    I deleted my Instagram a few months ago because the photography felt fake to me, similar to what you were talking about. You are absolutely right about everyone forgetting the trends and "famous" insta photographers when it dies because I already don't remember a single one. Recently I started printing out my photos and putting them into an album. It feels so much more rewarding because I'm no longer concerned about likes or acceptance. I'm finally finding purpose and happiness through my work :)

    You’re making an impact. Gordon Parks and Jamal Shabazz were the photographers that I was fortunate enough to know about at a young age. Gordon Parks was a super successful creator in many avenues and still made work that he was passionate about. You obviously are doing the same. Thank you for being one of the voices that has made this year bearable

    I love this podcast. it's a shame that outside of NY, LA & Chi shorties consistently do not know about Gordan Parks. I'll be 50 next month & I knew about Gordan Parks in grade school. PS 136. the older I got I found out for some strange reason that outside of those cities & D.C. Black children don't hear about Gordon Parks, August Martin, Kwame Ture, Marsha P. Johnson & others until they hit like 25-35. none of that is by accident. I'm glad you're doin' what you're doin'.

    Hey Vuh, I'm a new listener but really enjoying hearing your perspective on things.
    I listened to this particular podcast about a week ago and ever since I've been thinking about what you and Amal were saying about Unoffensive work, and how it's popular because it's hard to dislike, it's unoffensive ... but also maybe isn't really making anybody think about anything. It's just something I've been thinking about and I really got a lot from that part of your conversation. Also genuine LOL at "damn bro, I live next to houses, there's a shit ton of houses where I live, I can go out and take some pictures of some houses" but yeah, so right, that isn't going to offend anyone, or make anyone think too much. Cheers man, appreciate the food for thought about creating work that's meaningful and makes people think about something real. Happy Holidays to you, stay safe out there, and all the best.

Like when we view pics from 1900-1920 its like a different world so us documenting everyday life and REAL stuff is really going to be amazing later on

    Photography stirs an existential dilemma in me.
    I collect and organize images that inspire me, from practical tips to FOMO. Then aim to put my life on a tradjectory towards moments like them. Yet, I always end up focusing on recreating those images instead of living the moments they capture. It's a curse.
    Ultimately, I return to photos for inspiration, and the cycle continues

I can honestly say I have learnt things, and developed my intellectual interests, so much in those 3 years. like, despite not pursuing my film career in that time, I never saw that as a set back. Like, you're still young as fuck when you leave uni. If you know it's going to enrich your life, then do it. if not and your going for the fucks, then your time and energy is better spent outside of it.

    I fucking love that you're trying to move in that direction, especially since that's what I wanted to do with my photography as well. Nothing wrong with photographing white women or taking photos of models, but I want to show latino's with their families, making dinner, capturing those still life moments instead of the stereotypical photos white photographers take of us. It's just been a struggle pitching that idea to people who think it's weird. Hahah.

    I don't usually share many comments, but this is something I've been struggling with. Recently with the start of quarantine, I have done a lot of introspection, and realized some of the downfalls of my social media use. I began to ask myself, how many posts or stories do I look at on a daily basis, and how many of them do I actually give a fuck about? Likewise, does anyone really give a fuck about me or what I share? I think many times, to a lot of people, the act of sharing something and getting likes can be self-pacifying. I myself didn't want to fall further into that trap so I deleted all my social media apps. With that being said, as a someone who is starting their freshman year online, I've been fighting the urge to start sharing again, simply as a means of connecting with people, and making sure people from my university know I exist lol. It's this weird back and forth I've been having, and interested to hear some of your guys opinions.

    • @gabriellepanlilio8393
      @gabriellepanlilio8393 3 года назад

      Yeah I got the same thought as well. You have this urge that you want to re- install social media apps and want to connect with people that you know and know you and this feeling that you might miss out on something in life where in fact people lived without any of these things we have right now. And also the feeling that you think you’re gonna isolate yourself just because you don’t have a social media is making you want to have one AGAIN.

  • @photographermugen
    @photographermugen Год назад

    (Times like these I wonder what's the word cap of a YT comment)
    29:03 the "dislike" button doesn't equal "hate", your video could of just been boring. As a creator, it's hard to know exactly why someone might like or dislike a video, unless you were to ask them specifically what about it did you like or didn't like. Even then who(& how many) among the thousands of viewers are/would take the time to comment said reason to great detail. As creator's, we make the assumption that if there are a lot of views on a video than that means people like the content. While in reality, this may not the case. I believe a person has to watch at least %20 of a video in order for YT to count the view, at least when last I checked. So the question is; how do we/I/the viewer inform the creator that we/i/the viewer find the video non-interesting? The Anserwer: "thumbs down button". This way is great because it allows the viewer to give feedback quickly and anonymously. Most people would hate to consistently post comments like "boring", " do more of this", "do less of that", and so on in the comment section out of fear of being harassed by the community (or dick riders, imo ). You see this a lot in the chat rooms of Live Streamers. Where one comment that doesn't lean towards the "slobbing their knob" direction, leads to the retaliation by the "ultra-fan boys". At least this is how I use it.

    College is not bad, paid or free. It is time consuming. If we’re talking photography as a major, don’t do it!!!! You can fill up your Electives with art classes and satisfy your passion, but don’t major in it. ALL the successful Photographers I personally know have degrees in other fields. That’s just to say that it’s not necessary.

    Honest question: how is racism supposed to die off or circumstances improve if people are constantly mentioning their skin color? I get this idea of black empowerment, but the way you speak (and the frequency of mentioning color) has this strong undertone of "its us versus them", with "them" being white people and other races. It *feels* angry.
    So straight up question, would you say you have an element of racism to your perspective? Even if its a defensive one?
