00:00 Introduction
When selected and paired strategically, clothes are more than simply stylish; they can make a man look even better than he naturally does, playing up his best features. But what are some of the best techniques to illustrate this principle?
Clothes are the best option we have to elevate our looks, whether for a romantic partner or for corporate success. Every article of clothing and many accessories can impact how your physical features are perceived. While it’s certainly important to be happy with the way you look, you can use classic men’s style to enhance your physical appearance.
11 Style Choices That Can Enhance Your Physical Appearance
01:55 1. Using Brimmed Hats to Complement Your Head/Face Shape
03:34 2. Choosing Glasses to Suit Your Face and Head Shape
04:51 3. Leveraging The Best Shirt Collars for Your Face Shape
06:18 4. Selecting The Right Shirt Colors for Your Skin Tone
08:10 5. Choosing The features of a suit Jacket that will enhance Your Anatomy
10:24 6. Incorporate Jackets with Patterns to Slim You Down or Bulk You Up
11:10 7. Understanding Lapels Affect Chest (and Shoulder) Width
13:06 8. Suit Jacket Features Will Affect How Tall You Look
15:33 9. Using Trouser Rise and Cuffs Impact the Impression of Height
16:52 10. Pleated Pants will Affect Leg Width and Body Mass
19:06 11. Choosing a Shoe Toe Shape to Complement Your Foot Size
20:25 Conclusion: Be Mindful of Proportions to Play up Your Features
Humans have had a sense of the ideal proportions of the body since from Ancient Greek sculpture to da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man. Classic menswear worn today remains intimately tied to these ideals. We often hear the advice that the best way to look good in tailored clothes is simply to exercise, get fit, and follow the advice of your doctor. While this is important not only for style but for health, even without doing so, you can make certain style choices to accentuate your best physical qualities and disguise flaws.
There are an infinite variety of body types out there, from tall and thin (Jeff Goldblum), to tall and broad (Dwayne Johnson), tall with weight in the torso (Stephen Fry), short and thin (Daniel Radcliffe), short and stocky (Joe Pesci), and many others. Each can be addressed by making the right combination of stylistic choices that will bring every man closer to the ideal physique.

Preston is the king of this channel, he wasn’t a natural in front of the camera but now he owns every video he’s a part of.
I thought the same thing!
@R Treadwell Then stop watching.
He’s my favorite presenter on the channel
This channel has been posting video after video of absolute sublime interesting and entertaining content, you really make my Friday even better!
That's right, the videos are extremely good!
Look at Preston and Raphael absolutely killing it in those bowlers! Keep on being cool, gentlemen!
I have a pair of Morning trousers from 1938 that are maybe the most comfortable trousers I own; I would love to see more full cut, high waisted trousers like that now.
Have yours made in that way! I’ve around 15 pairs of trousers made in the 30s cut.
A good tailor or seamstress should be able to make a pattern off the garment you love...and then you can make them multiple times! It's worth the investment!
i'm a crazy 6'4" 250lb tattooed biker looking guitar player and i love this channel! you guys have taught me so many things about men's clothing, style, etc. - been watching a few years now and i think i'm up to 26 sport coats! my Allen Edmonds game is rockin'! it would be awesome to sit and have a drink with all of you!
The collar shape part is quite interesting. So much here to learn.
Kudos to these gentlemen for bringing both informative and entertaining content to men of all ages. Appreciate the time and extensive research it takes to put these videos together.
Thank you
Every time I hear them talk about square toed shoes, I hang my head in shame. It was the 90’s. I was young and didnt know better.
Every man has his past, these guys also do, no need to feel ashamed :)
In my 70 years, I can proudly say, that I have NEVER, EVER, owned a pair of square toed shoes!
And, I have at least 100 pairs of dress, and casual shoes, at this time.
Never would these guys be caught in a hoodie
probably a medieval Cape. SURE
@Selim Mašić Very true. Some of the current looks that borrow from classic style are real nice. I shop from Uniqlo. They go in that direction too.
Looking forward to the Fort Belvedere x BAPE collab.
That's a very rude word round here Derek . . .
@Selim Mašić Uniqlo has that look
How many HOURS of your videos have I watched so far? Not enough, evidently! Good information, excellently presented.
Prestons jawline is so sharp I almost cut myself while watching, good lookin guy!
Iguanidae vibes.
Wonderful video! The detail about the direction of pleating on trousers was a lovely tip.
This robot is so advanced! Just messing around Preston, you are awesome!
It’s tough to be body positive and have a channel devoted to classic fashion, but you’ve managed to do it. Bravo.
Listen up, this one can be viewed multiple times. I'm a fan for three years. This one is in the top ranks. Great content!
