Backyard Tropical Food Forest in Northern California
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 20 май 2024
- Last year I transformed my backyard into a subtropical food forest where I'm now growing hundreds of of edible plants including tropical and subtropical fruits that don't normally grow in my zone (9b). I'll take you on a tour of my densely planted backyard jungle in this first video on my new series, to show you that it's possible to grow tropical plants in non tropical climates. In future videos I'll show you exactly how I created this food forest and everything I'm doing to maintain it through the years.

Oh man this far exceeded my expectations; not only happy about more content but how your gardens have turned out!! WORTH THE WAIT.
Thank you so much! its taken a while to make this video, but I'm happy with how it turned out
Can you share your sources for where to buy these plants? It’s so hard when so many times online stores do not ship to CA.
@@sharabenson you can purchase tropical trees @ EKT nursery in Lakewood CA or Mimosa nursery in LA
@@artgarcia2340 thank you, I’ll look into those places!
@@sharabensonglad to help
this is so epic! love these tours and crazy how much of a forest you created in 3 years
Thank you! It’s been a lot of fun to watch it all grow and take shape
I think he said 8 months ago the area was bare?
@@TropicalGardenGuy Yeah, that didn't track for me either. Maybe he transplanted a bunch of older trees for this "instant forest"? I guess I could have an "instant forest" in 8 months if I did that too.😐
Do you have baby tree for sale? Thanks
Every Californian should take advantage of our great weather
Definitely!
I am in Sacramento County - 9b also. I also created a Food Forest in both front and back yard. First, I had nursed plants while living in a duplex for the years I was looking for a home. I brought those, several blackberry, lemon, and fruit trees in pots. Planted those and began layering more in. Used card board with wood chips from a neighbor tree trimmer. Soul is still clay where bare but all areas where I can get the plants to grow perennial, the souls are holding lots of moisture. Trying adding beneficial nematodes this year. Added those under mulch from tree leaves that fell last fall. I keep a spreadsheet of well over 100 plants that work. I have been keeping a journal for years, over a decade. I update my spreadsheet every year when plants die and I add plants. I have shared that sheet in PDF for friends. I created a table of plants to seed each season in our home to plant annual vegetables and flowers. So good to see and hear someone else doing similar in Northern California. I have two neighbors who also have similar yards. I began this project to model after my grandparents who grew the fruits and vegetables I grew up with in the 70s. I grew up starting in the garden with my grandpa at age two. A friend who is Amish used to use my front yard for his family. He also brought his toddler daughter to garden with him. He grew where until his family moved back to their Amish country across the USA.
I’d love to see that PDF!
Would love to see the PDF also, please, am also in the same county, thank you.
Would love the pdf as well!! 🥰
I don't know where to start...
Your next project is obvious. You need to make a grey water system. The detritus from your plants with your grey water will help you grow a carbon rich soil exponentially. What you have done is commendable but you need to evolve to the next phase.
Thanks for describing the flavours so clearly.
My pleasure 😊
Your gardening is amazing, and your videomaking is top-tier! Your diction, editing and everything makes for a very nice viewing experience and definitely deserves recognition. Thanks!
Thank you so much! I put a lot of time and effort into making these videos, and take a lot of pride in them, so I really appreciate your feedback and support!
Plus he’s a hottie…
Yes… finally a new video!!!! Always one of my most anticipated RUclipsrs. Wow Kyle!!! The transformation is AMAZING!!!
Thank you!
Kyle. Amazing! Can you tell us where you purchased most of your unusual subtropical trees such as Longan and Lychee? Please🙏
WOW! Your garden is amazing! I grew up in Bangladesh eating all these tropical fruits. I miss them so much. I live in Rocklin, CA, which is in greater Sacramento. Last few years I watched many videos of tropical fruit gardens in the Central Valley and got inspired. Last spring, I also started my tropical garden. I have 30+ tropical fruit trees in my garden now. Since this winter was very warm, all my plants are thriving. Thank you for making these videos and inspiring us. I would love to visit your garden in person if that is possible. Thank you.
