  • George VI was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth from 11 December 1936 until his death in 1952. He was the Father of the current monarch, Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon. He ascended the throne upon the abdication of his brother, Edward VIII (The Duke of Windsor).

George VI refused to leave London during The Blitz. The Foreign Office urged the entire royal family to not only leave London but Britain, so that they would be safe in case of invasion. The Queen declared: "The children will not leave unless I do. I shall not leave unless their father does, and the king will not leave the country in any circumstances, whatever." And yes, the Luftwaffe bombed Buckingham Palace. Now you know where Elizabeth gets her nerve. George VI and Elizabeth II never wanted to be on the throne, but they did their duty. Perhaps a reluctant monarch is the best one, after all.

A great man, father and King who was never trained to be King but took on the role with dignity. As with Churchill the King never left his people in WWII. He formed a huge bond with them by staying with them, especially when he was injured when Buckingham Palace was bombed, and leading them to victory. The Queen, when asked by an American reporter, why the children were not being sent to Canada for safety she replied:
"They will never leave without me. I will never leave without my husband. He will never leave his people!"
He knew combat and what it entailed as his younger brother was killed in WWII, he himself served in the Royal Navy and was at Jutland in WWI and later in the RAF. He saw his future son in law follow him into combat in the RN in WWII and he saw his daughter and future Queen serve as a mechanic in the Army in WWII.

Princess Margaret, in an interview later in her life, said it was very foolish to not train the so-called "spare" to the heir to the throne. She was referring to her never receiving the sort of training and schooling her elder sister received. She pointed out that not only was her father the second son of George V, but her grandfather, George V himself, was born the second son of the future Edward VII (his elder brother died before their father became King). Margaret felt it was a wise idea to train the next in line as well as the direct heir, just in case.

If you knew King George VI, then you know, no man was ever so full of love, honor, strength and grace. He had so much in him he spread it wide through the Commonwealth and the entire world. He knew when Elizabeth left for Africa, he would never see her again. He sent her because the people needed her. The Crown is for the people. Because his earthly body could not go, he sent her. The Crown is not an object. It is a living, breathing, servant of the people. George knew, however painful to him, the Crown comes first. Edward VIII was not capable of the honor, sacrifice and duty to the people the Crown requires. The Crown rules by Divine Right. It is by the Grace of God, George VI was given the task. God save the King.

The Duke Windsor did that "unofficial state visit" without permission from the government and the royal family. All this "he was niave" business is bollocks because tensions were running high between Germany, Britain and the rest of Europe when his father was on the throne and the Duke would know that but he went ahead with that visit anyway. When France fell he and Wallis fled to a friend who was a known Nazi sympathiser and had to be threatend with a court martial off the British government to leave and go to the Bahamas and badically rule and he moaned about that despite living in luxury and beautiful weather whilst Britain was being bombed to pieces and living on rations he was a very selfish and self indulfed child who never grew up

"Duty, Honour, Country" - those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be. They are your rallying point to build courage when courage seems to fail, to regain faith when there seems to be little cause for faith, to create hope when hope becomes forlorn".
During the dark days of 1940-41 no one except perhaps Churchill, displayed those qualities MacArthur was talking about, and set an example for others to follow.

If there is a prequel, it should be about the life of Mary of Teck. What a life she lived! She was born into a minor royal family, betrothed to an heir to another throne, lost her fiancee, married his brother, was the mother to two kings, lived through two world wars, and survived long enough to see her granddaughter become Queen. It could be divided into three segments like THE CROWN: the years prior to becoming Queen (pre-1910), her time as Queen, (1910-1936), and until her passing (1936-1953). It would be the perfect bridge between VICTORIA and THE CROWN.

I would watch something like that! It would be worth it just to see her mistreatment of her own children, especially Bertie, given the way SHE was bullied as a teenager. The Edwardian era also fascinates me. Thanks to old Vickie refusing to train him properly or gradually give him responsibilities in the affairs of State, everyone thought he was going to be a flop as King. However, he surprised many people and was not only well liked as he was affable, but he was rather good at diplomacy and foreign affairs. He DID manage to stave off World War I when he was alive.

This video is wonderful, I love Jared Harris and his portrayal of King George VI. Part of me wishes that the creators of The Crown would make a limited prequel series about his rule. Just like..one season, maybe 6 episodes, let Jared Harris have more time with that role.
This video also made me think about King George's brother, David (the King that abdicated for the woman he loved, Wallis Simpson). It made me think about how I want to commend the show because its really good at making you 'feel' for David even tho he's snotty and has little quips about everyone. But the couple seemed to truly love each other and was one of the few, in the royal family, that did NOT divorce so....heh. But then the show is suddenly all... "OH BTW, TOTAL NAZI SYMPATHIZER, WAS TOTALLY GOING TO SELL OUT HIS BROTHER FOR THE CROWN LOL" lol. Well done, The Crown.

Here is a man who had doubts about his own daughters future husband and even took her on a trip around the world to separate them for a while.
Charles made a bad marriage. Even us commoners here in the Colonies can do THAT! But from all appearances, Charles loves his sons and tried at least to become a good father. Whatever Harry became, I think, had a lot to do with his mother's death and one cannot blame Charles for that. But Wills turned out fine and most people agree he will make a FINE king one day. King George said that you need the right person by your side. I think Charles now HAS that person. Were he to come back today, I think, good man that he was, that King George would acknowledge a grave error in choice but say in the end, Charles did the correct thing.

However I think the added stress of being unprepared and thrust into the role of King really contributed to Bertie's death at an earlier age. He was weak (in the physical sense) and got old before his time
Regarding Churchill, he was a cigar smoker and, like MOST cigar smokers, do not inhale like cigarette smokers do. As a general rule, cigar and pipe smokers live much longer than cigarette smokers. I used to smoke cigarettes myself as well as a pipe and the occasional cigar. When I quit, a couple of my doctors told me it was okay to smoke my pipe as long as I didn't inhale. In fact, a recent study shows that pipe smokers actually live LONGER than non smokers. Because 1) a LITTLE bit of nicotine is actually good for you (just like alcohol) and 2) pipe smokers are generally more relaxed.