What a video! I like this sense of humor from you guys. Great tips, greetings from Germany.
Great tips! Wonderful video production and photography 👏🏻
2:37 wow, I like the brim of your hat, Preston! It's interesting and colourful in a way of good taste
This is great advice! Fashion sense in a nutshell or for busy men in a busy world.
Late to the party... Best episode on the subject matter - way to go GG. Thank you for packing a wealth of information into a small package.
p.s. Thanks for the ever-present wit & humor, Preston.
Good, classic tips. Thanks!
I'm not certain if any of you have experience with self-defense preparedness or weapon carrying, but would you be willing to do a video on how to conceal carry self-defense tools and the like (firearms, knives, first aid kits, etc) while remaining stylish and physically capable? I often find concealed carriers resort to especially pedestrian clothing in order to have a good range of motion and sheer pocket space. While on the other hand, gentlemanly dressing standards feature few useful pockets, print objects easily, and hinder physical movements. I'd like to be able to dress stylishly while still being able to protect myself. Could I get some help feathering this line?
Typically you can get a good sport coat with a small 9mm or revolver in the inside pocket. Belts are a different story. You can also pocket carry decently with some pleated pants depending on your shape. Also the high waisted hip carry under the shirt and blazer or jacket is an option. There is inevitably going to be a trade off between how close the pants or shirt hug you and then print as well. Best bet is to get a custom tailored suit that fits you on the loose side of perfect then learn to sew or get yourself a lady who already does
edit: I’ve found that off the rack stuff shape usually sucks period so for the effort, get it tailor made
First, i really like your videos. You taught me a lot about dressing well and taking care about appearance.
Second, i wanted to ask of you could make video about beeing classy and stylish yet comfortable at home.
I think that would be an interesting for a lot of people since we live in the age of the home office.
"Greetings gentlemen, you should make a video talking about walking canes, it´s an interesting and atypical topic, I am personally interested in it and I would appreciate it since I am bearer of that style based on the Victorian gentleman. Finally, it was a good and interesting video*
Greetings, AM
I would like that topic
I concur with this fine chap. let us have a moving picture show on this subject, a talkie that only this crew of regal dandies could provide. I say good show. Ta-ta for now gentlemen.
@@henryw.elliott499 if cane's use for beating. Then why we use the word candy cane?
@@notfunnnydude Walking sticks were just for show , cane is used by a person that needs help to walk,
@@D.N.. thank you
Great informative video. 👍👍👍
Awesome content, thanks 🤗
Great insights, thank you ❤️😌
Good as always!
Raphael has the moves
Great video Preston
Sven's Grey Window check suit, makes him look exactly like those mid-century fashion plates. Nirvana is achieved.
Preston!!!!!!! The freaking man.
As I have long legs and a long torso, I enjoy three button or three-roll-two jackets, as the lapels hang higher; this higher lapel hangs to my chest well and balances my long torso along with high rise trousers balancing my leg line.
I enjoy your content Mr. Slaughter.
1:19 out here looking like Cecil the turtle
Where do you guys get those amazing classic images? Do you have a place where I can view them all? Like in full frame, it's nice to see the examples but the panning shots make it harder to admire the overall picture.
I need to see him sing now that they showed him doin it!
Definitely the Michael Corleone vibe at 11:10.
Enjoy.thank you.rwh
Can you make a video about differences and interesting facts about menswear terminology in different languages, countries or maybe in different periods in the same country or language?
For example: In American English it’s called a tuxedo, in British English its name is dinner suit, whereas In Russian, Ukrainian and some other European countries it’s called a Smoking (смокинг). Not to be confused with a smoking jacket, though.
What do you think?
I wish you guys could personally style me. I am having trouble figuring out what type of dress wear will look best on me, there is so much to it. Maybe make a patreon teir where we send in a couple photos and you each suggest a nice outfit for us?
Solid navy suit with a white shirt, deep red tie with either blue stripes or polka dots, and a plain white pocket square. Fedora is optional of course. With that, comes your gateway to classic menswear.
Nice James Coffee Company baseball hat! Haha
🔥🔥🔥
Hello Preston, do you have any tips for a jazz singer in regards to body language? I feel like I'm too rigid when performing.
@Selim Mašić thank you for visiting my chanel! I really hope so because I do all of the recording myself and maybe there's some added stress to that.
I have a question, what do I do if I need to clean my nose? during the Winter my nose does get a little wet so its a problem I should try fix, any tips?
I like the chapter titles so I can jump ahead! IMO, too many of your videos are too long. With the aforementioned chapter breaks I can jump ahead and get what I want faster. Thank you!
I like the chapter breaks too! But I disagree that their videos are too long.