I’m also in the central valley is there info in the area you would be willing to share ?

Imagine if all of our backyards were like this man's, we would end hunger in the US. Too bad it's common to think grass is beautiful.
We all just have to start spreading the word and showing the world what’s possible by leading with examples like this! Thank you Mark!
Grasses are dead brown in late spring through summer here in my 9b zone area. So grass is not even beautiful except in winter here.
@@urbanfarmstead hello from so cal I have a little garden in my side yard now expanding to my hill in my backyard alot of seeds just planted alot of rain here
Imagine communities dedicated public green spaces to communal gardening.

Wow. All your hard work is paying off beautifully! The visuals are amazing and your detailed descriptions of each plant could not be better! Thank you!
Thank you so much!
The pink jambu is freaking awesome. It tastes very light and juicy.
I grew up in Colombia and we ate guavas(guayaba) and zapotes, I have seen your videos before and to see your garden is amazing.pls keep making videos I love them.
Yum! That’s awesome! Thank you
You're a hero man. I love this and I'm so jealous of your zone 9b. This brings so much joy to watch this. I was born and raised in the tropics now in 8b. Thank you for all of this joy.
Glad you enjoyed it! Hopefully you’re still able to grow some fun stuff there in your zone
Im in 10a and idk how he pulls this off
This 9b is very different from the 9b here in Phoenix. It is very difficult to pull off this forest here. I am jealous
I am in 8a/b overlap region and I am also so very jealous and wondering just how much of this I could accomplish in my own yard 😅
@setha6163 It comes down to water. Having lived in both Hawaii and Washington state ( west) I got to North Texas and understood how different the land there would look if they got 60 inches of rain a year..... seriously the climate here. Live in Sacramento and talk about mild. If I had the land and the time.....
Wow! Wow! After a few years, your garden turned to be a fruit jungle! Amazing for a small space, tons of fruits!
Thank you! Yeah and this section is less than a year old!
Great to see a new video. I love your garden.
Thanks so much!
As someone who live in tropical climates, i have some of these plants. A year back i have no idea the advantages that i could get from living in the tropical climates, and now after few months watching and seeing those who grows tropical plants over out there just open my eyes that now i can use my empty garden as my treasure.
Being someone who trying to self sufficient and slow living by producing and selling everything from my own garden just giving my own satisfaction
Wow! What an amazing tropical garden. Great video!
Thanks so much!
With the increasing cost of food people really need to start growing something on their own. Even if you don't have a yard you can grow things in pots. It will save some money and last longer. Like Ron Finley said, growing your own food is like printing your own money.
I live in Sacramento region too. Never thought it’s possible to grow these tropical fruits. ❤ Now I have some new goals!!
Kyle you’re the “gardener”
Amazing what you have accomplished over the years ❤
Thank you
One of the most underrated channels on RUclips
We grow a lot of these fruits here in Hawaii and it was very interesting to see how they grow there. We have a fruit that looks identical to the Wax Jambu you have that we call White Mountain Apple. 🤙
Very cool! Thank you for sharing!
The number of plants you could fit in such a small space is unbelievable, God bless you!
Thank you so much!
Having your own food forest is the best thing. I wish I could get more tropical trees. This is amazing, thanks for sharing
Am blown away at how everything has grown. Marvelous.
It is so encouraging to see your what you’ve done with your space! And the videos are incredibly well done and worth the wait. Looking forward to the next one! Thank you!
Kyle, I enjoy all your content but this tour was incredible, especially with your new tropical section at only 8 months in the ground. Near Phoenix, Arizona we got a little colder this year with a week under freezing and down to 26 in my yard so my uncovered subtropical plants look a little rough. The growth your trees achieved is phenomenal. Love the ice cream bean trees. I put in 6 this past year. Congrats on establishing paradise out your back door!
