. Nice info once again. Cheers!!
This conversation is blowing my head away. I definitely need a marketing man to handle all of this information for me and take actions. Very interesting indeed though. Money is energy. I wish I had known before. Love from London.
Account supervisor of Y&R... In Brazil we have Roberto Justus, which was the "Trump" of "The Apprentice" show over here. He is one of the owners of Y&R. As a business man, he is such an inspiration.
I imagine over deliverying, especially say physical commodities causes several problems one being price distortion: if the client gets used to you giving them freebies, they might start to make decisions that don't accurately reflect real market dynamics. Also they company has to store all the extra stuff you sent them, maybe it's more than they can realistically sell. Even ideas and designs - oh this firm sent over so many great designs on things we didn't even ask for! - maybe they feel compelled to change things about their business that were best left alone.
I know you know it. But, you're awesome. This one is now at my top favorite interviews/streams/classes/lectures/conversations, etc. Keep it up, guys!!!
That was truly incredible, so much new knowledge that I had not heard before despite being an adamant follower of the Futr as well as old knowledge that decided resonate.
Man, I have commented this before on the Futur but this conversation makes it comes up again. In my opinion this all would be so much more helpful if we could bring this down from the millions of dollars-conversation down to the tens of thousands of dollars-conversation. Hoping for those conversations! Same conversations just switch the numbers haha. That would actually do something for me. This is great, of course. All helpful!
I really loved this episode a lot! Huge fan of Blair Enns and all the words he speaks. My question is on average at what age do you figure out after exploring all these ideas does it click that this is the thing I want to do.
It's clear that Blair dominates all these business dealings because he has the super-power of not blinking. Need to up my eye moisture game.
could backfire if done wrong 😐😭🥲
He has onion in his shirt pocket.
This video is meant to be watched more than once. So many gems...
Agreed. Just going through it again.

Damn the value on this channel is a blessing - Thank you !

These are potentially the most critical of all lessons for creatives. Thank you so much for sharing this series with the world. BIG RESPECT!
4 years too late, but this is great evergreen advice, and applies to knowledge consultancy as much as design, appreciated ❤
honestly one of the best conversations about pricing I have seen in general and from The Futur. Way to go guys!