Part of me is riveted because I want to learn how to wear suits well, and another part is vindicated that good men's classic fashion is just as nuanced and complicated as good women's fashion. Colour theory I learned from doing makeup so time to put those skills to other uses!
Regarding lapels, perhaps if the line of the outer edge of the lapel more-or-less replicates the line from shoulder point to belly button, this might make the shoulders look wider and the waist more narrow. I think this was the idea in the Edwardian era for women when jackets and waistcoats were the style, and even the darts in the bodice were placed more slanted from the bust to the center point of the waist
Preston, ignoring the facial hair for a sec, you look so much better with the haircut at 1:10. More modern, balanced and relaxed, less MadMen cosplay!
0:35 This is me when a Gentleman's Gazette's new video comes out...
0:54 "Preston the transhumanist furry"
Preston could make a pencil moustache work for him
Preston called Raphael's flat top pants confining lol
Hi thereeee!
As I have said with so many of this channels videos all of this advice only works if you are good looking, tall and confident.
I generally just stick with the bag over the head method.
It will help me in my vloggs too ❤💓💘
Wearing a size 45 (EU) shoe I always felt clownish wearing modern slimfit suits pants when it was a nesecity like for the prom uniform...
@gentlemangazette can pls do one on lucifer netflix show reaction?
Love you.
Yours truly,
Fan from India
I need more footage of bearded Preston
A beard would look good on him ,it would lessen the sharp jaw
I was almost certain “hat” would be number one.
I kinda like preston with facial hair
Preston looks like he's taken from a French cartoon; an artist, a band leader, or an art director. It's very rare in marketing, that a brand takes the risks no one else does, in order to connect in an honest way to their audience.
Outward facing pleats won’t open when tailored appropriately... as long as you go (real) bespoke!
The width of pant legs should balance with how your jacket fits. I've see pics of guys with a boxy jacket yet skinny dress pants and it looks way off; a box on two sticks. I think this happens because skinny pants are in fashion but they fail to think of how they work with a suit jacket or odd jacket.
Enjoy that stick-like physique while you got it, buddy. I had the same physique, and up through my early 30s I could basically eat whatever I wanted and didn’t even need to exercise much and I was always rail thin, but that is definitely no longer the case at 44 haha
The devil is in the detail. And so many details there are.
Next time i take a guy out on a date im making him take his hat off so I can see what he naturally looks like!
He should be taking it off when indoors anyways ;)
@@offtherecord681 next time i take a guy out on a date i’m gonna take him somewhere indoors!
Basil Rathbone, is that you?
What if you did the exact opposite of counterbalancing though? How would THAT look? Pretty cartoonish, I bet, but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing
I would look like mickey mouse then lol
Preston wants to be a flamingo confirmed
I like fedoras but it only makes by big nose look huger!
Clark Kent must be taking notes on this video so he can look less like Superman.
What of I have a small head? When I wear a suit I look like a Gumba from the Super Mario movie.
Tip #2 "Glasses or monocles"
Preston with a mustache looks like Jeffrey Dahmer lol
Serious question: where do I go to find men who are sharply dressed like this? Men in Vancouver don’t dress like this at all.
Perhaps I was born in the wrong era
There’s a lot of people like this in Melbourne, Australia. Very far away from Vancouver lol
@@slavicblin8155 steady on! Melbournens know how to dress. People in Adelaide don’t even dress this badly. They all look ridiculous
These men would have fit right in 1930s to 1970s
At the heart of it, clothes don't serve to make us look good, it serves as a way to protect ourselves by keeping us warm and by shielding our soft skin. :)
And if your hair is spare the proper lid helps prevent skin cancers later in life.
Trust me on this.
I feel like Preston looks uncomfortable when his mouth is so tightly pursed whenever he is demo-ing clothes. Would rather he just be natural
Especially when he models hats,I get the impression he really doesn't like wearing a hat
Is Preston alright? His voice sounds a little ill
Speak for yourself. I had irridescent scales implanted.
I would urge caution with using clips from movies... wouldn’t like to see someone come after you guys. :(
Until genetic alteration, which requires intelligent lead design.
Let's alter the opening line slightly and go with "Enhance a man's/person's looks" rather than "...better than he ACTUALLY looks."
We all know there is no ACTUAL when it comes to beauty.
You are very slim bro......
This guy is scary.....
From someone who works at corporate, instead of looking good, sometimes you guys look outdated and out of style/shape
I think the worst is their clothing choice too much colorful colors i really dont like that, even tho this channel brings a lot of great tips in classic menswear
@Selim Mašić well pointed i am not such a expert in menswear but i makes a lot of sense
@@lemonysnicket3153 they sell men's clothing so they are trying to encourage people to try more colors in shirts
"...lush fur"...speak for yourself.
I don't like this guy's face
