thanks for the reply Fuzz. My comment was really just to be funny. Im a huge Billy Strings fan. He can play any genre of music. He even has a solo vocal of an old gospel song which is amazing. Very true.. Billy is an all American!
He’s from a really rural hillybilly town in Michigan though. One of those towns that if you were dropped into it and didn’t know any better you’d probably guess you were in the south. So I get what you’re saying. He’s a pretty progressive person but he definitely has a good ole’ boy thing going on too.
@@joshualawson4440 Billy Strings was born William Apostol on October 3, 1992, in Lansing, Michigan and raised in Morehead, Kentucky, before his family moved to Muir, Michigan. He then moved to Traverse City, Michigan.

What a treat would've loved to have been there for that! Bravo Billy very few can really pull that song off with the skill and showmanship that you possess!
In all these years after that plane went down, THIS does them justice! None since the original members made it so climactic! Well done! And the anthem continues
ken barr no question AC is in heaven enjoying this with Ronnie, but BS is mostly playing Gary’s iconic slide part here. AC’s scorching lead runs came in the outro.
He could do covers of multiple songs by the Byrds, the Yardbirds, and the Eagles. Little Wing, Rockin' Robin, Surfin' Bird (aka Bird is the Word), um, what else ... Wind Beneath My Wings? Broken Wings? I'm running out of bird-themed songs and groups. A Flock of Seagulls. Robin Thicke? Blackbird by the Beatles. The song Dirty Boulevard by Lou Reed for the lyric "fly fly away, from this dirty boulevard". Oh, when my daughter was younger she used to love The Duck Song (it's a children's song, you can find it on RUclips). On Sesame Street Bert had a song about how much he loved pigeons. Okay, now I'm officially out of ideas, but that could make a pretty full concert.
But how many were shot!? Some hardcore Lynyrd Skynyrd fans might not find the humor. They'd be sayin, "Gimme back my bullets"! (They are from my hometown) I find it hilarious and coming from Billy Strings, appropriate! Did he finish out the show with a mixed melody of "Dust in a Baggie/Needle & Spoon"?
Okay, musically, I sorta feel like Wayne Campbell “we’re not worthy” kinda deal going on… but once the video and music stopped, I was left wondering how much dust in baggie it takes for someone to get up on stage dressed as a giant bird to play the hell outta Freebird like that? I hope this guy lives a long, fruitful, happy life, filled with love and music!
Billy and friends costume up once in awhile. If they weren't the best musicians in the world, maybe it wouldn't work. But, with these guys it just comes across as humility being willing to make fun of themselves in the midst of their absolute mastery.
I feel like this entire performance was almost playtime for ol' Billy Strings. How could it not be? ***He's playing Free Bird wearing a fucking Bald Eagle costume.*** You can't be playing SERIOUS guitar like that on stage. BUT... I'm convinced. Billy can fucking SHRED when he's inspired. You cant give even a passable start-to-finish rendition of Free Bird on electric guitar with all those people watching without knowing your way around a guitar. This boy can fucking BOOGIE. I just wish he played electric more often.
Ya all should check out his guitar work on Voodoo Chile w/Umphrey's McGee and definitely watch "king and strings" from rooster walk 10 which features him AND Marcus King
Billy forgetting the words at 3:10 had me cracking up lmao. I've read Billy talking about how he plays other genres and incorporates those into his bluegrass picking, really cool to see another genre in action!
keep practicing. I want to see , and hear Billy, play the electric guittar on the level with what he does with the acustic. Then we really will hear something!
He is. His acoustic playing isn’t all that mind blowing either. He is really solid. His technique is spot on. But he is not a guitar God. Dude is just a really solid musician. I think of him like a Gary Rossington. And Gary is one of my favorite players. Not as smokin as Collins, but solid. Or maybe like Malcolm Young. Not the face melting frontman his brother was, but one of the most tight solid players to rock. That’s what Billy is IMO. better than I’ll ever be mind you haha EDIT - Aight people, I overlooked that he rarely uses common techniques most people use for “shredding” and playing quickly, and mainly flatpicks everything, which is worlds more difficult. I don’t think anyone else can flatpick as proficient as Billy.
blackz06 maybe my glass is half full and I need a new outlook. Maybe there are just a lot of great musicians at different levels. Honestly at what point are you “great”? Its all relative. I have NO desire to learn sweep picking. I have no desire to speed play, like dragonforce style. I enjoy good blues and some solid rock. Blues is my favorite to play. I love that it really lets me release my emotions in music form. So for me, being great is not having to think about what im playing, because I know the intervals so well. Just be able to emote naturally and let my emotions come out effortlessly through my fingers. To me, that is when I will be great.
Electric guitar is all about TONE. If you don’t have that tone-lightning speed doesn’t come across as well and won’t save the day! I think Strings should do an Acoustic version.
@bm phil It is custom built by his grandfather when he was serving time in prison. He talks about it in this video: ruclips.net/video/cSlGEFY4nTg/видео.html

Thankfully the 70's gave us Ed Gary Allen and Steve to pave the way for Billy, nice job
I love it when the outfits match the song. Really helps me get into the mood of the music. Way to go Billy and band!
So either he wore that outfit for a whole gig just for this one song or he planned a whole show of bird related tunes...