Thank you! It’s been a very interesting and fun project and I’m surprised every day by how well it’s all doing, but our mild winter this year helped a ton! Hope you’d bounce back well this spring
That mimi papaya is very unique,so much to learn from you Sir
Thank you for sharing
This man is living the dream! Love the videos keep em coming!
Thanks! Living my dream as well
Your hard work is paying off. Well done
Much appreciated
My boyfriend and I love your videos! We live in Nevada County but I attend Sacramento State for software engineering and my boyfriend's going to the fire academy at Sierra College. We've crammed as many fruit trees and plants in our tiny yard as possible! Us and our 14 month old son are obsessed with gardening and love learning as much as we can from you! We're hoping one day to move closer to the Sacramento/Roseville area and be able to have an amazing garden like yours!
Who does all your filming and editing? You even tell a story well with your production and b-roll. It all works so well together. Like I’m watching a legit produced show.
Good job on all of it. It inspires me to make my own RUclips channel. Based around the things I do and love in my life. Thank you!
I am very much new to gardening. Please put a video on fertilizing and insects. Thank you!! Your pruning video was very useful.
Beautiful Garden, Love Life Like This, Thank you for sharing.
So Much Fun to see how your plan turned out!
Can’t wait to see your step by step process on your journey to a tropical food forest. Humble beginnings
Your garden is absolutely wonderful. Thank you for sharing.
@urbanfarmstead it would be interesting to have a top down / drone shot view of your garden to better understand the design (cardinal directions, dimensions, density) of the different areas (orchard, raised beds, subtropical area etc), as well as the total surface of your garden. Thanks for the great videos!
That would be cool. I just have to find someone who will let me use their drone
This is so awesome , pink guava and the small Andy papaya , lots of hardwork , happy gardening
I adore your soil. I’m a composter in Houston, Tx and my edible container garden thrives, even through the freeze. Covered of course. So happy I found your channel.
Wow, how beautiful! I live in Sacramento, and you inspire me!!
This is amazing! Will need an update here in the summer months!
thanks for taking me on a tropical tour of the world, but you're practically next door, really good stuff you're doing....
Beautiful forest garden!. I love nature! You are doing good job.
I have never seen this type of papaya before. Your beautiful garden is loaded with many varieties of fruits/veggies, awesome yard designing really enjoying your videos. ❤❤❤
Great job! Can't wait to see the rest of the series!
Thank you!
Another top tier video, Kyle! It's quite the sight to see all these lovely tropical trees and plants thrive in your climate. Goes to show that just trying something out, even if it's not in the environment that it usually exists, can yield some surprising and amazing results! Thanks for sharing 😁
Wow - so incredible !
Awesome! Love your garden! 🥰
Great to see you! I love your garden
Thank you! 😊
I am impressed, in only 8 months getting fruit from large trees right after transplanting!
Most of my tropical fruit trees in Modesto take a year to recover from transplanting, then another year or two of growth ( freeze free) for them to flower and fruit.
Thank you Jeff! Your channel was one of my first introductions to the idea that growing tropicals here in the Central Valley of California is possible! And your videos continue to inspire me! Thank you for taking the time to create and share them with all of us!
I was pleasantly surprised and feel very fortunate to be experiencing this level of success with these young trees. I think some of the big factors contributing to their health and vigor are: building a healthy mound of well draining soil in the entire area, the 40% shade canopy I used, planting in spring, and having a relatively warm winter this year. I’m hopeful that they will continue to thrive now that they are becoming established.
Thanks again Jeff!
Thanks for the kind words…Glad to hear I was an inspiration , in at least a small part. Your garden is beautiful, keep us updated as we head into the heat of summer.
Im having amazing results with Dr. Earth organic fertilizers.
I love your garden. Thanks for all the knowledge you are giving. The guava info is great. I just bought a few a couple of days ago. Now I know what to expect the flavours to be. Amazing walk throughs. Cheers😀
Great job Kyle! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Absolutely amazing!
Thank you
Thanks for sharing your garden. All the plants look so healthy and beautiful. Your garden reminds me of my grand father's garden back in VN. It had most of the fruits that you showed in the video.
