- Maynard James Keenan is a singer, songwriter, producer, winemaker, and actor, best known as the vocalist for Grammy Award-winning rock band Tool, Puscifer, and A Perfect Circle. His new book "A Perfect Union of Contrary Things" is available now.
It's crazy how soft spoken he is considering he has so much power in his voice.
Probably on purpose to preserve it
I feel he’s not impressed with the interview. Why.
I thought the same thing about him being so soft spoken with such a powerful voice. Then I also thought the same thing that it was to preserve it. Proof that it's true =D
Exactly @Nick Pease. He was very shy and didn't like huge crowds, but with practice and time he learned to overcome it. It's such a true scenario as I am a singer and guitarist, which I love, but one time I wanted to try just singing and it was so fuckin scary, awkward, and different than having a guitar with me. :)

I say this out of love and as a rabid fan of Tool: I hope every Tool fan listens to his explanation of Tool's recording process starting at 1:23:00 and chills out about when the next album is coming.
Although there's a part of me that hopes they record enough material for a double album. Pie-in-the-sky, I know.
Wonderful interview, probably my favorite Maynard interview ever.
Aaron Warren I'm really glad he layed that all out. It's all these media outlets like loudwire and blabbermouth that rile up all the fans. as a matter of fact theyre doing that now , but i doubt the majority of facebookers will bother to even listen to this interview
George Allen Similarly for all the same complainers and with the last two podcasts that MJK has done with Joe.
you're a god
It's nice to hear Maynard finally unsarcastically go so in-depth on the Tool creative processes.
WTF! I watched this whole thing expecting to see Maynard G. Krebs.
finally a decent, unsarcastic comment... on this shitty shitpost-board
I always thought he was the main brain of the Band....seems like not....seems the musician are much more behind it then him....I guessed its because the lyrics were so personal, i thought the whole mood was from MJK
Xavier .Garand I think that is a common misconception. He writes the lyrics after the music is done.
Xavier .Garand I recently went and saw them, and he hid behind Danny the entire time lol. He still sang excellently, but you really couldn't see him at all. Seemed like he was trying to put emphasis on the music rather than on the people. It was beautiful.

Steve Burke
Insane how right he was when saying This. And insane how it’s unfolding worldwide.
Yep
"What if I am wrong about all this" That is a good way to get to the truth if you ask me. I practice that constantly.
I always enjoy listening to Maynard. Just a calm-toned, humble, and intellectual human being. I think he's been on Joe Rogan's podcast three times now and this was definitely my favorite.
Kyle Phipps Maynard would bum you tf
I'm slightly confused on what your comment means and what it has to do with mine.
Maynard: "It spirals out into all these other areas..." Me:
Spiral out, keep going
Spiral out, keep going
Spiral out, keep going
Spiral out, keep going
Mal Dk hell yeah!
Mal Dk same same
also when he started talking about getting your hands dirty i immediately started thinking of stinkfist
William Kildea spooky 0.0
When maynard say's "Spiral", drink
So sad this is experience #986. One more and it would have been 987, a Fib number and the 9-8-7 bar sequence in Lateralus.
Fuk I'm so glad someone noticed that lol
Mechanicus how I this a iamverysmart comment? He’s not being pretentious he made a simple coincidental observation. Just because the comment pertains to math doesn’t mean it’s pretentious. You sound like you go out of your way to not seem unliked by people or be put into a certain group that you end up being an asshole and judgmental to people. You’re the pretentious one her guy.
Mechanicus by your logic every person who studies or works in a STEM field is pretentious, which, don’t get me wrong some can be. This doesn’t mean they all are.

Coming back after tool blew my mind at download festival 🤘
Damn I'm jealous!
That was the best gig out of the 6 I've seen from them it was so loud 🔊 😀 great day.
The Tool performance was worth all of the 220 the ticket cost, easily the best show i have ever seen. The Music, the visuals, the band, everything was so on point - it just totally blew me away.
that guy over there... i was there too! :P
Fezzant wish I could appreciate it more, maybe my attitude towards drugs is the thing (against them) but it’s was good, I’ll say that. The lack of interaction from MJK was meh. But I was at the front, was cool
Maynard is the best vocalist I've ever heard. Lyrics, presentations and sound
No doubt he is one of the all time great front men.
Agreed Ben. He is the best ever bro. Period. I’ve seen him love 15 times. Tool 10, APC 5. I am amazed every time.
Indeed, he is great at everything he does, as far as I know.