So beautiful!!! 😍
Thank you!! 😊
Oh yes! Haven't watched yet, just excited to see a new vid😂😁
Thank You! It is a long video, but packed full of some really cool plants I'm growing
OK, so I watched it all, and its all growing fabulously! I love the Ruby guava, and its so easy to grow from seed that I now have 24 plants🤗 Do you have Persimmon? I'm praying my giant Fuyu produces fruit this year. Thanks for another awesome video.
All your planning, gathering of plants and hard wor have spectacularly paid off. Beautiful!
Thank you! Yes, I’m very pleased so far with these results, and as you noted - a big part of that is definitely planning and prep
Super. Love your garden so much.❤
Thank you
A fruit paradise 👍
Amazing. ❤ Thank you for sharing this Eden.
Glad you enjoyed it!
First time I ate Icecream bean fruit back in summer last year in Big Island Hawaii. My whole family were so excited to eat them and we never get disappointed. It added on my favorite fruit. Nice forest in your backyard. Good job
Great job!!! I love your garden and videos. Thank you for taking the time to do them.

Inspiringly amazing
Thanks Kyle I’m also living in Northern California indeed it’s a tropical states so eventually all these tropicals fruits should be tolerated and grow well off within all these climates. Thank you for introducing your tropical fruits trees in N-C ! 😁🙌🥰
Wow amazing looking garden 😍
I'm totally inspired. I'm going my garden soon and you gave me the perfect example
Thank you! Best of luck with your project!

Wow awesome work. Thanks for sharing
This gives me hope. I'm down in Merced County, which means I can definitely try to grow a lot more fruit trees
Just amazing! I live in Hawaii and am very familiar with a lot of these fruits and you have done a fantastic job cultivating this fruit jungle!
Really beautiful, I love your tropical garden.
Thank you!
Wow Kyle you have been at WORK. Been dying for a new video so glad to see it! Thanks for sharing, can't wait for the "making of" 👍🏿
Thank you! Yes, lots going on here and many more videos to come
Thanks for this amazing tour! I’m in Sac as well and learning about permaculture and dreaming/planning a food forest. Seeing one like this gives me so much inspiration!
Glad it was helpful!
This is awesome! I live north of Sacramento and this is my goal for this year to start a subtropical food forest.
Sending love from Jamaica. My dream is to have a sustainable homestead as well which I'm working towards, therefore I love your videos a lot. It appears that you're very passionate about what you do which is quite inspiring. All the best!
Wow! Impressive!
Thank you
Wow you have accomplished what I am dreaming to create in my backyard. I remember when I came across your amazing lawn to vegetable garden transformation and saved the video to work on mine using your great work as reference. Thank you so much for sharing your amazing fruit forest and knowledge. I hope this year to be able to acquire some fruit trees and plants and start my own fruit forest. Blessings your way.
Thank you! This project has been so interesting and fun!
Amazing! I am in 9b/10a and my mango froze but but is coming back. I lost one guava in a pot. I planted 20 trees mostly regular fruit that doesn’t require a lot of cold hours. Your fruit forest is truly amazing. I have 40% shade cloth on most of my garden. My banana made it but barely. It is recovering. I protected it too. Avocados did great as did my black olive and of course mulberry. This is only their second season.🎉
Definitely beautiful trees
Thank you
I definitely started watching for education , but it was also entertaining and May me want to keep watching!! I love to follow and learn with you and your family. Thank you🤗
Awesome! Thank you!
If I’m not mistaken I remember you showing this area very young on instagram and I’m incredibly surprised by how quickly and how well it turned out! I didn’t expect to see it like this until the next couple years! You never fail to prove how great of a gardener you are, and I’m glad I get to learn from you
That’s very kind of you! Yes, it’s growing in surprisingly fast!
Amazing! Interesting and informative. Thank you!
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the update! I love my Panache fig you recommended!! And unknowingly I planted a Manila mango also! Thanks for the frost info!!
That’s awesome! Thank you