Joe, may I suggest Les Claypool for a podcast guest?

when Maynard sings it's just amazing. I love it so much I can't even express it with words.

Yessss his music always gives me Ghost bumps
MJK is só right @ 27:05! It’s all about introspection , self evaluation and willing to being open. Not only in thinking but be willing to investigate yourself in body, mind and soul. Having the courage to be vulnerable. I know cause I took that road 30 years ago, first as a student, than as a teacher but... learning from my students. It’s actually not that hard once you start that journey. I’ll always be a student, being open to investigate myself.
Ive seen tool live at least 7 times and some how this is first time I've seen Maynard's face lol.
So you’ve been to every live show they’ve ever done?
@@BostonsF1nest ???

I think he was joking about how Tool barely does any shows. Calm tf down lol
Also holy shit this dude is like a stone cold zen killer. I've never seen anyone be so calm with Joe, normally people let Joe get under their skins pretty quickly. This is a solid dude.
TrueTreeRadio -- Yeah. I get that an unfamiliar audience finds him/this episode boring, but for MJK fans, this is cool as hell. He raaaaaarely does interviews or any public appearances outside of touring and shows, but somehow he's always come on here and been comfortable and open. All love for an MJK episode.
I went to a Tool and A Perfect Circle concert within months of each other, and I have tried to explain the experience multiple times but for whatever reason I feel like I fall short of being able to truly tell you what it was like. All I've been able to say is "you need to go yourself."

I just witnessed Maynard use "Spiral out" in an actual regular ol' convo. My life is a bit more of a happy moment now. Thank you Rogan for making this possible.
He's such an interesting person, so much going on and he's legitimately passionate about each thing. He talks about what he loves but isn't afraid to say "I don't know". Seems like a good dude.
His remark about trying to get out of other people's way while driving was a nice perspective. He may come across as a disinterested jerk, but it seems like he's actually quite the idealist.

It’s true though. Maynard usually hangs back with no lights on him. You can’t see him at all most of the time. This has been this case since the beginning of the millennium. In the 90’s, Maynard was a very up-front, fascinating performer. People have described it as an alien trying to control a human body and dance. He seems to be in a trance and he claims that was often the case. You can see it online, especially during “push-it”. Just search “Tool push-it 1996” for a sample.

Swear to god man.. That would be a 3 hour rant
@@docilecare9981 he doesn't rant but i get you he does like to talk
I would love to see him on this podcast bouncing off of Joe Rogan! Eddie Vedder or Les Claypool I'd love to see on the podcast!
Get Aaron Lewis on the show

David Farahnik whats it to ya
David Farahnik does the rest of his name not give it away?
I'm not even a realTool fan in that Ive listened to a bit of Tool here and there on and off since from my teen years into adulthood but never actually got into them..but Maynard is real as F and thats always been apparent.
Thank you Joe Rogan and guests for giving me something worth while to think about every day. Maynard, hurry up and release a new tool album!
Lol you must not have been listening to Maynard when he mentioned that the holdup isn't him :)
Amazing Joe's impressions of McGregor, really funny. :D
Jakub Zaguła I could watch the whole special just of that :D
I think "Meteor" was a safe word. Maynard started getting uncomfortable about some of the political talk, and kept repeating it and then they changed the subject abruptly. heheheh
That's because he is pretty much a political centrist and he doesn't like to push his opinions on others.
timwins31 What APC album are you referring to please?
He’s talking about eat the elephant. It’s the worst of his work but still a masterpiece
@timwins31 Well said good sir!
I think he genuinely wants a meteor to wipe out most of us
This man is the definition between a musician and artist. James is incredible
